00:00Myopia
00:03Unlike astigmatism and hypermetropia, which are congenital defects, myopia appears during adolescence.
00:11From here the need to correct this defect of sight from afar, with a pair of glasses, or in rare cases,
00:17with contact lenses, to avoid consequences for adults.
00:20Very important, however, is also to undergo an eye doctor's visit, respecting a precise calendar.
00:26To underline this is Matteo Piovella, president of SOI, the Italian Ophthalmological Society,
00:32on the occasion of the ECM-FAD course on myopia, the myopic eye pathology from childhood to adulthood,
00:39made with the contribution of the scientific partner Italian Ophthalmological Society, in collaboration with Philman.
00:48The Italian Ophthalmological Society recommends a visit at birth and a visit between the ages of three,
00:54and a visit on the first day of school, an ophthalmologist's visit, of course,
00:58and in this way any type of problem is avoided.
01:03Is it possible to surgically correct myopia?
01:07We have the laser technique, which is the one with the laser at the cimeri, with the laser at femtoseconds,
01:16a mix of the two, the LASIK, the PRK and the SMI technique.
01:22They are all evolutions that allow, once identified and fundamental,
01:29with great precision, the entity of the visual defect of myopia, which must be still,
01:36it cannot continue to move, it is corrected at this point with a precision of one thousandth of a millimeter.
01:46By applying these techniques, a complete correction of the visual defect is obtained.
01:54For the expert, however, despite the evolution of surgical techniques, glasses are still fundamental.
02:04Until myopia stabilizes, they are practically the most necessary thing,
02:13because the first correction of myopia is always a pair of glasses.
02:18Then, I repeat, surgery can possibly come later,
02:25but I would also like to remember that absolutely not all myopia have the will
02:32or the request to undergo surgery to eliminate myopia.
