00:00More Filipinos are expected to benefit from cheap rice after the National Food Authority approved the sale of old supply of NFA rice to Makadiwa Center for the Vulnerable Sectors.
00:15This is what Clayzel Parr-Divian wrote.
00:19Arlene, a single mother, is working hard to earn her living as a housekeeper.
00:25It's hard, but you have to make an effort, especially when the price of rice is high.
00:30Even if it's just soy sauce, oil, it's okay.
00:33Rice is not just for one person, it's for a whole family.
00:40It's not just for food.
00:41Even just water and salt.
00:43In the price monitoring of the Department of Agriculture,
00:46each kilo of imported and local rice is around P45 to P65.
00:52Sharlina is saving everything.
00:54I used to be able to buy 10 kilos.
00:57Now, I can only buy 5 kilos.
01:00To help the most vulnerable Filipinos to buy cheap rice,
01:05the National Food Authority Council approved the sale of old supply of NFA rice to Makadiwa Centers.
01:14It will be sold for P29 per kilo for single parents.
01:20It will be sold to the elderly, the elderly, and the indigenous people or vulnerable sectors
01:26with a population of 6.9 million families.
01:29Our program, Bigas 29, is to provide access,
01:35especially to our poor Filipinos, to cheap rice.
01:40We are releasing the aging stocks so that it won't get worse.
01:44All the aging stocks will be certified as good quality.
01:52It is possible to buy 10 kilos of rice per family every month.
01:56That's why it is expected that 69,000 metric tons will be needed for supply every month.
02:03It will be obtained from the buffer stock of NFA.
02:06But the government's relief operation supply is also low.
02:10In times of emergency or calamity, the Bigas 29 program is starting.
02:16But the broad sale will be delayed in July.
02:19The BA's plan is to raise more than P363,000 metric tons of imported rice.
02:27To augment for this program, if the stock of NFA is not enough.
02:34In addition, the BA will recommend to reduce the imported rice supply.
02:41From 35%, 15% of the imported rice will last until 2028.
02:50If the 30-15 is too long, it will affect the farmers.
02:556 months to 1 year, or 1 year with a review every 4 months.
03:02That was the recommendation from the industry.
03:05That is the suggestion of the industry.
03:07This move is welcome for some groups of farmers.
03:10But they will still insist on increasing the tariff.
03:14If the main harvest will enter until the last quarter of this year,
03:19imports will be cheaper, presumably.
03:24Because of the world prices probably declining and the lower tariff.
03:29We're very concerned that the price of rice will really decrease.
03:33Many farmers are coming to us.
03:36Some are hesitating to plant rice.
03:40Because they might be lucky when the time comes.
