00:00Plus, special little sign just for you.
00:03Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the best easter eggs,
00:07callbacks and hidden jokes in the first three episodes of The Boys Season 4.
00:12If you aren't caught up on the show up to this point, beware of massive spoilers ahead.
00:17We could just be Kevin and Ambrosius.
00:22Number 10, a new video game hero.
00:24We need to talk.
00:26We're talking now.
00:26Then I'll have a proper catch-up in real life over at my place, maybe.
00:30Come on, don't make me play the six months to live card.
00:33Before Ryan started playing the Mortal Kombat-esque tournament of heroes with Butcher,
00:38we were treated to a roster full of familiar suits.
00:40The stretchy Ezekiel, the tiny Termite and the not-quite-invisible Translucent
00:45were just a few of the funniest fighters.
00:47Translucent doesn't even mean invisible.
00:51That means semi-transparent.
00:53But the one masked face that looked unfamiliar
00:55sported a yellow and black suit with talons on the mask.
00:58Based on the costume's spider design,
01:00the character is the show's version of the comic hero Web Weaver.
01:04The suit's presence was also foreshadowed in Episode 1
01:07when a news report hinted that they had just been released from rehab.
01:10Web Weaver's appearance would mark the second time
01:13an Amazon Prime show featured a Spider-Man-inspired hero.
01:16Let's get this guy webbed up.
01:18What?
01:18No, are you trying to hurt this old man?
01:21Number 9.
01:21The Marvelous Miss...Rachel?
01:28While we're on the subject of Amazon shows,
01:31we couldn't ignore the scene where the boys stopped to make fun
01:33of one of the streamer's most popular programs.
01:36After a surveillance plan goes south,
01:38the boys end up running away from villains and into a bat mitzvah.
01:41The proof is right here.
01:45Now I'm calling on all the...
01:46Whoa!
01:50The font on the decorations for Miss Rachel
01:53is the exact same titling used for Amazon's Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
01:57To further hammer home the point,
01:59cardboard cutouts of a few of the show's most prominent actors appear in the scene.
02:03We'll try not to think about the fact that Mrs. Maisel's existence in this universe
02:07would mean that Ashley took a break from Vought to act on the show.
02:14Number 8.
02:15Justice for Susan Rainer.
02:17A quick shot on a plaque in season 4's second episode
02:20reminded us that we lost one of the show's best characters a couple of seasons back.
02:24The deputy director of the CIA was fully ready to give her allies crucial information.
02:29Meaning?
02:31Meaning...
02:32I've been trying to put this puzzle together and there's a missing piece
02:35and it's been driving me nuts and I think you just handed it to me.
02:38But Susan's life ended right after she got a nosebleed
02:41that signaled her head was about to be popped.
02:44During that episode,
02:45the writers sneakily showed us who did it before we knew it was Victoria Newman
02:50with an extremely clever cut.
02:51Her head's gonna explode?
02:53Chrissy, who do you know who could do that?
02:55No one.
02:55Her head's gonna explode!
02:57Look, I have a daughter.
03:00I'm worried about super terrorists too.
03:03The team never managed to get justice for the CIA operative's sudden death.
03:07However, since Mallory and Dakota Bob are pushing the boys to eliminate Newman by any means necessary,
03:13Rayner may be avenged.
03:15Now I can only keep my distance from her for so long.
03:18Eliminating her is top priority.
03:20So do your f*****g job!
03:22Number seven.
03:23Supernaturally good actors.
03:25You're good, you're perfect.
03:32Best get a move on the Flat Earthers, get the space at 430.
03:34The duplicating soup that had trouble getting out of Firecracker's friend zone
03:38was played by Rob Benedict.
03:40Before being cast as Splinter on this Eric Kripke show,
03:43the performer appeared on another little-known Kripke show called Supernatural.
03:48Back on that fan-favorite program, Rob Benedict just so happened to play God.
03:52You saw the needling and stuff, it's always made me deeply, deeply uncomfortable.
03:56Just don't use the G word, okay?
03:58Just, just call me Chuck.
04:00His powerful role on that show made his lowly character on The Boys even more hilarious in hindsight.
04:06Outside of Benedict, Kripke was also able to bring on Supernatural alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
04:11Both actors arrived just a season after Jensen Ackles,
04:14a.k.a. Dean Winchester, started playing Soldier Boy.
04:18Kripke just needs to cast Supernatural's Jared Padalecki
04:21to satisfy nostalgic fans of the CW show.
04:23What were you last night?
04:27I had some things to take care of.
04:29Well, that's specific.
04:31Number six.
04:32Two comical changes.
04:37What are you doing in here?
04:38When Frenchie and Kimiko attempt to sneak acid into the vice-presidential hopeful's hotel room,
04:43they are confronted by Newman's super-powered daughter.
04:46Although the chemist escapes unharmed, his partner loses an arm.
04:49I reached through myself.
04:51Frenchie, trust me.
04:52This brutal scene is a twist on a huge moment from the comics.
04:56During a routine operation, Frenchie and Kimiko are ambushed by a team of violent supes.
05:01The battle ends up costing the chemist his arm.
05:03Unlike the show's Kimiko, the comic Frenchie's limb does not regenerate.
05:08In literally lighter news,
05:09the TV series is finally giving Starlight a power she had in the comics.
05:13Although she could always fly in the source material,
05:16the show has changed things so that she learns the ability late in her career.
05:20Good.
05:24Yes, Annie.
05:25That was awesome.
05:26Number five.
05:27Correct Soldier Boy conspiracies.
05:29Look, what's important is, what are you selling?
05:32I'm here to share the truth, and nothing but.
05:35Most of the conspiracy theories that appear at TruthCon are just there to fill in space on the set.
05:40But if you look closely, you'll spot a couple of conjectures that are actually accurate.
05:45One of the posters claims that Soldier Boy and Liberty used to hook up.
05:49We know this rumor is true because he admitted she
05:51helped him start the very adult herogasm event.
05:54It's my thing.
05:56I founded it in 52.
05:58Me and this other supe, Liberty.
06:00Man, was she a firecracker.
06:02Outside of that X-rated conjecture,
06:04another conspiracy theory claimed that Soldier Boy had been captured by the CIA.
06:08We knew this hypothesis is true because we saw Mallory putting him away in season three.
06:13Whatever theorist is getting intel on Soldier Boy might be a real government mole who would
06:18definitely get in trouble for leaking secrets.
06:20Look, we're gonna find out anyway.
06:23So you just tell us the truth.
06:25We swear you'll be fine.
06:27Number four.
06:28The writers roast Brett Favre.
06:30Fans are used to seeing celebrities roast each other or themselves on The Boys.
06:34They're brushing the wrinkles out of the Don of The Seven,
06:35put VFX nine mil over the budget.
06:38Written neck fold to neck fold with Sex and the City 2.
06:41But one of the most severe burns was entirely devised by the writers.
06:45During a news broadcast in the season five premiere,
06:47a headline claims that Brett Favre said, quote,
06:50childhood obesity justifies diverted food bank funds.
06:54This fake story references the real controversy where the former quarterback was accused of
06:58using funds intended for people on welfare for his own benefit.
07:01CBS News has exclusively obtained text messages and documents that connect the
07:07plan to divert millions of dollars in welfare funds to pet projects
07:11of Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre.
07:13The fact that this easy to miss joke appeared at all suggests
07:16the writer really wanted to roast Brett Favre.
07:19Judging by the scene,
07:20every celebrity should be prepared to get dinged whenever they watch The Boys.
07:24I'm not giving off too much of a blindside vibe, am I?
07:27As if that's a bad thing.
07:28Are you?
07:29Wait, what is that smell?
07:30Number three, video store callbacks.
07:33I'm surprised you called.
07:35I'm full of surprises, ain't I?
07:37What do you want?
07:38During Butcher's secret meeting with Victoria in Vought's version of Blockbuster,
07:42we got distracted by a few great Easter eggs.
07:45The poster for a movie called Static Heat 3
07:47is a callback to the polarity character introduced on Gen V.
07:50There's also a few Soldier Boy posters to remind us that he was once a big movie star.
07:55The prisoners you liberated here, most of them were nearly dead.
07:58They owe you their lives.
08:00I'm not here to take credit.
08:01These boys here, they're the real heroes.
08:03Ironically, one of the sneakiest Easter eggs appeared outside of the store.
08:07If you pause at the right moment,
08:09you'll see a ruined reading room that was sponsored by the Church of the Collective.
08:13That was notably the name of the organization The Deep got caught up in,
08:16before realizing it was a cult.
08:18His public feud with the church is likely why the store looked abandoned.
08:22Brandon me with your initials!
08:24It's enough!
08:25I'm afraid that you have become a toxic personality, Dip.
08:31Number 2.
08:32Jeffrey Dean Morgan's upgraded character.
08:35Listen, brother, you don't trust me?
08:37Go back to your team.
08:39Oh, wait.
08:41Anyone who read the comics might have been shocked to find out that a suave
08:44and intimidating actor was playing Joe Kessler.
08:47In the source material, a character named Howard Kessler was a complete joke.
08:51This pathetic CIA agent was nicknamed Monkey after being involved in an incident
08:55we cannot go into details about without getting demonetized.
08:58What we can tell you is that comic Kessler lacked the spine to stand up to Butcher.
09:03By contrast, Morgan's take on the character has no problem staring Carl Urban down.
09:08How long before you drop dead?
09:11Hi, CIA.
09:12I can find a medical file.
09:14The whole world is about to burn, Billy.
09:16We need the kid.
09:17Need the kid?
09:18This adaptation upgrade was the perfect way to add conflict to the show.
09:22As Butcher tries to do everything he can to save Ryan,
09:25he has to worry about Kessler trying to turn the kid into a weapon.
09:29Either we figure out how to train him, or we figure out how to kill him.

10:03Ashley's list of 25 potential heroes that could join The Seven was full of excellent references.
10:08Obscure comic supes like Malchemical got major shoutouts.
10:11Additionally, spinoff characters like Groundhog and Tech Knight were also mentioned.
10:16My journey to four blockbusters and six people's choice began in this very class.
10:23We even got deep cuts like Big Game, a supe that appeared in the series' very first episode.
10:28Out of all the heroes that appeared on the screen, Hyperion stood out thanks to comic history.
10:32When Ashley brings up that supe's profile,
10:35she notably insults her with some very not suitable for work language.
10:39She coincidentally happens to share a name with a Marvel hero
10:42that has been accused of being a Superman ripoff.
10:45It was a clever way for the writers to burn the comics company during the already funny scene.
10:56What was your favorite easter egg?
10:57And did you catch that Tilda Swinton was the voice of the Deep's very special octopus friend?
