Transcript
00:00The views of the judges are different regarding the issue of POGO.
00:04Earlier, a new petition was submitted to the House of Representatives to ban it in the Philippines.
00:11Mela Lasmoras was surprised.
00:16My call should not voluntarily stop the proliferation of POGO in the country.
00:25What POGO should do is to ban it. I'm calling on PAGCOR to ban this because this is not anymore helping our country.
00:36This is the call of the House Committee on Human Rights Chair Bienvenido Abante, Jr.
00:42amidst the various controversies that are now being raised by the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGO.
00:48Abante is adamant that the situation is getting worse and his operation should end in the country.
00:54He was the first one to raise the issue of POGO.
00:58Since the POGO started in the Philippines, my advocacy is to ban it all because number one, it will not be a problem.
01:11Number two, not only because I'm anti-gambling, but these are Chinese. I don't believe that these are just ordinary Chinese.
01:23The Black people, led by House Deputy Minority Leader Franz Castro,
01:28also submitted a separate petition to ban POGO in the country.
01:33We filed this petition because of the various problems we have with POGO,
01:40to the point that there are already people who are involved, quote-unquote, already involved by local officials.
01:48These raids have proven that there are a lot of Chinese people who are employed in POGO.
01:59Their documents are not enough to work here.
02:05But apart from other lawmakers, House Committee on Ways and Means Chair Joey Salceda
02:10also gave the benefits of legal POGOs in the country.
02:15He said that the operators who are involved in poaching should have already obtained a license,
02:19but not all of them, but the entire industry.
02:22According to the lawmakers, the current POGO system is better,
02:27which brings more jobs and benefits to the country.
02:31House Speaker Mark Indrum-Waldes was the first one to say that as long as there is poaching, they will not let it go unpunished.
02:38They don't know what to do, so it's up to them to monitor the situation in their districts.
02:45Should POGO be considered a national threat? Is POGO a national threat?
02:50As long as all stakeholders in all sectors obey the law, it's okay.
03:01But if it goes against the law, whoever it is, they will be punished.
03:07Next week, the camera will return for a session.
03:10We are looking forward to discussing this topic in the plenary.
03:15Mela Lesmoras for Pambansang TV in Bagong, Philippines.
