00:00 The NFL world is consistently reacting so we do here to Justin Jefferson's
00:08 record-setting deal yesterday. A four-year contract extension worth a
00:13 hundred and forty million dollars with the Minnesota Vikings that includes a
00:17 hundred and ten mil guaranteed. That's thirty five million dollars per year on
00:22 an annual average salary basis making Justin Jefferson the highest paid wide
00:28 receiver in the history of the National Football League but not just wide
00:32 receiver the highest paid non-quarterback ever in the history of
00:36 the National Football League as well. And Donny we brought this breaking news to
00:41 everybody yesterday when the contract extension came down and frankly we
00:46 expected J.J. to get his large payday at a certain point throughout this off
00:51 season more than likely during these summer months and here they are. And the
00:56 reaction that you have seen around the National Football League in the last 24
01:00 hours or so how do you feel about this contract extension for J.J.? I love it I
01:06 think it's fantastic you take care of maybe the best wide receiver in football
01:09 lock him up for years to come keep him happy heading into training camp and
01:12 also the price of the brick goes up every single day and how do you know
01:16 this is like a good contract and you know we always pull like different
01:19 contracts that we seem like I can't believe this guy got this much money.
01:22 Probably the most recent one I guess you could say where we all laughed that was
01:25 Daniel Jones and the New York Giants you know getting 40 million dollars roughly
01:29 per year when if he went on the free agent market I don't even know if he
01:31 would've got a contract offer from any other team. That was funny but you saw
01:35 these numbers for Justin Jefferson at a hundred ten million dollars guaranteed
01:38 and everybody goes yeah makes sense he's a really good player that's what he's
01:41 deservedly so. And also A.J. Brown behind him 84 million, St. Brown at 77 million.
01:46 I'm just bringing up two of those guys because of how much money more Justin
01:50 Jefferson got in guarantees than those other guys. Are we saying he's so much
01:54 better than A.J. Brown or Amin Rah, St. Brown? No we're not but even though he
01:57 got that much more nobody's having a tough time with it because if you are
02:01 considered the best player at your position and you break a record on
02:04 salary compensation that's what's supposed to happen here. So who knows who
02:08 the next wide receiver is going to be but that is a high bar that has been
02:12 sent now for a top light top flight wide receiver and everybody by rounding saying
02:16 and including myself that's a good deal. He's a good player you haven't locked up
02:20 for a long time he's young he should dominate let's get after it. Let's go to
02:25 that guaranteed money graphic again first and foremost to highlight the
02:28 excellent work of our graphics producer Jesse Metzger that is a beautiful image
02:33 on the screen and then secondly to highlight the first four guys including
02:37 Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Amin Rah, St. Brown and Jalen Waddell that have the
02:42 most guaranteed money at the wide receiver position in the National
02:45 Football League all four of those contract extensions happening this off
02:50 season. It is where the wide receiver market is trending now a hundred and
02:55 forty million in total is a vast amount of money. Thirty five million dollars per
03:00 year is a lot of money. If there was one guy not named a quarterback worth it in
03:06 my estimation it's Minnesota's Justin Jefferson. When you look at the career
03:11 stats for J.J. in his four years out of LSU it's been otherworldly. The
03:16 offensive player of the year two years ago in 2022 he started off the first
03:21 three weeks of this past season nearly having a hundred and fifty receiving
03:25 yards in three consecutive games. Donnie he only played ten games last year and
03:31 still had more than 1,000 receiving yards as well. Justin Jefferson has been
03:38 an absolute freak over his four-year NFL career he averages 98.3 receiving yards
03:44 per game that's the most per game from an average basis in the history of the
03:50 NFL as well. Justin Jefferson is deserving of it and you said DRS that's
03:55 what's supposed to happen when you are arguably if not even inarguably the best
04:00 at your position you should reset the market you should get that record
04:04 setting historic deal. I estimated that one of the wide receivers that was in
04:09 line for a contract extension this offseason Justin Jefferson, Jamar Chase
04:13 maybe even Dallas's CD Lamb would get close to 35 million dollars per year. Did
04:19 you think that was in the cards for a guy like Justin Jefferson as well? I
04:23 didn't know how high it was going to go because the one thing that I guess they
04:26 were good with and you saw the end of the season when the general manager here
04:30 for the Minnesota Vikings goes this is our best player on the team basically
04:34 this is the best wide receiver in the league he's young we are going to pay
04:37 him accordingly and I believe even offered the words of we're gonna make
04:39 him the most high the highest paid wide receiver in the sport here and there was
04:43 like yeah we expected that to take place but also we weren't hearing numbers
04:46 being floated out and we saw contracts coming in the Waddles the St. Browns and
04:50 AJ Brown that oh you know what that's gonna be a benchmark where you know this
04:54 guy is going to get over that but the fact of the matter is that AJ Brown got
04:58 84 million dollars he got a hundred and ten million dollars and also keep in
05:02 mind yeah he wasn't a free agent because how many times did these players get so
05:06 upset like man Ben if I just got on to the free agent market my number would be
05:10 25 million dollars higher and also he didn't get a hometown discount from the
05:14 team like I'm just happy here I want to stay here they actually did really right
05:18 by me goes if you hit the free agent market we don't even know if you would
05:21 get this much but we love you we're gonna pay you even more than what you
05:24 think you might have been worth on the open market at this point also keep in
05:27 mind you have to keep these wide receivers happy do they want big
05:30 paychecks absolutely but they also want the football so if that football isn't
05:34 coming their way at least you know you have that big paycheck because let's
05:37 keep in mind Kirk Cousins was an unbelievable guy for Justin Jefferson
05:41 who knew like you know what this guy actually got me paid over the past
05:44 couple years you have a rookie coming in who does have some talent but he's still
05:47 a rookie so if you're Justin Jefferson and you'll get your 130 catches for
05:51 1,800 yards in 22 touchdowns the Vikings said you know what we might have
05:55 expected some growing pains here that's why we paid you so much money we'll get
05:59 it back next year.
06:01 1,300 and a half that is the receiving yards number for
06:04 Justin Jefferson in 2024 it feels like a high bar but if he's healthy for 15, 16,
06:10 17 games even with the Rook at the quarterback position I think he goes
06:15 over. Many people smiling yesterday in Minneapolis no more than Justin
06:20 Jefferson but Kweisi Adolfo Menza the GM for the Vikes he's smiling Kevin
06:24 O'Connell large grin as is JJ McCarthy what more could you ask for as a rookie
06:30 signal caller than to arguably have the best wide receiver incredibly happy in
06:36 the National Football League back with your organization. Now we'll talk about
06:40 the Vikings more on the other side DRS but they do have a seven and a half win
06:45 total the odds not overly optimistic on Minnesota as a team to have success this
06:50 year they have the longest price at 9 to 1 to win the NFC North out of the four
06:55 teams in the division and plus 290 to make the postseason what's your outlook
06:59 for the Vikings this upcoming season? I think it's about right here because it's
07:04 not a downgrade on Minnesota it's actually an upgrade on what that
07:07 division is presenting now the Green Bay Packers are very good the Detroit
07:10 Lions are very good and we saw a we don't know if we saw a monumental leap
07:13 between talent on the Bears from one year to the next do we see in the past
07:17 15 years in the NFL tough sledding for the Vikings. A few more thoughts on the
07:22 outlook around the National Football League next. Justin Jefferson got his big
07:27 payday what does it mean for the Minnesota Vikings this upcoming season
07:30 DRS a couple of more thoughts on this because we were coming up on the
07:34 commercial break seven and a half is the win total for the Minnesota Vikings the
07:38 under has the hefty juice at minus 162 Minnesota is not overly thought of
07:45 entering 2024 to be a playoff contender in the NFC to win the North as they did
07:51 two NFL seasons ago or even really have a winning record despite bringing back
07:57 Justin Jefferson but I would still look at Minnesota favorably in terms of being
08:01 a competitive football team and I will continue to keep an eye on their overs
08:06 with Kirk Cousins an incredibly profitable team in terms of what they
08:10 were doing on the scoring side of the football Brian Flores there on the
08:15 defensive side of the football now and yes it is JJ McCarthy and yes I have
08:19 some questions about how his game and the actual productive numbers translates
08:24 to the National Football League but under Kevin O'Connell with Justin
08:28 Jefferson happy and back second year pro in Jordan Addison one of the better
08:32 tight ends in that conference in TJ Hawkinson you have to be optimistic
08:37 about this Vikings offense at the very least now you're right about that
08:42 because we do have higher expectations now rookie quarterbacks as opposed to
08:47 the past let's just say 10 to 15 years of coming into the league and I'll
08:49 continue to bring up what CJ Stroud did last year sending that into the
08:53 stratosphere going hey not only can you win football games you can win your
08:56 division you can make the playoffs you can win playoffs and also have your
08:59 rookie quarterback and NDP conversations right up to the final
09:02 couple weeks now that is lofty expectations for JJ McCarthy and you
09:05 also have Sam Darnold as a ready-made starting quarterback if they need if
09:10 McCarthy's not ready now anytime you're drafting a quarterback that high he
09:13 better be ready for game number one because that's the fans expectations but
09:16 also keep in mind Aaron Jones at running back who they brought over from Green Bay
09:20 that's a solid addition Justin Jefferson Jordan Addison who was a high draft pick
09:24 for them that's a formidable wide receiving core and you did bring up TJ
09:27 Hawkinson as well so it's not as if we're coming in with the starting lineup
09:30 like I have nothing to work with like we saw last year the number one overall
09:34 pick go to Carolina be like are you kidding me like Miles Sanders is my guy
09:37 down here which what we had to deal with you actually have a competent starting
09:41 lineup but sometimes it's not about your starting lineup and it's about the other
09:44 team starting lineup in that division that's going to be a tough division and
09:47 it's right flat seven and a half let's just say they get to eight wins for the
09:50 Minnesota Vikings that's a quality season with the rookie quarterback here
09:53 but it's just a shame that they're gonna play in the division with so much
09:56 expectations outside of Minnesota the division is on the upswing there is no
10:03 doubt the Chicago Bears have a win total of eight and a half but the over as the
10:06 Jews at minus 150 the Bears expected to have a winning record when two years ago
10:12 they won only three games the Lions now all of a sudden the year-over-year
10:17 expected divisional favorites and some promise with Jordan Love and the Green
10:21 Bay Packers rallying down the homestretch of last NFL season to earn a
10:26 playoff berth and of course an upset playoff victory on the road in Dallas
10:30 the NFC North one of the more intriguing divisions in football in my estimation
10:35 this upcoming season oh by the way JJ McCarthy's passing yards prop for his
10:40 rookie campaign 2850 and a hook I share the Justin Jefferson's was thirteen
10:45 hundred and a half that's nearly half of what JJ McCarthy is expected and of
10:50 course you don't need JJ McCarthy to throw all of that to Justin Jefferson
10:55 either via injury or maybe the rookie is not performing at his highest ability
10:59 they go somewhere else Sam Darnold also in that quarterback room in
11:03 Minneapolis but I do like the number on JJ McCarthy with all the talent around
11:09 him in Minneapolis given how relatively low that number is so Donnie as we look
11:15 at the wide receiver market Justin Jefferson has been paid Amin Ross St.
11:19 Brown also paid this offseason AJ Brown previously was the highest paid receiver
11:25 in the National Football League his contract extension this offseason to the
11:29 tune of 32 mil poor per year Jalen Waddell still in the top five in terms
11:34 of payments so what is next who do you think the next wide receiver to be paid
11:41 is going to be might it be CD lamb in Dallas might it be Jamar chase and or T
11:47 Higgins in Cincinnati it's CD lamb CD lamb is gonna you know see these numbers
11:53 and we're also getting reports out that it's now accelerated here in the room
11:56 meaning that Jerry Jones Stephen Jones and the agency that's representing CD
12:00 lamb say all right we have that number here now granted let's take it back to
12:04 when Patrick Mahomes got that 500 million dollar contract we never said
12:07 that was an overpayment even though it was way more money than any quarterback
12:10 was making because the value was you have the best player you best position
12:13 in sports and you're gonna have him for the next 10 years paying whatever he
12:16 wants any lamb is really good I don't know if he's going to eclipse Justin
12:21 Jefferson but he's going to be in that ballpark because he's a really really
12:24 good wide receiver and they need to pay him sooner than later and they will he's
12:28 next on my docket the Cincinnati Bengals you're gonna get some dust on those
12:33 trophies out there boys cuz I don't think they're getting paid for quite
12:35 some time
12:38 (upbeat music)
