00:00 - Go, one second.
00:01 A little bit high right here,
00:04 so right here's gonna be illegal.
00:06 Gentlemen, you were given your instructions
00:07 in the dressing room.
00:08 I want a good, clean, hard fight.
00:10 You will obey my commands at all times.
00:12 Touch 'em up, good luck to both of you.
00:14 - Jerry Cantu, the third man in the ring.
00:16 We get ready to go.
00:17 This one's scheduled for six rounds
00:20 between Eric Mondragon, eight, one, and one,
00:22 and Janelle Alonso, 11, two, and one.
00:25 And there you see Mondragon in the black and gold.
00:29 He's got the eight on the front of his trunk,
00:32 24 on the back.
00:34 Kobe Bryant, mamba mentality.
00:36 I'm like, "You're a big basketball fan?"
00:37 Like, "I'm a Kobe fan."
00:39 (Jerry laughs)
00:40 The Kobe attitude-- - There's a lot of those.
00:42 - Is what he likes.
00:44 So he's got that, you see that 24 on the back.
00:46 I just wanted to pay respect to him,
00:47 and that's why I'm having that out there.
00:49 Mondragon from nearby Maywood, California.
00:52 Trains at Maywood Boxing,
00:55 which it's one of those gyms in Southern California.
00:58 If you fight there, just know that
01:00 whoever you're going up against is tough as nails.
01:04 And that's exactly the kind of spot.
01:08 He's got Mario Morales at Yuca in his corner,
01:11 and then also Charles Huerta,
01:13 former pro fighter, is now working with his corner.
01:15 Mondragon from Maywood along the 710 freeway
01:20 in Southern California,
01:21 which has produced so many good fighters over the years.
01:26 He's been inactive because of a right hand injury.
01:31 Yes, he hasn't fought in a year and a half.
01:35 His last fight was his only defeat.
01:37 He suffered it at Madison Square Garden
01:40 in the theater there at Madison Square Garden
01:42 on one of the bigger cards there,
01:43 and lost to Haven Brady Jr., an undefeated fighter.
01:48 It was a good fight, he was in it,
01:51 but dropped the decision.
01:54 - Yeah, that was Lomachenko Jermaine Ortiz card.
01:58 It was a top rank card.
01:59 Also, first time you might have seen him,
02:01 Mondragon was during the bubble,
02:03 when top rank had their bubble in Las Vegas.
02:05 He fought there a couple of times,
02:07 but that injury that he suffered during that fight
02:11 put him out there,
02:11 so he had to do physical therapy on the right hand.
02:14 It was right above the knuckles, the metacarpals.
02:17 So those bones were affected.
02:19 And they told him, "Well, you don't need surgery,
02:23 "but you need a rest.
02:24 "Don't punch, it's bad for you."
02:26 - Well, tellin' a boxer, "Don't throw punches."
02:29 So that was a frustration part for him.
02:32 - Well, Lausa, his opponent here tonight,
02:36 has been active not only as a pro boxer,
02:38 but as an MMA fighter.
02:39 He even had four fights in the UFC.
02:41 - Yeah, Janel's interesting.
02:44 Most of his fights have been in the Philippines.
02:49 Left from Janel, body shot,
02:52 going back and forth, now starting to pick up the action.
02:55 - He started off very fast in his career,
02:59 but he suffered a couple of losses in his last two fights.
03:02 - Got knocked out in his last two fights.
03:06 One in Florida and the other one in Uzbekistan.
03:09 - I think that fight in Florida
03:11 was his first in the United States.
03:13 So he's a little more comfortable now.
03:15 - I'm sorry, he was in Kazakhstan, Triple G.
03:18 Where he got knocked out.
03:21 (crowd cheering)
03:23 - Lausa is much more aggressive than I'd seen in the tapes
03:32 that I've seen of his previous fights.
03:34 - Good action.
03:45 - Round one action.
03:47 Was dominated most of the round by Eric Mondragon,
03:52 or Mondragon, we're going with Mondragon, right?
03:55 Because that's what he liked.
03:56 - Yeah, we'll go with Eric.
03:57 - Eric, we'll go with Eric.
03:59 But Janel came on at the end of the round.
04:04 I thought that was a pretty good last minute.
04:06 - There you see Charles Huerta,
04:12 former pro fighter for Golden Boy.
04:15 On the side of Mondragon, along with Yuka.
04:17 There's Victor Dizon in the corner of Janel Lausa.
04:21 (whistle blows)
04:24 - Mondragon brings a crowd too.
04:37 About 15 minutes away from home.
04:39 - He's got a distinct stance, a little unusual.
04:42 That left hand held down low.
04:44 Very wide stance, as you see.
04:46 It's almost when he faces an opponent,
04:51 I don't really usually like this,
04:52 we'll see how he carries it off,
04:53 but he gets squared up almost to his opponent.
04:56 Wide stance and squared up.
04:59 His left shoulder is not out in front really,
05:03 the way you normally like to see it in a defensive stance.
05:06 (crowd chattering)
05:09 - So Mondragon, I'm looking now at that left,
05:23 I'm gonna bring it up.
05:24 He is more square.
05:27 - That gives your opponent a lot to shoot at.
05:32 - Yeah.
05:34 - And pretty much eliminates the opportunity
05:37 for you to roll that shoulder.
05:39 - Just looks like Mondragon looking for the home run shot.
05:43 And Lausa's right here, hit me.
05:48 - And he gave him the body and Eric took it.
05:51 - 35 year old Janel Lausa.
05:57 (crowd chattering)
06:00 - Eric won his first fight, took him 24 seconds.
06:08 Might've thought they were all gonna be that easy.
06:10 - Well it has been, now that he's 8-1-1.
06:14 You see that machine gun tattoo on his right temple,
06:23 it's a brand that he likes.
06:25 - Well you have a gun, he's like no, I just like the brand
06:27 and what it looks like.
06:29 All right young man.
06:30 When he spots you, he's like no I wish.
06:33 It's a clothing brand.
06:34 Good right hand from Mondragon.
06:37 Yeah Lausa is tough.
06:40 - Yeah, he kinda smiles or laughs when he gets hit.
06:43 - But a veteran at 35 fighting at 130,
06:48 maybe go to the body some.
06:50 'Cause he knows he's gonna be able to take a shot upstairs
06:54 if he did that, he rolled with it.
06:56 (crowd chattering)
06:59 - I asked him, I guess you ask all Philippine fighters now.
07:05 You know Manny Pacquiao.
07:06 - Yeah, you met Manny Pacquiao, you talked.
07:08 - Yeah, he's met him, he's talked with him.
07:10 - Yes, he does have big calves, that's Lausa.
07:16 (laughing)
07:18 - Lausa.
07:22 - I like he's having fun in there, little smirks.
07:25 When he's making Mondragon miss.
07:27 Done with two.
07:32 - A clash of heads at the very end.
07:36 (crowd chattering)
07:38 (upbeat music)
07:41 - There you see the big shot from Mondragon.
07:55 - It was from long range, that right hand, nice follow up.
07:58 Who's been looking for that.
08:01 As you see again, Lausa kind of smirking when he gets hit.
08:06 (crowd chattering)
08:08 Neither guy by the way, as you can see,
08:13 they're sitting down between rounds.
08:16 They're each standing up.
08:17 (whistle blowing)
08:24 (bell ringing)
08:33 (crowd chattering)
08:36 - Lausa coming out with some good body punching here
08:47 to start the round.
08:48 Third round of action scheduled for six.
08:55 Chino trying to get a jab working here.
09:01 Slow Mondragon down a little bit if he can.
09:03 - Eric's gone into kind of a defensive shell here
09:11 in this round. - Yeah.
09:12 - I don't know what that's about.
09:13 - You wouldn't you want him to be more aggressive?
09:15 - I would think so.
09:16 He's had pretty good success with it.
09:17 - And Lausa taking him up on the invitation
09:30 to be the more aggressive fighter here in the round.
09:32 - And if you're Lausa, okay,
09:44 you're gonna slow down the pace for me?
09:45 Appreciate it.
09:46 And there's the MMA background.
09:49 A little rough.
09:50 - Said he likes boxing more.
09:53 - Well, let's also be honest,
09:55 there's more money to be made in the boxing side too.
09:57 (crowd chattering)
10:00 - One time his title came in the MMA
10:09 was the Pacific Extreme Combat.
10:13 - There's a lot of promotion companies out there
10:16 popping up, Rich.
10:16 The Murata Combat Sports Commission too
10:20 will be good for you.
10:22 - That's next.
10:23 - Beth Durand and Rich Murata,
10:26 president of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
10:28 With a minute to go in the third round,
10:31 Eric Mondragon and Janelle Lausa.
10:33 And you hear the Tagalog being spoken
10:37 'cause we're next to the corner
10:38 of the Filipino Janelle Lausa.
10:40 - Shot from Lausa.
10:46 - Yeah, and a good,
10:47 actually a good counterpunch there.
10:54 The activity should be on the side of Mondragon.
10:57 Leaping with the shot is Lausa.
11:11 You can get caught with that, can't you?
11:15 You leaping like that?
11:16 - Yes, that's good.
11:18 You know, that's a 50/50 shot.
11:20 (crowd shouting)
11:23 - Leaping again.
11:25 Mondragon lands one.
11:28 And Lausa is just all over the place.
11:31 - A lot of missing in that round.
11:32 - Lausa taking a deep breath also.
11:50 - Third round action,
11:51 saw Lausa looking over at his corner for a little advice.
11:54 There wasn't much in the way of clean punches landed,
11:59 just a lot of wild swings in that round.
12:02 (announcer speaking)
12:05 (crowd shouting)
12:08 - All right, fourth round of action,
12:33 scheduled for six, Eric Mondragon, Janelle Lausa.
12:37 Mondragon controlling this fight.
12:39 - Lausa giving you those weird looks.
12:44 - He's trying to be polite here, Rich.
12:47 He's winning the looks category.
12:52 - Clash ahead,
12:53 Barry Cantu checks it out.
12:56 This is the part where Lausa,
13:02 he had 35, stopped his last two fights.
13:07 - Another hit.
13:08 Well, when he runs in like that,
13:11 you know, it's inevitable that's gonna happen.
13:14 Lausa having trouble finding any real fluidity in there,
13:26 a definite strategy from which to operate out of.
13:29 (crowd shouting)
13:32 - Eric Mondragon, or Mondragon as he likes to be called,
13:43 utilizing the jab mostly in this round.
13:47 It makes you thinking maybe he can win the round
13:49 with a jab itself.
13:50 I mean, he's being first controlling.
13:57 (crowd shouting)
13:59 - But just when he's looking to land that right hand,
14:04 Lausa pulls back just enough where he's not tagged.
14:07 This time he ran out of real estate.
14:09 There he is, holding on to Mondragon.
14:11 Mondragon holding him on.
14:13 The MMA starting to break out
14:14 and Jerry Cantu is gonna warn the Filipino.
14:16 He knew what he was doing.
14:19 - Yeah, and he was enjoying it.
14:20 - Yeah.
14:21 This is where maybe the fatigue takes a factor.
14:26 - Lausa, who was stopped in the third round
14:28 in his last fight.
14:28 - If I was him, I'd use more of that MMA stuff.
14:35 - Yeah, make it ugly, why not?
14:36 - 'Cause straight boxing is not working for him
14:39 so far in this fight.
14:40 So he may push the envelope a little here
14:46 and see what he can get away with.
14:48 (crowd shouting)
14:50 (crowd shouting)
14:53 - 30 seconds to go in the round.
15:01 - Lausa, I think you're right.
15:07 I think you're looking a little fatigued in there.
15:09 Look at his face.
15:10 - Mondragon steps on the gas.
15:20 He keeps trying to find that follow up right.
15:22 Eric does it after the jabs.
15:24 Had some success, but limited success with it.
15:28 (bell ringing)
15:33 (crowd applauding)
15:36 (upbeat music)
15:48 (crowd shouting)
15:50 - Dragon coming forward here,
15:52 pushing Janelle into the corner.
15:54 Now this is where Lausa got a little bit funny
15:58 and he had a little smile, the wry smile on his face.
16:01 Well, he was utilizing that strategy
16:03 if you want to call it that.
16:04 (upbeat music)
16:09 (crowd shouting)
16:12 (whistle blowing)
16:23 - Janelle Lausa, 11-2-1 the Filipino.
16:30 He was stopped in the second round in December
16:33 and before that he was stopped in the third round.
16:38 So as we head to the fifth round,
16:39 how will the conditioning factor come in?
16:42 And for Mondragon, the first time fighting since 2022.
16:45 - Prior to those two fights,
16:51 he had not tasted defeat before, Lausa.
16:55 But I think at this point and at this age
16:57 and at this point of this fight,
16:59 he's going to have to decide what he wants, you know?
17:01 And right now, is he just here to show up
17:05 and collect a check?
17:08 - That's what for Mondragon,
17:11 are you gonna step on the gas and put this guy away?
17:13 You're controlling the fight,
17:15 but what are you getting out of this, Rich?
17:18 'Cause you have a guy who just, you could do more.
17:22 - I think he could too.
17:24 He just needs to work, step on the pedal.
17:29 - The work rate.
17:31 - The combination that he keeps trying,
17:34 the left jab, the follow up right.
17:35 It's not a bad idea, but for some reason,
17:38 Lausa, he sees it coming and he just kind of backs off.
17:42 And he has a lot of trouble landing it.
17:44 - Yeah, that draw that he has on his record
17:55 was at the bubble, the MGM bubble that Top Rank had
17:59 back in 2020 during the COVID time.
18:03 - He opened up some eyes there.
18:05 - Eric showing a little variation now in his attack.
18:10 Finally showing some body punches.
18:12 Not just the straight jab, the straight right cross.
18:16 - Eric known around the Southern California club scene.
18:20 Known around the Southern California gyms.
18:33 - Eric Mondragon.
18:34 - But you wanna take the style out of the gym
18:38 and get it into the ring.
18:39 You don't want a sparring partner mentality.
18:41 I mean, this is not a sparring session.
18:45 He lands a good combination.
18:46 I think he's fighting better in this round now.
18:49 Fighting more at least.
18:50 Very unusual stance that left hand.
18:59 - Working for him.
19:03 - And now showing that he can take the shots upstairs.
19:08 Another leaping shot from a Filipino.
19:13 - He blocks a lot of punches out in front.
19:15 He gets those hands out in front of him.
19:17 (speaking in foreign language)
19:21 (bell rings)
19:32 - Heading to the sixth round.
19:40 Beto Duran, Rich Morata here.
19:42 And you're watching Mondragon.
19:45 Eric Mondragon in control of this fight
19:46 against Janelle Lausa.
19:47 We go to the sixth round, Rich.
19:49 If you're in the corner of Mondragon, what do you tell him?
19:51 - I tell him to just pick up your pace a little bit.
19:53 I throw more jabs, but give us some variety
19:57 in what you're doing too.
19:57 Just don't jab, jab, jab, throw the right cross
20:00 and it lands or it doesn't.
20:01 But give us a little something more than that.
20:04 You showed some body punching in that last round.
20:07 I think we could use even more of that.
20:09 - Close the show, huh?
20:10 - Why not?
20:12 But he's fighting Janelle, this man here.
20:16 Janelle Lausa.
20:17 Difficult to hit clean.
20:19 (whistle blows)
20:22 - Get after it.
20:23 Just go.
20:24 - That's gotta be the message from both guys.
20:26 Lausa's behind on points right now.
20:28 He needs to bring it.
20:29 - Yeah, Lausa looks like he might've lost
20:31 every single round.
20:32 So let's bring in advice from Rich Morata.
20:35 (speaking in foreign language)
20:44 (speaking in foreign language)
20:48 - It is the last round.
20:49 They're letting Lausa know that.
20:51 - Yeah, Lausa looks like he has come out to fight.
20:54 You know, like I mentioned in the last round,
20:58 you gotta decide, you know, what do you want here?
21:00 Let's go get it.
21:00 - That's the thing, right?
21:06 What do you want from this?
21:07 What do you want from you moving forward?
21:10 (speaking in foreign language)
21:14 - You know, when you're just a young guy,
21:22 you can say, just get the W and look great next time.
21:27 - Yeah.
21:29 - But when you're 35, as Lausa is here,
21:31 that's not gonna be the message.
21:34 You gotta do something to spark.
21:38 - Yeah, I think it'd be an option for you.
21:39 - Yeah, a right hand from Mondragon.
21:41 Lausa wears it.
21:43 - For the 35, it gets a little harder to pull the trigger.
21:52 (speaking in foreign language)
21:56 - Mondragon, the younger fighter.
21:59 - Good action, though.
22:06 Good action from Mondragon.
22:08 Also coming back after almost a year and a half layoff.
22:11 Good quality rounds, good quality work for Eric.
22:14 That's what you wanna see from him.
22:18 - Exactly.
22:19 - Guy's getting the lather going.
22:21 Been confident, he's controlled this fight, looks good.
22:23 I like what I see from Eric.
22:25 - And he should be able to control the rest of the round
22:30 from this point in.
22:31 Lausa came out, shot his shot at the beginning of the round,
22:35 and now Eric is getting into it.
22:38 - Trying to show that Kobe mentality.
22:40 - That Mamba mentality, does he have it?
22:42 And Lausa's a little wobbly now,
22:44 with 45 seconds to go in the fight.
22:48 Mondragon's sensing something.
22:50 Lausa keeping his hands low.
22:54 He gets tagged and he gets dropped.
22:56 Oh, he asked him to close the show, and he's doing that.
23:00 And Lausa gets hit with an overhand right.
23:07 Tags are wobbly, the 35-year-old Filipino.
23:10 - I think he was deciding as he was on the ground
23:13 whether or not he was gonna get up.
23:14 - And Eric is speeding out there, looking to finish.
23:18 10 seconds to go in the fight.
23:21 Lausa trying to survive.
23:26 And Mondragon gets the victory.
23:32 Good show for Eric Mondragon.
23:36 He dropped Lausa in the sixth and final round.
23:39 - Lausa's up there dancing.
23:43 - Yeah, he's happy to survive.
23:44 - I think he was thinking about it
23:50 when he was down on the canvas,
23:53 and the count was ringing in his ear.
23:55 Do I get up or not?
23:57 How much time do you think is left in this round?
24:00 - That's a good point.
24:01 - There can't be that much time, I'll get up.
24:03 (upbeat music)
24:06 Difficult position for Lausa, of course,
24:21 but you know, especially when you start off your career
24:25 undefeated your first 12 fights,
24:26 you look like you really got it going.
24:28 - Yeah.
24:31 - And then you step up and then it doesn't work all out.
24:34 Eric just put together an accumulation of punches.
24:40 And Janelle, I thought, just kind of voluntarily
24:46 decided to take a rest.
24:47 - Yeah, he got tagged, it was just a matter of time.
24:55 (upbeat music)
24:57 - As we mentioned, you know,
25:03 Eric was coming off a loss too,
25:04 so this was an important fight for him
25:07 to see how he would bounce back.
25:08 - Absolutely, he looked good.
25:10 Shook up a little bit of ring rust.
25:13 - Yeah, he had some at the beginning, I thought,
25:15 the last couple of rounds though, dominated.
25:17 (upbeat music)
25:20 (bell ringing)
25:29 - Ladies and gentlemen, after six exciting rounds
25:33 of boxing action to the judges score cards,
25:35 we go for the official decision.
25:38 All three judges, Sergio Caiz, Cristy Rosario,
25:43 and Ron Scott-Stevens, all seed them out the same.
25:46 60 to 53, all in favor of your winner
25:51 by unanimous decision from Maywood, California,
25:56 Eric Mondragon.
25:58 (bell ringing)
26:04 - Well, apparently Eric didn't kill Sergio.
26:06 - Yeah, he said in Spanish,
26:09 Mondragon gets the victory, he's on nine and one.
26:13 It's good, good for him,
26:14 respect between the two fighters, get the picture.
26:17 - And I thought, you know, he did well in there,
26:21 all things considered, year and a half layoff,
26:24 coming off a loss, awkward opponent in front of him.
26:26 - Yeah, that's a good team right there behind him.
26:29 You have Yuka to the side, Charles Huerta, Maywood boxing,
26:33 all on his side, get the victory for Eric Mondragon.
26:36 Let's look at the highlights from this fight.
26:41 It went to six rounds.
26:43 (crowd cheering)
26:46 And Janelle Lausa knew that his hands fool the veteran,
26:50 and right away, it was Mondragon attacking, jumping out,
26:54 and doing whatever he wanted tonight, Rich.
26:56 - Yeah, I thought, you know, he controlled the fight,
26:58 he won every round, there was no question
26:59 about who was winning the rounds.
27:01 He got a little wild here in portions of the fight,
27:05 and that happens when you haven't fought
27:06 for a good year and a half.
27:10 - He got the victory in the sixth round
27:12 that he wanted, you know, and the fight ended
27:15 the way that he wanted to see it end there,
27:18 in the sixth round.
