00:00 We went over the instructions in the dressing room.
00:01 I expect a clean fight.
00:02 Both of these are right on the line.
00:04 Trunks are good.
00:06 Touch 'em up now. Go back to your corner.
00:09 - Giovanni Santillan told us,
00:11 "I have to win impressively to get the big fights that I want,
00:14 and I want to call those guys out tonight."
00:16 And you know what else?
00:18 It's his father's birthday weekend.
00:19 He turned 62 yesterday,
00:21 and he says, "I want to gift my dad."
00:24 Memo Santillan, well, a victory tonight
00:27 that puts us back on track to be among the top
00:30 at the welterweight division.
00:32 Bernardo Osuna alongside Hall of Famer Timothy Bradley
00:35 here at the Fire Lake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
00:38 Our last fight before we move over to ESPN for our main card
00:43 that will feature Keyshawn Davis
00:46 taking on Francesco Patera.
00:48 And then in our main event,
00:50 the lightweight number-two spot by the IBF
00:53 will be at stake when George Cambosis
00:55 returns from his two losses against Devin Haney
00:58 to take on Maxie Hughes,
01:00 who's on a seven-fight win streak.
01:04 Expectations for Santillan and Bonet?
01:06 - Well, I can just tell you, for Santillan,
01:08 he's been out of the rings for some time.
01:10 You know, he got a lot of ring rust on him.
01:13 So he's gonna take a little time to get acclimated,
01:15 get the feeling back, get hit with those 8-ounce gloves,
01:18 and to get in the rhythm.
01:20 And for Bonet, right now, he's sitting back right now.
01:23 What he's doing is he's just surveying the landscape
01:26 right now. He's a counterpuncher at heart.
01:28 You know, he likes to use his feet to set up his offense.
01:31 This is an open-stance battle,
01:32 which just means a southpaw versus an orthodox fighter.
01:35 And you're looking to place your foot
01:37 on the outside of your opponent
01:39 to be able to line up your backhands.
01:41 That's the reason why it's an open stance.
01:43 The power hand is open for either guy.
01:45 - Bonet had an extensive amateur career
01:52 that spanned over 100 fights out in Ecuador.
01:55 And much like Maxie Hughes in tonight's main event,
01:58 he's sporting a seven-fight win streak.
02:01 That's the good news. The bad news is it was all
02:03 out in his home country of Ecuador
02:05 against subpar competition.
02:07 But, hey, a win is a win, I guess.
02:09 You see the quick hands of Santillan.
02:14 He tends to be a relentless offensive fighter.
02:17 - Again, but he's felt the power of Bonet,
02:20 and he's respecting it.
02:21 And plus, like I said,
02:23 he has to get the feeling back in his legs.
02:26 They call it get your C-legs back.
02:27 You know, he hadn't been hit
02:29 with those eight-ounce gloves in a while.
02:30 I know he's been sparring. I know he's been in the gym,
02:32 but it's a different type of feeling
02:33 when you get hit with those eight ounces
02:35 in the cast in those gloves.
02:38 - Don't use the word "cast," please.
02:40 [laughing]
02:44 That's what it feels like.
02:46 - And Bonet going to the right,
02:48 going to the body with the right hand
02:49 and then the left hand as well.
02:51 So, Bonet making Santillan commit
02:53 and then countering with the right hook to the chin.
02:57 - Suantelo, sigue.
02:58 - See Santillan right now, he's trying to get in close.
03:00 Bonet is finding small little openings on the inside
03:05 with uppercuts and coming around the guard of Santillan.
03:08 - Watch the back.
03:09 - Yeah, for Bonet, when I spoke to him before the fight,
03:11 he told me, "Look, the key to winning this fight
03:14 is I need to box,
03:15 and I need to counter to keep Santillan off balance."
03:18 - The good angles on the inside,
03:19 just small little steps and shifts with the feet of Bonet.
03:24 - There's some information on the right eye
03:26 of Giovanni Santillan,
03:28 who is 30 and 0 with 16 knockouts as a professional,
03:33 and that should put him in an illustrious list of fighters,
03:38 including Jamal Charlo, Terrence Crawford,
03:41 Jerron Boots, Ennis "Tyson" Fury,
03:43 Devin Haney, Giovanni Santillan here,
03:46 and Ray Vargas.
03:47 I mean, these are all guys who are champions pretty much
03:51 with the exception of Boots Ennis.
03:52 - But this is what happens
03:54 when you have all the belts tied up
03:57 with one or two particular guys.
03:59 You know, the other guys, even Boots Ennis,
04:02 they haven't got a shot,
04:03 and I believe that Boots Ennis deserve a shot,
04:05 and I think that this young man
04:06 has fought a plethora of tough top competition.
04:08 He should be in the running for a title opportunity,
04:11 but he's not getting that.
04:13 Another thing that's hurting him is the fact
04:15 that Top Rank don't have a whole lot of 147 pounds.
04:18 That's a problem for him moving forward,
04:20 but I'm hearing through the grapevine
04:22 if he wins this fight tonight,
04:23 there's something special for him on the back end.
04:25 - Yeah, and Josh Taylor needs to move up to 147 pounds.
04:29 That would be an amazing first fight for Josh Taylor,
04:32 battle of southpaws against Giovanni Santillan,
04:35 and when you look at him calling out Alexis Rocha,
04:39 a Golden Boy fighter, a Southern California fight
04:42 that could happen between two guys with power
04:45 and who are desperate to get an opportunity
04:48 at a world title, we'll see what happens,
04:50 because come next weekend,
04:52 we are gonna have an undisputed welterweight champion,
04:55 and that's gonna tie up the belts even further.
04:57 - Exactly, and it is,
04:58 and there's a rematch clause in there as well,
05:00 so it's gonna tie it up a little bit longer,
05:02 but these guys gotta still stay active,
05:05 and they still gotta fight nice, good,
05:07 I would say challenging competition, and continue to win.
05:12 - Go, the same goes for Santillan,
05:14 beautiful left hand right there.
05:16 He stuck his lead hand out and got him to look at it
05:19 and came right behind with a straight left hand
05:21 down the middle.
05:21 Bonet ran right into it.
05:24 But you see the push and pull action that I'm talking about.
05:28 At first, you had Bonet that was coming,
05:31 oh, excuse me, Santillan coming forward,
05:33 now Bonet is coming forward.
05:35 - But Bonet saw that he had success,
05:38 but it was really off the counter,
05:40 you know, we look at Jeremiah Milton,
05:42 who was, you know, waiting on the counter
05:46 and stepping short earlier tonight,
05:47 and you see that left hand from Bonet lands on Santillan,
05:52 that's where he's having his success,
05:53 so maybe just wait on it,
05:55 as we see George Cambosa getting his hands wrapped
05:57 in the locker room.
05:58 - See, what's going on is Santillan's just sitting
06:01 there mid-range and he's not doing anything,
06:03 and then that's when Bonet just takes off.
06:04 As soon as he sees a reaction,
06:06 or some sort of movement from Santillan,
06:08 he beats him to the punch right away.
06:10 - There's that jab, there's that sick.
06:15 - Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
06:21 Bring those punches up, let's go.
06:22 - Bonet with the first warning for low blows.
06:25 - See, Santillan, he has two different styles,
06:33 you know, he's a boxer,
06:34 I brought him in for my camp against Manny Pacquiao.
06:37 He has good feet, knows how to box,
06:39 knows how to fight off the back foot
06:40 and get angles and things,
06:41 and so he signed up and teamed up with the Garcias,
06:46 and they taught him how to fight in the inside,
06:49 you know, and how to rumble,
06:50 and having all that tough sparring down there
06:52 at Robert Garcia's academy is no joke,
06:55 you learn really fast on the job.
06:57 - Yeah, I mean, at RGB out in Riverside,
07:00 you sink or swim because those dudes are dogs
07:02 and they're coming to get you
07:04 and they're making you fight,
07:05 they're making you fight every day and get better,
07:09 and Santillan is having a tough time early on
07:14 with the boxing skills of Eric Bonet.
07:18 All right, we saw George Cambosa's getting his hand wraps on
07:23 as we lead into tonight's main event,
07:25 but Tim, take us to your lab on George Cambosa.
07:28 - Hey, check this out, this lab was generated
07:30 off some of the mistakes that I saw George making
07:32 in his last fight against Devin Haney.
07:34 I mean, I don't know what this is
07:36 or what he was trying to attempt,
07:37 but this right here looked like some happy feats of me.
07:40 He's switching stances from some orthodox to Southpaw,
07:44 and where is he?
07:45 He is right there, mid-range,
07:47 right in front of Devin Haney,
07:49 and Devin Haney didn't make him pay,
07:50 but that's a no-no.
07:52 You don't wanna be switching stances
07:53 to get caught while you're switching
07:55 directly in front of your opponent.
07:57 You can do it far out,
07:58 but this is what happens when you do it too close.
08:00 Here he is, one foot in, one foot out,
08:03 one foot in, and guess what happens?
08:06 He catches him with a nice right hand,
08:07 times him perfectly right before he steps on his front foot.
08:10 And another thing that I noticed,
08:12 George, he carries his hands low.
08:13 He fighting a slick boxer tonight,
08:15 a guy that likes to use his jab and throw straight shots.
08:17 Well, he's gonna have a lot of openings.
08:19 If George keeps those hands low, guess what?
08:20 There's gonna be a lot of opportunities
08:22 for a guy like Maxie Hughes to land his offense,
08:25 and there it is again.
08:27 Another illustration, hands are dropped low.
08:29 It's okay, you can have your hands down low.
08:31 It's all good, but if you don't take care
08:33 of your responsibility and move your head
08:34 out of the line of fire, when the punch is coming your way,
08:37 you gonna get hit in your mouth.
08:39 - You know what else hits you in the mouth?
08:41 - Who? - The jab.
08:42 And Giovanni Santillan so far has a 21 to three lead
08:47 over Eric Bonet, although Bonet has just a one punch
08:52 less landed with 31 to 32 favoring Giovanni Santillan,
08:57 but Bonet's had some really effective punches on Santillan.
09:01 - Bonet is sneaky.
09:02 You know, he'll move left and move right,
09:04 and then he'll come with a left hook,
09:05 right hand down the middle.
09:07 You know, he's shooting his spots wisely.
09:09 And then you have Santillan on the other hand
09:11 is shooting his jab, he's standing within himself,
09:13 but when he lets his hands go, he does a lot of damage.
09:16 He lands a lot of his offense.
09:18 But this is high, this is a high-paced fight.
09:21 This is a chess match right here.
09:23 - It is. - It's a high-paced chess match.
09:25 There's a lot of skill going on in the ring
09:27 by both of these men.
09:28 - How much of the early success of Bonet
09:30 do you attribute to the ring rust of El Gallo de Oro,
09:33 Giovanni Santillan, or is it just Bonet
09:35 being, doing what he does best?
09:37 - Well, Bonet had a great game plan coming in.
09:41 You know, let Santillan come.
09:43 He's gonna make mistakes.
09:44 He's gonna get a little bit urgent.
09:46 He ain't been in the ring in a while.
09:48 And then, you know, some of it could be Santillan.
09:50 The fact that he's been out of the ring for so long.
09:52 I told you, it takes you about four rounds
09:53 to get acclimated.
09:55 It's a 10 round fight.
09:56 You usually, when you have a guy
09:58 that hasn't been in the fight,
10:00 in a very long time, you usually warm him up
10:02 really well inside the locker room.
10:05 So you want him to come out dripping wet.
10:08 So that way, he can start a little sooner
10:10 once he get in there.
10:12 - Santillan's stick starting to find a home
10:15 on the face of Eric Bonet,
10:19 who told me, look man, the spark is back
10:21 after taking several fights on bad advice.
10:24 I mean, four of his six losses
10:25 have been against world champions,
10:27 so he's no slouch.
10:28 And you see why, because he's a tough out in there.
10:32 Because when you over commit, he makes you pay.
10:35 - Yeah, I'm starting to see Bonet's technique
10:39 starting to go by the wayside already.
10:41 Getting a little bit of arm weary.
10:43 You know, I know Santillan's been out of the ring,
10:45 and sometimes that affects your stamina as well
10:47 when you're out of the ring for some time.
10:49 You know, but seems like Santillan
10:54 is in total control right now.
10:55 He knows what he's doing.
10:56 His eyes are wide open.
10:58 He's landing the cleaner shots.
10:59 Every now and then, Bonet will sneak something
11:01 around his guard when he's out of position.
11:03 But right now, I think Santillan's in total control
11:06 of this round so far.
11:07 - There's that quick flurry from Santillan.
11:13 Good defensive responsibility,
11:15 but Bonet does get to land a little bit
11:18 of that right hand over the glove of Santillan.
11:20 And then Santillan makes him pay with the right hook.
11:23 There's a left hook from Santillan.
11:25 A good close to round number three.
11:27 Expect to see a lot of this in our main event,
11:30 but in our co-main, it'll be Keyshawn Davis,
11:32 who's with Mark Creagle.
11:33 - Keyshawn, you're coming out on national TV tonight.
11:38 You want a title as soon as you can.
11:40 What do you want people to leave this arena
11:42 saying tonight about you?
11:44 - Give him a title.
11:46 He's ready for it.
11:47 You know, I've been working for a title shot
11:50 all my life, starting with the Olympics.
11:52 And once I conquered my dream, going to the Olympics,
11:56 now I'm working to become a world champion.
11:58 After tonight, I want people to say,
12:00 "Man, give him a shot.
12:01 "That kid is ready."
12:03 - Man, you on the fast track.
12:04 Your opponent, Francesco Patera, has 31 fights.
12:08 He's 30 years old.
12:10 He ain't a chump.
12:11 He's also never been down.
12:13 Does that streak end tonight?
12:15 - Honestly, every fight I go for the knockout.
12:18 I'm not even gonna lie.
12:18 I just do it in a strategic, smart way.
12:20 Me being at my best,
12:24 I feel like nobody can go 10 or 12 rounds with me.
12:27 And I feel like I'm at my best every night.
12:29 You know what I'm saying?
12:30 Burgos got lucky.
12:31 But 10 or 12 rounds,
12:33 I feel like nobody can survive with me.
12:35 So tonight, expect a stoppage.
12:37 - There you go.
12:38 Back to you, Bernardo.
12:39 - Burgos went the distance with Keyshawn Davis.
12:42 Then he went the distance 10 rounds
12:44 in debut of Cuban gold medalist Andy Cruz,
12:47 last man to beat Keyshawn Davis in the Olympics.
12:51 And that's cute.
12:52 I mean, that's a fight we all want to see, though.
12:54 - That's cute.
12:55 Yeah, that's cute.
12:56 I ain't worried about that.
12:57 This is a pro game.
12:58 It's a different game than the amateur game.
13:00 You know?
13:01 So, good for him.
13:03 (laughs)
13:05 But I can just tell you this.
13:07 - You hear that confidence?
13:09 You hear the way this young man speaks?
13:11 - I do hear it.
13:11 - Like, man, do you hear that often?
13:13 - No.
13:14 - You don't hear that type of confidence.
13:15 And he understands who he is already
13:19 in his eighth professional fight.
13:21 You know how long it took me to realize
13:23 that I was the man?
13:24 - Forever, ever?
13:25 - No, I'm just saying.
13:26 Like, you know what?
13:27 I'm the man.
13:28 I know what I'm capable of doing.
13:29 I see my opponent.
13:31 I know how to break him down.
13:32 It took me some time.
13:33 It took me to go in the world championship
13:34 to know that I was a bad boy.
13:36 - And you know why he knows he's a bad boy?
13:37 He said, "Because I already saw what Floyd Schofield did.
13:40 "I saw what Frank Martin did.
13:42 "I saw what Andy Cruz did.
13:43 "Now watch what I'm gonna do tonight."
13:45 He has his chance when we move over to ESPN at 10 Eastern.
13:50 (crowd chattering)
13:53 - And not even to mention how the show's gonna start
13:56 with Keyshawn.
13:57 No surprise action for you guys.
13:59 Don't miss it.
14:01 - Little bit more boxing from Santiago.
14:02 I like what I'm seeing from him.
14:04 Little bit more boxing on his back foot.
14:07 Pressing forward.
14:08 Now Santiago's looking to make Bonet pay for his mistakes.
14:18 He's looking for him to overcommit.
14:20 Or make a mistake or get himself out of position.
14:22 - But Santillan is really over,
14:24 the last two combinations he threw
14:26 were really over committed.
14:27 He's getting a little bit greedy there against Bonet.
14:29 That's a dangerous position because that's what can happen
14:32 with Bonet's county punching ability.
14:34 - See, Bonet's coming forward now.
14:35 He's being the wave.
14:37 He's coming in.
14:39 That's what he wants to be.
14:40 He's being aggressive
14:41 and he's looking for Santillan to make a mistake.
14:43 He's trying to force him into a disadvantageous position
14:46 just with his pressure.
14:48 And occasionally with his punches as well.
14:50 You see that looping shot.
14:51 It's fighting at home.
14:53 On the head and on the face and chin of Santillan.
14:55 This is a really good fight.
15:03 This is a lot of back and forth action right here.
15:06 Some tough rounds to score.
15:07 - And we saw what tends to happen
15:09 with a southpaw and an orthodox fighter
15:10 when Santillan tripped on the foot of Eric Bonet
15:14 just a few seconds earlier.
15:17 - And you got to worry about
15:18 with these big shots that they're throwing,
15:19 you got to worry about head clashes as well.
15:21 Both these guys are leaning forward,
15:22 trying to land lethal shots, death blows on each other.
15:25 And you got to be careful that a head clash may happen.
15:29 - Good body shot from Eric Bonet.
15:32 - Yes, it was.
15:33 - Digging that right to the body again.
15:34 - Bolo. - To close out this round.
15:36 - Bolo.
15:37 - Eric Bonet goes back to his corner
15:39 where he'll receive instructions from Eriqui Alvarez.
15:44 - And this is a young man who is as credible opponent
15:49 as you will see.
15:51 His losses have been against champions.
15:53 Sean Porter, Chris Algieri in 2015,
15:56 Miguel Tito de Vasquez dropped him,
15:58 Sergey Liponets, all of them former world titleists.
16:01 So Tim, although his record sports 27 wins and six losses,
16:06 I mean, these have been against legitimate opponents
16:09 in world champions.
16:11 You know, some guys can get there, but they just can't win.
16:15 They can't get over that hump.
16:17 He's one of those guys, Bonet,
16:18 he's fought tough competitions, yes,
16:20 but he's never been able to really overcome.
16:23 You know, sometimes it can be a lack of skill.
16:26 You know, as we see right now,
16:28 it's not a lack of ability at all.
16:29 He can fight.
16:30 The other guys are just better.
16:32 - And through the ropes, right under Mike Baszle,
16:34 you see one of the men who beat Eric Bonet.
16:36 And that is none other than Chris Algieri
16:39 doing the commentary alongside Christina Poncher
16:42 and Jamell Herring, who says, "I'm coming back."
16:47 - Oh my goodness.
16:49 Come on, Jamell.
16:50 Don't come back.
16:52 - Stay retired.
16:53 You're doing well as a commentator.
16:54 - Yeah, you're doing real great as a commentator, man.
16:56 Don't do it.
16:57 - Let's take a look at the power punches by round so far.
17:01 And Bonet coming out on top in both third and fourth rounds
17:06 and actually throughout the fight against Santillan.
17:11 - Those right and left hooks, he's landing on Santillan.
17:13 Santillan squares up a whole heck of a lot
17:15 when he's attacking.
17:16 You know, he gives it away.
17:18 He squares his body up when he attacks.
17:20 - I was actually pretty surprised, Tim,
17:23 that he won the power punch,
17:25 the statistical battle against Santillan
17:29 in every single round.
17:30 - Ooh, nice.
17:35 Nice, beautiful jab, right?
17:36 - It was a splitting jab.
17:37 It was an inside jab.
17:38 You know, a lot of times when you're facing a southpaw,
17:40 you try to look to land your jab over the top of his hand.
17:43 It's a position battle with the lead hand,
17:45 but you can sometimes sneak it underneath.
17:48 You see, you know, top fighters do it.
17:50 I've seen Usyk do it, seen Shakur do it.
17:52 A lot of top fighters do that.
17:54 But that was a good, good jab right there from Bonet.
17:57 He did it again.
18:00 That time he followed with a right hand,
18:02 but he didn't hit, he didn't land with those shots.
18:06 (crowd chattering)
18:09 - There's a nice overhand left from Santillan
18:13 landing on Bonet.
18:14 Now he's trying to find a rhythm,
18:16 but there's an answer for Bonet
18:18 every time Santillan throws.
18:19 - So that's called a catch and shoot.
18:23 Sometimes he'll catch it on his body.
18:24 Sometimes he'll catch it on the arms, on the shoulders.
18:27 And you see Bonet, he'll react.
18:29 The same side he gets hit with,
18:32 he's reacting with that hand.
18:35 He's throwing a punch with that hand.
18:37 That's called a catch and shoot.
18:43 - There's a lot of catch and release
18:48 from drivers coming in from Oklahoma City Airport
18:52 to show in the Oklahoma.
18:53 - Oh my gosh.
18:54 - Shout out to all our crew.
18:57 - Shout out to our crew, man.
18:59 Work hard here.
19:00 - A lot of people got jacked on the way up here.
19:03 - Nice right hand from Bonet.
19:05 Got you Santillan stiff.
19:07 And that was a great combination from Bonet.
19:10 Finding a rhythm.
19:11 - He buzzed him with that shot.
19:13 Anytime you see a fighter,
19:14 he bounces in one place for just a split second
19:16 after getting hit with a hard shot.
19:18 That means he's buzzed him, he rocked him.
19:20 - 10 seconds.
19:32 - Bonet tonight is opportunistic.
19:35 When Santillan throws, he makes him pay.
19:38 And speaking of opportunistic,
19:41 Maxie Hughes has traveled all the way from Australia
19:44 to fight George Camboses Jr.
19:46 A fight he personally lobbied to get
19:49 after not getting the matchups he wanted
19:51 in his previous contract.
19:52 - I was out of contract with Matt Shum
19:56 and looking for a big fight.
19:57 None was presenting itself to me.
19:59 Reached out to Lou DiBella who looks after George.
20:03 He had no titles and I thought he's gonna be looking
20:06 for a big fight.
20:07 So I thought, throw my name in there.
20:09 Let's see if he takes the bait.
20:11 Let's see if he wants to fight me.
20:12 And you know, within a week of me reaching out,
20:15 we had the offer.
20:16 It's gonna cement myself on the world stage
20:19 against a proven world-class fighter in George.
20:21 My style against his style, my boxing IQ,
20:24 how adaptable I am in the ring.
20:28 I just think I've got what it takes.
20:29 If George has not done his due diligence,
20:32 then he's gonna be in for a very, very long night tonight.
20:35 - I'm Ron Burgundy and Maxie Hughes is not from Australia.
20:42 He's from England.
20:43 He's fighting an Australian tonight in George Camboses.
20:46 I gotta give that, you know, lesson of geography
20:49 to my friend Tim Bradley just so you know,
20:51 'cause I know how much you love Australia.
20:53 - I'm not going there, man.
20:56 I'm not going there.
20:57 - So, Bonet outlanding Santillan by three punches so far
21:00 and at a 37% clip compared to 30.
21:04 So, Bonet definitely in this fight
21:07 through the first half. - Yes, he is.
21:09 Yes, he is.
21:10 And you know, I don't see the sharpness from Santillan
21:12 and that's again, that right there is being off
21:16 inactivity, that's what it does to you.
21:18 It doesn't allow you to be sharp.
21:19 It doesn't allow you to sharpen your skills.
21:21 I don't care how often you stay in the gym
21:23 and you work out and you spar and you do it so forth.
21:26 You still gotta come out here
21:28 and perform under these bright lights.
21:29 That's important.
21:31 That's gaining an experience and that's sharpening your tools.
21:33 All the stuff that you worked on inside the gym,
21:36 you put it on display.
21:38 - Santillan had success with the right hand
21:43 at the early onset of this round.
21:46 Now, digging to the body, but like I said,
21:48 every time Santillan throws, Bonet punches with him
21:52 and that's one of his biggest assets.
21:54 So he's punching with him and he's punching after him.
21:57 That's why he's having success
21:58 because Santillan's not moving his position after.
22:02 He's letting his hands go, Bonet will let his hands go
22:04 and then he will try to finish with a combination.
22:07 - He's admiring his work is what you're telling me
22:09 and not getting out of the way.
22:10 - Yes.
22:11 - Nice overhand right, a straight right there
22:15 from Eric Bonet.
22:17 Santillan threw his shot, made him miss and he made him pay.
22:20 - He Bonet threw a throw away uppercut.
22:22 He came down, leaned down, threw an uppercut,
22:24 tried to split the guards of Santillan.
22:26 Santillan pulled out of range, dropping his guards
22:29 and got hit with the right hand.
22:30 There was an attempt there,
22:35 that jab was just to keep Santillan occupied
22:38 and that right hand coming right behind it.
22:40 That's the perfect shot that you want to land
22:41 against the southpaw.
22:42 - Nice liver shot from Giovanni Santillan.
22:45 - Santillan is seemingly having a hard time
22:51 finding his rhythm right now.
22:53 He's starting to get into a groove right here
22:54 in the inside, but too far and in between.
22:59 There it is, Bonet landing those big shots.
23:01 Stopping the action.
23:03 - And even when Santillan has success,
23:06 the last thing the judges see is Bonet landing something.
23:11 - Yes, because Bonet is throwing with him
23:13 and he's ending again, he's ending the action as well.
23:17 - You see some inflammation under the left eye
23:20 of Eric Bonet, inflammation under the right eye
23:22 of Giovanni Santillan, who has some success
23:24 with the uppercut combination and then a right hook.
23:27 - So this battle right now is starting to turn
23:29 into a battle of attrition.
23:31 Both guys are having their way, they're exchanging,
23:33 they're going back and forth
23:34 and landing big shots on each other.
23:36 So whoever has the best conditioning, one,
23:38 and determination and the will to win
23:40 is going to pull off this fight.
23:43 - Good finish here to round number six and through six,
23:47 Bonet with 109 landed punches compared to 101 from Santillan.
23:51 Let's listen in to Robert Garcia in the red corner.
23:53 - Nothing, don't worry about it.
24:01 - We got four more rounds.
24:04 You gotta let those combinations go, son.
24:07 - They've gotta start walking them down.
24:13 - All right, you gotta start throwing more combinations.
24:15 - You got four more rounds, okay?
24:17 You feel good and sufficient to do it?
24:19 Okay, then let's go.
24:20 (speaking in foreign language)
24:21 More combinations and work on that with your right hook.
24:24 (speaking in foreign language)
24:28 - You gotta use that right hand.
24:29 You gotta keep using that right hand.
24:31 His left eye is getting swollen,
24:34 so you gotta work that eye.
24:35 Just keep touching it.
24:37 Don't let him move without being touched.
24:42 - Let's go, we're gonna come in this together, okay?
24:44 (speaking in foreign language)
24:45 - Throw punches and move your head.
24:46 Those are the instructions from Robert Garcia
24:50 for Giovanni Santillan.
24:51 He was brought on five fights ago by his father, Memo,
24:55 said, "I need my son to improve,
24:56 "and there's no one better to get him to the next level
24:59 "than Robert Garcia."
25:00 Well, that'll be put to the test over the next 12 minutes
25:04 as the power punches in the last round
25:06 favored Bonet once again, 25 to 16.
25:10 - See, that's what you wanna see.
25:11 You wanna see your pupil go out there
25:13 and do exactly what you told him to do.
25:16 That's what a champion does.
25:21 Those are qualities of a champion.
25:22 You see, you heard what Robert Garcia told Santillan
25:25 what he needed to do,
25:26 and he's going out there and following the instructions.
25:29 He's doing exactly what he's told him to do.
25:32 Pressure, pressure.
25:34 Get on him, let your hands go.
25:36 - Pressure, bust pipes, and that's what
25:40 Giovanni Santillan is trying to do here against Eric Bonet,
25:44 who may be in the lead after six rounds.
25:46 It's a very tight fight.
25:48 - And pressure, it breaks wheels, too, wheels.
25:51 You know, that's the main objective.
25:53 Break the wheel of your opposition any way you can.
25:56 - Eric Bonet's been facing subpar competition in Ecuador,
26:07 getting his last seven victories.
26:09 They've won 35% of their fights
26:11 compared to Santillan's opponents,
26:13 who won 86% of the last five fights.
26:16 We'll see how that plays out down the stretch in this fight,
26:19 because Bonet does not seem to be deterred at all
26:23 by the combination punching of Santillan,
26:25 as there's an answer for everything
26:27 the man with the red trunks throws.
26:29 - And Bonet was in a southpaw stance.
26:31 I don't know if you guys saw that.
26:32 He was in a southpaw stance throwing hooks
26:34 and uppercuts from a different angle.
26:37 And that surprised Santillan,
26:38 'cause he was used to the punches coming
26:40 from the right angle, from the right side,
26:42 but not from that southpaw angle.
26:44 - Ooh, what a nice left from Bonet.
26:48 - Yes, it was.
26:49 So, nice left from Santillan.
26:51 - Ooh, what a straight right from Bonet,
27:03 snaps the head of Santillan back.
27:05 - Just letting his hands go, that's what things do.
27:07 It creates opportunities for itself.
27:10 When you don't have a guy that's not moving his head,
27:11 keeping his head directly in the line,
27:13 you throw straight shots at him, guess what?
27:15 Something eventually is gonna get in,
27:16 and that's what happened to Santillan.
27:18 Sitting there, looking pretty, thought he was out of range,
27:22 thought a couple of shots was coming,
27:23 then bing, bing, he gets hit with that right hand.
27:25 - One and a half inch reach advantage for Bonet,
27:27 but it's the speed, precision, and counter punching
27:30 that has really done a job on Giovanni Santillan.
27:35 - All right, this Tuesday, we don't want you to miss
27:38 Stephen Fulton putting his WBC and WBO
27:41 junior featherweight titles on the line in Japan on ESPN+.
27:46 He'll be facing Naoya Inoue,
27:47 his sixth undefeated opponent,
27:49 making the fourth defense of his belt.
27:51 - This is a great challenge for me.
27:57 I'm putting myself out of my element.
27:59 We're in his country, he'll be comfortable.
28:01 Me, I'm defending over there,
28:03 so I have to do everything I gotta do
28:05 to bring my titles back, defend, and defeat him.
28:10 And we both have a name.
28:11 He has his country behind him,
28:13 as well as his knockout power.
28:14 You know, he's a technical fighter,
28:16 I'm a technical fighter.
28:17 He's a smart fighter, I'm a smart fighter.
28:19 When you put those type of fighters together,
28:21 it kinda shakes the divisions up.
28:25 When you're the underdog,
28:26 you're like overlooked or underlooked,
28:28 however you wanna put it.
28:30 I've seen and heard a lot of things
28:32 that people were saying about the power,
28:35 or he may not have the chin,
28:37 or this person, or anyways, is this and he's that,
28:40 and it's like, I like that.
28:42 I like those type of comments.
28:43 That made me like, all right, they don't believe in me.
28:46 Well, let's make 'em believers.
28:47 Going out to Japan and defeating him in his country,
28:50 that's major.
28:52 - What a credit to who he is as a person,
28:58 who he is as a fighter, Stephen Fulton,
29:00 going all the way to Japan.
29:02 You won't wanna miss the fight on ESPN+ Live,
29:05 starting at 4 a.m. Eastern Time.
29:08 That's where our coverage starts.
29:09 If you're not up at that time,
29:11 you can always check it out on ESPN+ On Demand.
29:15 - Yeah, no one's separated himself yet.
29:18 I mean, it's been too much back and forth.
29:20 You know, I don't know how these rounds are going,
29:22 and you can look at the punch stats,
29:24 all you want is Sabon,
29:25 they had won the first half of this fight,
29:27 but I don't know, I'm not sure.
29:30 - Still looking for some separation.
29:31 I see Santillan starting to step up the tempo a little bit.
29:34 Bernardo, stepping on the gas pedal.
29:37 - Ooh, there's a nice double left hand.
29:39 Buzzed him, you see the legs?
29:40 - I did.
29:41 Let's see if he can follow it up,
29:42 or if Bonet can get Santillan off of him.
29:46 Think they sense the urgency for Santillan
29:48 to do something special here in this eighth round,
29:51 but then you put yourself in harm's way,
29:53 as Bonet is excellent with that counter right.
29:56 - And his recuperative powers are no joke either.
29:58 He got hit with that shot,
29:59 and he bounced right back and got back to action.
30:02 To fend off Santillan.
30:05 - He was dropped twice in round five,
30:06 and his loss against Sean Porter.
30:08 Can Santillan do something special here
30:12 over the last couple of rounds?
30:15 The blood emanating from the nose of Bonet,
30:19 his right, his left eye is closing up.
30:22 That could be a dangerous situation.
30:25 - That's developing for Bonet.
30:27 You see the intent look of Santillan,
30:30 who's now starting to close in,
30:32 but that right hand of Bonet is always in range.
30:35 There it is, a right uppercut from Bonet.
30:40 That right hand is always in striking range.
30:42 Or Santillan puts himself in the right hand striking range.
30:46 There it is again.
30:53 (crowd chattering)
30:57 Body work from Bonet.
30:58 - Ah, get that up.
31:01 Do it.
31:01 - Santillan snaps his head back,
31:04 and then he has his head snapped back by Bonet right.
31:07 - Boy, a lot of back and forth action, my goodness.
31:14 Both guys taking some heavy shots.
31:16 I'm pretty impressed with Santillan's condition,
31:18 and although he's been out of the ring for over a year,
31:20 or just about almost a year, I should say.
31:24 I'm impressed by Bonet tonight.
31:27 - I'm impressed with Bonet as well.
31:28 I mean, he's fighting back in spurts.
31:29 He's doing his thing as well,
31:31 and he's had a ton of opportunities
31:32 to land some significant shots on Santillan,
31:37 but Santillan is not deterred either.
31:40 This is back and forth action.
31:42 - And that's gonna be a tough job for the judges
31:44 to come away with a decision,
31:47 because these rounds are very, very close.
31:51 - Razor thin.
31:52 - Nice body work from Bonet.
31:53 - Oh my goodness.
31:55 - All right, let's listen in to Giovanni Santillan's corner
31:58 again with Robert Garcia.
31:59 - He's got nothing left.
32:10 Come on, son.
32:13 - Those combinations.
32:20 - You know what this is?
32:21 Boom, boom, boom.
32:22 Two, three, four punches at a time.
32:24 All right?
32:25 (speaking in foreign language)
32:29 Take a deep breath.
32:30 - Oh yeah, just check out this,
32:39 how and why Santillan was landing his left hand
32:42 right down the middle.
32:43 Whoa, nice little flicking shot right there from Santillan.
32:48 See the little flick jab at the eyes?
32:49 You see the gloves move right there from Bonet.
32:53 And Santillan just changing the directory of his punch.
32:57 Excuse me.
32:58 - Bring him up.
32:58 - With a left hook on the temple.
33:01 - All right, the punch is landed by a round.
33:03 Santillan gets the advantage in that eighth round,
33:07 and that evens up.
33:08 The punch connects at 157 for the first time
33:12 during this entire fight.
33:14 The left eye of Bonet is starting to be worrisome
33:17 because of the inflammation.
33:18 Referee Chris Flores warned Bonet
33:21 to keep those punches up last round.
33:23 So a lot of flying elements out there that could change
33:27 what happens in this fight.
33:28 Nice right hand from Santillan.
33:31 That'll change the fight.
33:32 - That was good.
33:34 That was great.
33:35 Nice combinations.
33:36 And you know, Santillan looks like he has the better legs
33:39 on the tail end of this fight.
33:42 Really pushing forward with that combination.
33:44 Finishing straight left hand.
33:47 - And for the corner of Bonet,
33:48 it's the fact that he was hit by two right hooks
33:51 that he didn't see coming because that visibility
33:54 is limited by the inflammation.
33:56 Of that left eye.
34:00 There it is again.
34:01 Punches that he was making Santillan miss
34:04 that now are finding a home.
34:06 - That right hand keeps finding a home for Bonet.
34:09 - Yes, that's been throughout.
34:11 - Bonet is sneaky.
34:13 He's just footwork, subtle footwork, left and right,
34:15 little shifts and turns.
34:16 - He's doing it.
34:17 Stop, stop.
34:18 - Putting himself in position and catching Santillan
34:20 as he tries to attack.
34:21 He's clever in the ring, man.
34:24 - He really is.
34:25 - Look at that uppercut.
34:26 You don't see that against the southpaw.
34:27 He threw an uppercut, then a right hand behind it.
34:30 Bonet did.
34:31 - The left uppercut against the southpaw.
34:33 - That's creative.
34:35 Creative combinations right there.
34:36 Good flurry right there from Santillan.
34:41 Staying tight, staying underneath himself.
34:44 He feels he has Bonet.
34:46 - On the line, he feels that he's weakening.
34:49 - And there's that combination.
34:51 Bonet reels backwards and there is the power
34:54 of Giovanni Santillan.
34:56 He goes low there twice,
34:57 but this is a Giovanni Santillan we expected to see.
35:01 And I don't know how much that swollen left eye of Bonet
35:06 is allowing Santillan to be that effective here
35:09 down the stretch.
35:10 - Power shots are starting to add up.
35:13 The activity of Bonet is starting to add up
35:15 and Santillan is digging deep.
35:16 - Now you see the blood on the nose of Bonet.
35:21 - See, and the crazy part is you see,
35:27 Bonet, when he gets in a bad spot,
35:30 Santillan starts coming on.
35:31 What he starts doing is dropping body shots.
35:33 That's the way you keep your opponent off of you,
35:35 especially if he's throwing heat on you.
35:37 You hit him with a body shot, he's gonna back up.
35:39 - And you know what?
35:40 Santillan was forced to drop down that left hand
35:43 to protect the body.
35:44 And then the right hands of Bonet found a home.
35:46 - Look at the straight left hand.
35:47 - There's a Santillan connecting as well.
35:50 What a round.
35:51 - My goodness.
35:52 From that first heavyweight fight we did
35:54 in this fight right here,
35:55 this is entertaining right here for you folks at home.
35:58 - All right, let's listen in to the corner of Eric Bonet
36:00 on the beat, Enrique Alvarez,
36:02 with the instructions for the man with the bloody nose.
36:05 - You have the whole motherfucking whole fight.
36:07 - Speed up, speed up, speed up.
36:10 - Speed up for Fundo.
36:11 - This is the last round, son.
36:12 - This is the last round, son.
36:14 - We go to the 10th and final round.
36:17 (crowd cheering)
36:19 (speaking in foreign language)
36:22 - Breathe, son.
36:23 This is your last round, Bonet.
36:25 This is it.
36:26 For your life.
36:28 We can't just stay here.
36:30 Give me all your effort.
36:35 We didn't come to lose.
36:38 We came here to win, man.
36:40 Come on, you understand?
36:42 We have no option to lose.
36:44 Yeah, I took out his ear.
36:47 That was a nice body shot.
36:48 Hey, let him go here.
36:53 Don't get overconfident, though.
36:55 I mean, those were solid instructions in each corner.
37:03 - Both corners.
37:05 You know, trying to inspire the man,
37:06 trying to uplift him,
37:07 let him know that he can win this fight.
37:12 - A lot of close rounds throughout this fight.
37:15 It's Santillan with a 183 to 182 connect advantage,
37:19 but I don't think those numbers do justice
37:20 to what we're seeing in this ring anyway.
37:22 - It's a must-win round for either guy right here.
37:25 Whoever wins this round probably is gonna win the fight.
37:27 It's just my opinion.
37:29 I haven't scored the match,
37:32 but this is an important round to win.
37:33 - I have it five to four, Bonet,
37:37 but there's a lot of really close rounds in there.
37:41 - Again, and so Santillan, you have it that way.
37:44 Santillan can't afford to lose this round.
37:46 He has to win this round,
37:47 and he has to win this round big.
37:49 - And Bonet cannot believe that that's the way
37:52 the judges are scoring it,
37:54 because he's the visiting fighter.
37:55 Santillan is the house fighter.
37:57 I mean, it is what it is in the sport of boxing,
37:59 and that's why his corner was--
38:01 Ooh, that's a low blow.
38:02 - He's gonna take a point.
38:03 He's warned him a lot.
38:04 He's warned him often.
38:05 - You gotta get that up, okay?
38:06 Come on.
38:07 - That would be a fight-changing point.
38:09 - He's lucky on that one.
38:11 He was extremely lucky on that one.
38:13 - And it didn't stray that low.
38:15 I mean, it was a low blow,
38:16 but it wasn't like an intentional low blow.
38:20 - No, but he'd been warning him quite a bit
38:22 throughout the course of the night on the shots being low.
38:25 - But he didn't give him an official warning.
38:27 - And I'm glad that he didn't.
38:28 - Yes, I agree.
38:29 Santillan having to load up,
38:33 and Bonet taking advantage with the shorter, sharper shots.
38:37 - Again, he's going down to a battle of attrition.
38:40 It seemed like Santillan was just waiting,
38:42 waiting to surge,
38:44 waiting on Bonet to drain a little bit more energy
38:49 before he comes on or to back into this fight.
38:51 - But there's no quitting, Bonet.
38:53 - There isn't.
38:53 And that's what he was hoping for.
38:56 - But Bonet, he's coming back.
38:57 Oh, got him with blood in my eye.
39:00 - Oh, no.
39:00 - Geez.
39:04 - Can you get me a wipe, a wet wipe, man?
39:07 Blood in my eye, man.
39:07 I hope you got a TV shot, bro.
39:10 - Oh, that's a good combination from Giovanni Santillan.
39:14 We'll get you some eye wash.
39:17 No, for real.
39:18 Nice right hand there from Santillan.
39:20 Stops Bonet in his tracks,
39:21 but here comes the Ecuadorian as well.
39:24 - Man, I'm just gonna be quiet.
39:26 I just wanna listen to this action.
39:28 (crowd cheering)
39:31 - Half a minute left to determine the winner here
39:45 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
39:47 Santillan and Bonet giving everything over the last
39:52 29 minutes and 30 seconds.
39:56 (crowd cheering)
39:59 - Wow.
40:03 Wow, what a battle.
40:06 What a battle.
40:07 Heart, determination, will to win.
40:09 Both guys put it on display tonight.
40:12 What a great demonstration of what, you know,
40:14 being a tough, gritty fighter is.
40:17 Both these guys, man.
40:18 Woo.
40:19 I hate to be there by them tomorrow.
40:21 - Hate to be their face tomorrow.
40:23 They gonna feel it.
40:23 I mean, you're the one that's been there and done that
40:26 and had this type of fight.
40:28 So I'm gonna just defer to you on that side.
40:32 What a way to finish.
40:33 Both Giovanni Santillan and Eric Bonet.
40:36 We talk about fighters leaving here
40:38 with nothing in the tank.
40:39 Both of these guys left nothing in the tank.
40:41 - You know, that's what it's all about
40:43 because then at the end of the day, you say,
40:45 you know what, I did my very best.
40:46 Win, lose, or draw, you put it all out there
40:48 for the fans to see.
40:49 And the fans love that.
40:51 That's what the fans love to see.
40:52 They love to see your heart on display.
40:54 And that's what we saw.
40:55 I saw a lot of skill in here from both fighters.
40:57 You know, Bonet was a sneaky guy.
41:01 You know, he had subtle movement from the outside,
41:03 followed up with combinations.
41:05 You know, Santillan showing heart.
41:06 He switched up his game plan.
41:08 It was going back and forth.
41:09 I saw Santillan box a little bit more
41:11 for the first time and sometimes.
41:13 And usually he's coming forward, being aggressive,
41:15 but he couldn't do that with Bonet.
41:18 He had to do a little bit of everything tonight.
41:21 And I don't know who won this fight.
41:23 I'm not sure who won this fight.
41:24 And I don't know how the judges scored the fight.
41:26 What'd you score that last round?
41:27 Who'd you give that to?
41:28 I scored it to Santillan, and that gave me a draw.
41:30 And when we look at the punch stats,
41:33 both guys combined to throw 1,200 punches pretty much.
41:36 And Bonet outlanded him, 224 to 213.
41:40 And more importantly, on the power edge, 190 to 152
41:46 in favor of Eric Bonet.
41:48 So Santillan going uphill tonight against Eric Bonet.
41:53 We'll see how the judges saw it.
41:56 A lot of times the judges like aggressiveness.
41:59 Others like the effectiveness.
42:01 So did they like Giovanni Santillan's aggressiveness
42:03 or the fact that Bonet was able to counter everything he had?
42:07 Well, Mark Chinook is the only man who knows.
42:10 Ladies and gentlemen, after 10 rounds here inside Fire Lake
42:13 Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma, we go to the judges' scorecards
42:17 for the official decision.
42:20 Mike Bauer scores the bout 97-92.
42:24 Chris Ritter scores it 98-92.
42:28 And Gerald Ritter scores it 97-93.
42:32 All in favor of your winner by unanimous decision,
42:37 Giovanni "Gaio de Oro" Santillan.
42:43 Good fight.
42:45 Great fight.
42:46 He got away with one, too.
42:48 Listen to me, man.
42:49 That fight was close.
42:50 It was.
42:51 It was close in my opinion.
42:52 It could have went either way.
42:53 But Santillan got the nod.
42:54 Maybe those last two rounds, he did enough to close the show,
42:58 which is good.
