00:00 Another extraordinary chapter in this amazing career unfolds before our very eyes.
00:06 At altitude, in the snow of the Giro d'Italia, Pagaca is incomparable.
00:13 The day after the rest day and terrible weather in the mountains meant the shortening of stage 16.
00:27 Just 118.4km in the end, after prolonged discussions at the start line in Lavinio,
00:33 it was decided that there was no way that they could take the race over the Umbra Pass.
00:37 As a result then, the riders, including Tadej Pagaca, got in the cars and drove all the way down to a start at Lhasa,
00:44 with 118.4km predominantly downhill until the last 35km.
00:51 The flag dropped and the attacks got underway.
00:54 A good day for a breakaway perhaps, a group of 6 or 7 riders,
00:59 and then eventually 4 riders, Andrea Piccolo, Julian Alaphilippe, with Mirko Maestri once more and Davide Ballerini.
01:05 But they were kept on a tight leash by Movistar, who continued to ride all the way to the foot of the climb.
01:12 They went through the first of the bonus sprints at Bolzano all together,
01:18 and then they hit the climb.
01:20 The breakaway started to crack in two, Julian Alaphilippe and Mirko Maestri dropping Davide Ballerini and Andrea Piccolo,
01:26 Ballerini battling on to remain in contention.
01:29 As Mirko Maestri dropped away, Ballerini went past the Italian from Polticometa,
01:34 but Julian Alaphilippe was on his own on the front.
01:38 Still, Movistar were riding,
01:41 as Julian Alaphilippe swept up the Intergiro.
01:47 Behind, a group of counter attackers got across to Mirko Maestri and to Davide Ballerini.
01:53 Andrea Pietrobon and Ballerini briefly went off in pursuit of the lone attacker Julian Alaphilippe,
01:58 who went through the final bonus sprint with a shrinking advantage,
02:02 as Nairo Quintana tried to set things up for Aino Rubio behind.
02:06 Romain Bardet succumbed to the pressure on the climb, but would battle on,
02:10 as Ewan Costieur and Peleo Sanchez attacked with Christian Scarroni trying to get across.
02:16 Julian Alaphilippe, bit by bit though, was being reeled in.
02:19 And on the final climb of the day, Julian Alaphilippe would have a slender advantage heading to the final climb.
02:26 He went over the Passo Pinea in first place,
02:29 but with only 17 seconds to a group of riders behind, chasing hard,
02:34 and 47 seconds to the Maglia Rosa.
02:38 Still being led by Movistar.
02:41 Giulia Pellizzari counterattacked with Christian Scarroni, and they got across to Julian Alaphilippe and Ewan Costieur.
02:46 That was the front of the race, as Bardet still battled on to limit his losses on the final Cat 2 climb of the stage.
02:54 Julian Alaphilippe then trying to get this group moving together,
02:57 but eventually paying for the efforts that he had put in, and he dropped away,
03:01 as Costieur and Pellizzari went clear, and then Pellizzari attacked the Frenchman with 1.5km to go.
03:07 But, the attack came from behind, from Tadej Pogacar, set up by his team and benefiting from the work that Movistar had done.
03:15 The Maglia Rosa went off one by one, picking off the remaining riders from the original breakaway,
03:20 and with 700 agonising metres to go, he drew alongside Giulia Pellizzari,
03:25 and without even a look across to the 20 year old Italian from BF Group Bardiani,
03:29 got on the front, and then dropped Pellizzari.
03:35 Unless something astonishing happens, the Giro d'Italia from 2024 will have one man's name written all over it,
03:42 when the history books are read in the years to come.
03:46 This is the Pogacar Giro d'Italia. He counts them up, he's nearly lost count.
03:51 It is number 5 for Pogacar, and counting.

04:31 Tadej Pogacar then, congratulating the man who finished in second place,
04:47 but he takes another winner's medal at this Giro d'Italia.
04:53 Pellizzari the best of the rest, Dani Martinez finishing in third place ahead of Cristian Scaroni.
04:58 And Martinez is the only real mover in the general classification,
05:03 going above Geraint Thomas and into second place by 22 seconds.
05:08 He continues, Jonathan Milan to hold a massive lead in the Maglia Ciclamino,
05:13 and Tadej Pogacar essentially put to bed any hope that anyone will wrestle this blue jersey from him in the stages that remain.
05:22 The white jersey, however, is close. Antonio Tiberi put a little bit more time into his nearest rival today, Tiemann Arndtman.
05:28 That one may go to the wire.
