00:00 and we'll see you next week.
00:05 Joe, thank you so much for taking the time
00:07 to join us here on this Tuesday.
00:09 - Thanks for having me, you guys.
00:10 Excited to break down these games
00:12 and what we saw last night.
00:13 I tell you, as a Calgary fan,
00:15 not the outcome I wanted.
00:17 - No, certainly not,
00:19 but a Canadian team still in the hunt for the cup.
00:22 Does that mean anything to Joe Maddon?
00:24 We will discuss in just a moment,
00:27 but it was the final two Canadian teams
00:29 in the National Hockey League postseason
00:31 facing off last night in a winner-take-all game seven.
00:35 And Joe, as the story has been in this series,
00:38 decided by simply one goal.
00:40 Edmonton wins in Vancouver,
00:43 three to two over the Canucks,
00:44 but it was anything but easy.
00:47 Three goals in the third for the Oilers.
00:49 The Canucks scored twice
00:50 in the final nine minutes of regulation,
00:52 and then it was a mad fury to the very end.
00:57 How will you look back on this seven game set
00:59 between these two Canadian foes?
01:02 - Well, firstly, I wanna say the Vancouver Canucks
01:04 played an incredible season and series here
01:07 versus the Edmonton Oilers,
01:09 but it really came down to the fact
01:11 that Edmonton came out so strong
01:13 and so committed to playing that defense.
01:15 That's something that Edmonton hasn't been known for.
01:17 They haven't had that strength,
01:19 and they did give Stuart Skinner that support in net.
01:21 They also did phenomenally strong on the kill,
01:24 and that was what ultimately got them the win in this game.
01:28 They were able to convert on the power play as well.
01:31 They went one for two on the power play,
01:33 and they killed off a four-minute penalty out there.
01:36 Vancouver was high-sticked.
01:38 Elias Pettersson got the high stick out there,
01:41 and they went on that power play for four minutes.
01:43 They weren't able to get anything done.
01:45 You guys, they weren't even able to record a shot on goal.
01:48 The defense for Edmonton getting those blocked shots,
01:50 stepping in front of the net of Stuart Skinner
01:53 was pivotal for them to be able to take that series.
01:56 If Edmonton had just relied on their team
01:58 offensively in that one,
02:00 like we saw in the one game of the series
02:02 where Connor McDavid and Leon Drysdale
02:04 both got six points apiece,
02:05 they wouldn't have got past Vancouver,
02:07 but because they committed to that defensive play,
02:10 they're sitting here,
02:11 and they're gonna move on to take on the Dallas Stars.
02:13 I have to tip my hat to Edmonton.
02:15 Not the way I wanted to see it,
02:16 but it is great to see a Canadian team
02:18 making it into the conference finals here.
02:22 - I'll tell you what's interesting about this, too.
02:23 You sort of equate it sometimes
02:24 to other sports show at the NBA,
02:26 where you can get a game seven
02:27 and have a guy like Anthony Edwards
02:28 of the Minnesota Timberwolves not play all that well.
02:30 Now, I'm not saying Connor McDavid didn't play well,
02:32 but you also take a look at Leon Drysdale.
02:34 Only one point combined between both of those players,
02:36 and they won on the road in a game number seven.
02:39 If we just take a quick look at Edmonton moving forward here,
02:42 is there a lot of support for Edmonton?
02:44 Do you think they are the best team
02:46 in the Western Conference and how that winds up?
02:49 - I really don't think they're the best team
02:50 because you look at the Dallas Stars
02:52 and you look at their depth.
02:53 This is something I've always questioned
02:55 for the Edmonton Oilers, and they did bench, actually,
02:57 Corey Perry for the last two games.
02:59 He wasn't out there.
03:00 It's not official that it was benched,
03:02 but in my opinion, it was.
03:03 We did get that secondary scoring in that last game
03:06 and in the game before,
03:07 which is something Edmonton hasn't been able to do
03:11 in the first round and the first couple of this series.
03:14 We were getting the main impact here
03:16 from Connor McDavid and Leon Drysdale.
03:17 So we're seeing a little bit more of their depth out there.
03:20 We're seeing those back checks and forechecks
03:22 out of that top line.
03:24 So they need to continue to play that way
03:26 because the Dallas Stars, their depth is so elite.
03:29 They have score,
03:31 or people who are able to score across the board
03:35 out there for Dallas,
03:36 and they have the stronger goaltender.
03:38 So there's gonna be struggles with them and Edmonton.
03:42 If Edmonton doesn't play that defensive battle,
03:45 Dallas is going to pick apart Stuart Skinner.
