00:00At 11 o'clock on Monday, sirens rang out across Israel to mark Memorial Day, and the Prime
00:09Minister laid a wreath in Jerusalem in honour of the country's fallen soldiers and victims
00:14of terrorist acts.
00:20We are determined to win in this struggle.
00:22We have and we will continue to extract a high price from the enemy for their atrocities.
00:27We will achieve the goals of victory and at the centre of them is the return of our hostages
00:31home.
00:32A victory that with God's help will guarantee our existence and our future.
00:41But after Hamas killed 1,200 Israelis on the 7th of October, after what is widely considered
00:47a colossal national security failure, and hundreds more soldiers died in the ensuing
00:52war that has failed to bring home the remaining 132 hostages, government representatives have
00:58been met with anger at ceremonies across the country.
01:01At Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, families walked out of the military ceremony en masse during
01:06the Prime Minister's speech, while members of the public clashed with security forces
01:10during hardliner Itamar Ben-Gavir's speech in Ashdod, some shouting insults and leaving
01:15the ceremony.
01:16And protesters blocked the road and held up banners in Tel Aviv on Memorial Day Eve, calling
01:22on the government to strike a truce deal to free the hostages.
01:25I'm here in a hunger strike for eight days now because the government is doing nothing
01:36for the deal with Hamas.
01:39Traditionally Memorial Day gives way to Independence Day on the 14th of May, usually a festive
01:44occasion for Israelis.
01:46This year's official ceremony has been pared down, with no air force fly-by or live audience.
