00:56 Hello, and welcome to "From the South."
01:06 I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:09 We begin with the news.
01:11 The United Nations General Assembly
01:13 has backed a Palestinian bid to become a full United Nations
01:16 member.
01:17 The assembly adopted a resolution on Friday
01:19 with 143 votes in favor and nine against, including
01:23 the US and Israel, while 25 countries abstained.
01:28 This does not give the Palestinians full United
01:31 Nations membership, but recognizes them
01:33 as qualified to join and recommends
01:35 the United Nations Security Council reconsider
01:38 the matter favorably.
01:39 The vote represents a global survey
01:41 of support for the Palestinian bid
01:43 to become a full United Nations member,
01:46 a move that would effectively recognize
01:48 the Palestinian state after the United States vetoed it
01:51 in the United Nations Security Council last month.
01:54 While it does not grant a vote in the body,
01:56 the draft resolution will give the Palestinians
01:59 some additional rights and privileges
02:01 from September 2024, like a seat among the United Nations
02:05 members in the assembly hall.
02:07 There are one million displaced people in Rafa.
02:16 Therefore, any shells targeting Rafa
02:18 will inevitably lead to casualties
02:20 among women and children.
02:21 I hope mediators will find a solution to the Rafa issue
02:24 as Rafa can't take any more suffering.
02:26 It's been a ravaged city for seven months.
02:28 The United Nations Relief and Works Agency
02:34 for Palestine Refugees posted on social media
02:37 as Israeli forces' bombardment intensifies in Rafa,
02:40 force displacement continues.
02:42 UNRWA estimates that around 110,000 people
02:45 have now fled Rafa looking for safety.
02:48 But nowhere is safe in the Gaza Strip,
02:51 and living conditions are appalling.
02:53 The only hope is an immediate ceasefire.
02:55 Dialysis patients from a major hospital in Rafa
03:04 had to be transferred to the Nasser Hospital Center
03:07 nearby Kanjounis in southern Gaza Strip,
03:09 where Israeli ground troops withdrew a month ago.
03:12 Patients and staff at the Abu Jusef al-Najarish Hospital
03:16 were forced to evacuate on Wednesday
03:18 as the Israeli operation in Rafa escalated.
03:21 The hospital was one of the key medical facilities
03:24 that received the injured in the attacks
03:26 in the southern city of Gaza.
03:28 So far, the constant Israeli attacks
03:30 have closed almost all medical facilities
03:32 in the Besieged Palestinian Enclave.
03:40 We were very fretful the day the Israelis came in.
03:43 They controlled the hospital and we had to evacuate.
03:46 So we started to worry about it, and that happened,
03:48 and we thought about where to go.
03:51 But thank God, Nasser Hospital prepared and arranged
03:53 everything that facilitated our emotional welfare.
03:57 Dr. Atif al-Hod, director of the Nasser Hospital,
04:01 spoke about the damages done to the dialysis unit.
04:06 Today, the dialysis service has stopped completely.
04:09 The result is that patients have no place for dialysis.
04:12 As you all know, the dialysis building
04:14 was completely burned down and cannot be restored
04:17 in a short time.
04:18 So we were forced to create a dialysis department
04:21 with existing capacities using an old desalination plant,
04:25 repairing it and reusing it as much as possible
04:27 for 25 dialysis machines at Nasser Hospital.
04:30 On Friday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency
04:36 for Palestine Refugees, UNRWA, temporarily
04:38 closed its headquarters in East Jerusalem
04:41 after being attacked by Israeli extremists who set fire
04:44 to the perimeter of the facility.
04:46 Addressing the situation, Philip Lazzarini,
04:48 head of the agency, affirmed on social networks
04:51 that the complex was attacked twice,
04:54 describing the event as scandalous
04:56 and stating it posed a serious risk to the staff.
05:00 Lazzarini highlighted that in the last few months,
05:02 the agency's workers have been regularly harassed
05:05 and threatened with firearms.
05:07 The UNRWA executive also stated the headquarters
05:10 will not be reopened until security
05:12 is restored in the area.
05:14 These attacks come after Israeli authorities
05:16 claimed that agency workers were linked to Hamas.
05:19 The US Department of State reported
05:26 that Biden administration is apparently
05:28 concerned about an Israeli military raid in Rafah.
05:34 What the president made clear is that we
05:36 have concerns about a potential military operation in Rafah.
05:40 I don't think that's any secret.
05:42 We've been making those concerns known publicly,
05:44 and we have made those concerns quite clear
05:46 to the government of Israel.
05:47 And as the president noted, there
05:49 are certain types of military assistance
05:51 that we will not make available to Israel for use
05:54 in a campaign in Rafah.
05:57 In the United States, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters
06:00 returned to George Washington University
06:02 following Wednesday rallies, which
06:04 led to evictions and the arrest of 33 participants.
06:07 Earlier on Thursday, the group of students
06:09 stopped in front of the residence
06:11 of the chancellor of the Washington Center
06:13 with banners saying, "We are not leaving,"
06:16 and chanting, "Free Palestine."
06:18 Previously on Wednesday morning, police officers
06:21 suppressed and cleared the camp, having
06:23 arrested 33 ralliers ranging from 18 to 33 years old.
06:28 Almost three weeks after the onset
06:30 of the pro-Palestinian movement at Columbia University,
06:33 protesters continued raising their voices
06:35 in the US and Europe to stop Israel's genocide in Gaza.
06:38 [MUSIC - "UNDER MY FEET"]
06:39 (SINGING) And it's under my feet, under my feet,
06:42 under my feet.
06:44 The conference of rectors of Spanish universities crew
06:47 issued a public statement in which
06:49 rectors of 77 universities conditioned their relations
06:53 with Israeli institutions.
06:55 The higher study centers, between public and private,
06:58 committed themselves to suspend or review
07:00 their relations with Israeli academic institutions
07:03 that do not entirely dissociate themselves
07:05 from the offensive in the Gaza Strip,
07:08 in addition to reaffirming their commitment
07:10 to international humanitarian law.
07:12 The crew, which brings together 50 public and 27
07:15 private institutions, emphasize with the very serious events
07:19 that have occurred in recent months
07:21 inside the Palestinian enclave, explicitly
07:24 supporting the student camps in regions such as Valencia,
07:27 Madrid, and Barcelona.

07:32 -Iran's second round of parliamentary elections
07:38 began Friday to determine the remaining 45 seats
07:41 in the 290-member legislature.
07:44 In this context, voting has started
07:46 in 22 electoral districts of 15 provinces,
07:48 where a total of 90 candidates are competing.
07:51 The first round of the 12 elections
07:54 took place on March 1, and more than 61 million citizens
07:57 were called to the polls.
07:59 Precisely, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,
08:01 the leader of the Islamic Revolution,
08:03 exercised his right to vote at a polling station in Tehran
08:07 and declared that all Iranians who
08:09 want the progress of the nation have
08:11 the duty to participate in the elections
08:13 to make the parliament stronger.
08:14 [AUDIO OUT]
08:17 -The significance of the runoff elections
08:22 is no less important than that of the main elections.
08:25 God willing, our dear people will vote for a full parliament.
08:28 The higher the turnout, the more powerful
08:30 the parliament will be.
08:31 The stronger the parliament is, the more
08:33 it can work for the country.

09:04 -Welcome back.
09:05 Severe weather conditions associated
09:08 to a cold front in Brazil could worsen the situation
09:11 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
09:12 intensifying the heavy rains.
09:14 According to the Brazilian National Meteorological
09:16 Institute, strong blizzards and floods
09:19 are expected again in the region by the coming days.
09:22 The amount of rainfall is bound to increase the water levels
09:26 and could cause new floods in the previously affected areas.
09:29 The Weather Institute also informed
09:31 that the cold front will remain in Rio Grande do Sul
09:34 during the whole weekend, causing instability
09:36 for the population that is still waiting to be evacuated.
09:45 In the face of the catastrophe that has reportedly
09:48 damaged 60,000 homes and left some 327,000 displaced,
09:53 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
09:55 gathered his ministers in Brazil on Thursday
09:58 to discuss public policies and announce the destination
10:00 of some $10 billion to recovery efforts
10:03 in the state of Rio Grande do Sul,
10:05 where day delivery of humanitarian aid
10:07 has intensified in the past days.
10:14 In East Africa, floods and landslides
10:17 caused by heavy rains severely affected Burundi, Kenya,
10:20 Somalia, and Tanzania.
10:21 In this context, the United Nations
10:23 stated that more than 230,000 people have been
10:27 displaced in the last week.
10:28 The report also stated that floods
10:30 have affected more than 630,000 people, and in the meantime,
10:34 there are no official records of death.
10:37 Africa is highly vulnerable to climate change,
10:39 despite contributing only 4% of global greenhouse gas
10:43 emissions.
10:44 Precisely, this continent is facing alternating cycles
10:47 of drought and heavy rains that also worsens the food crisis,
10:51 as studies indicate that if current climate change
10:54 trends continue, crop production in Africa
10:57 will decline by 2.9% by 2030 and 18% by 2050.
11:08 United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres
11:11 on Friday in Kenya praised President William Ruto's
11:14 leadership of the multinational security support
11:16 mission in Haiti.
11:18 During a meeting with the president
11:19 of the African country, the United Nations Secretary
11:22 General expressed his gratitude for the fact
11:25 that African nations will begin deploying troops to Haiti
11:28 at the end of May.
11:30 Meanwhile, Haiti's Presidential Transitional Council
11:32 has also sent an official letter to President Ruto
11:36 requesting the start of the international intervention
11:38 in the nation.

11:42 with a group of African countries
11:44 and the Caribbean community to quickly strengthen
11:47 the security support infrastructure in line
11:50 with Security Council Resolution 2699.
11:57 The presence of foreign military forces in Haiti
11:59 is an issue widely criticized by local and international social
12:03 activists and human rights defenders, who
12:05 claim that the 2004 United Nations mission in Haiti
12:08 left numerous human rights violations.
12:11 On that occasion, the United Nations Security Council
12:14 authorized the deployment of a multinational force
12:16 of 6,700 military personnel, the so-called Blue Helmets,
12:21 in addition to 1,622 civilian police to restore order.
12:26 It is worth noting that the force was
12:28 led by the Brazilian army with 2,366 soldiers and 2,533 police
12:37 officers.
12:38 Among the numerous accusations against the foreign presence
12:40 in Haiti are sexual assaults against women and minors.
12:43 In Panama, the National Scrutiny Board, JNE,
12:52 proclaimed Jose Raul Molina as president-elect of the nation

13:19 in the process of repatriating Panamanians overseas
13:22 and deporting migrants who enter the country
13:25 through the Darien Gap, the jungle border with Colombia.
13:34 We'll initiate, with international assistance,
13:39 a repatriation process with full respect
13:42 for the human rights of all the people who are there,
13:47 so that those there and those who'd like to come
13:50 know that the ones arriving here will be returned
13:52 to their country of origin.

14:05 detained for a period of 10 days during an operative carried out
14:09 by the special team of anti-power persecution
14:12 authorized by the judiciary.
14:14 According to investigations, the President Boluarte's brother
14:17 is accused of being the leader of a criminal organization

14:52 that the head of government of the city, Jorge Macri,
14:55 ruled out the existence of fatalities

15:01 According to that media, around 60 ambulances and two
15:04 helicopters of the emergency medical attention system
15:07 arrived at the scene and a red alert
15:10 was declared in hospitals in the area.

16:19 and prime minister, Success Masra, who obtained 18.53%.
16:24 General Debi Hidno surpassed the 50% of votes
16:27 in favor, a requirement to avoid the call
16:29 for a second round of elections.
16:31 The elections held last Monday, where more than 8 million
16:35 citizens were called to exercise their right to vote,
16:38 put an end to a three-year transition period
16:40 in the country after the death of the late President Idris
16:43 Debi, father of the president-elect.
16:45 In view of this overwhelming victory,
16:54 I am now the elected president of all Chadians.
16:58 I am not only the president of those who voted for me,
17:01 but also the president of those who made other decisions.
17:05 Meanwhile, opposition candidate Success Masra

17:11 who voted in his favor to mobilize peacefully.
17:16 To all Chadians who voted for change, who voted for me,
17:21 I say, mobilize peacefully.

17:31 Witness what you have seen during these elections.
17:35 Publish testimonies, photographs,
17:37 polling station reports, and videos
17:39 that show the magnitude of your victory.
