07:09Namaste.
07:10My name is Phuong Bui, and I am a doctor in Vietnam.
07:26I don't do art, and my family doesn't do art either.
07:32I thought you were a father who teaches his son how to play the zither, but you are a doctor.
07:38I'm sorry, but you only have one son.
07:40Yes, I have one son, Ryan Bui.
07:43But he doesn't want to be a doctor like his parents.
07:46Yes.
07:47He only likes to play the zither.
07:48Yes, I've always loved music since I was a kid.
07:50So you chose this major for yourself, not your family.
07:54Yes.
07:55When I was 8 years old, I learned how to play the violin.
07:59When I was 13, I composed a song for a school festival.

08:40I think Vietnamese music has many beautiful colors.
08:45I especially like playing the zither.
08:50Did you choose to learn how to play the zither, or did your father teach you?
08:56I chose to learn how to play the zither.
08:58When you learn how to play the zither in America, it's very difficult.
09:01Who will teach you? Where can you find a teacher?
09:06First, I learned how to play the zither from Ms. Vo Van Anh.
09:11I met her at the University of the Pacific.
09:16At that time, I taught a class for world music.
09:22I told her that I liked playing the zither and wanted to compose music.
09:29I wanted to be an apprentice for her.
09:32When I was in Fremont, I had to drive 1.5 hours from my house to her house to study.
09:42Were you born in America or in Vietnam?
09:50I was born in America.
09:54I feel like he and his family went to America together.
09:58That's why he has a passion for Vietnamese music.
10:02Few people here know about this.
10:06You guys are in the same field.
10:08At that time, you had to drive 1.5 hours to school.
10:11How many times a week did you go to school?
10:15Who would take you to school?
10:17I went to school twice a month.
10:20Only twice a month?
10:22How many hours did you study?
10:241.5 hours a week.
10:26I studied whenever I had time.

12:19Yes.
12:20I want to pass on Vietnamese music,
12:25such as folk music, Bami,
12:27and foreign musical instruments.
12:29When foreigners want to play Vietnamese music,
12:34they have to ask a Vietnamese composer to write it down.
12:40They can play it on a violin, salon, bass,
12:45trumpet, trombone, trompe-l'oeil, or trompe-l'oeil.
12:51They can write down the musical notes.
