I have been asked why I keep talking up the Navy.
The answer is simple: It was my home for 21 years.
As an immigrant from Jamaica, I was somewhat lost and confused about what I would do after High School.
I was told that joining the Navy was one of the fastest ways to become a US citizen.
Being a US citizen was not my primary concern, but I did want an education.
I was also told that the Navy attracted people with a strong desire to learn.
When I joined the Navy in 1964, there were 64 different jobs. The education you received related to your job depended on your intelligence.
I wanted to be a Photographer because I was a pacifist.
The Navy granted me my wish.
I was given as many schools as I could handle.
Here's the thing about the Navy: One person has to be qualified to handle many different disciplines because there's only so much space on a ship.
The more jobs you are qualified to perform adequately, the more valuable you are to the Navy.
In my mind, it was all fun!!!
Seeing the world at the Navy's expense, was a huge plus.
Would I recommend the Navy to High School students who are not sure what they want to do?
Yes. A resounding yes.
