When Lamborghini first introduced the Urus SUV, critics and pundits were skeptical. It was seen more as a trend than a legitimate performance car. Little did they know how popular this sporty, compact V8-powered SUV with 657 hp would prove: After just six years, in 2023 it accounted for 60% of Lamborghini’s sales, selling more than 6,000 units.

Last week, Lamborghini introduced a redesign of the Urus that’s intended to continue the trend. The redesigned Urus is designated “SE:” “S” indicates the S trim of the SUV and “E” designates the addition of a plug-in electric power train. The idea behind this technology is to boost the performance of the gas engine with a jolt of electricity.

The Urus SE plug-in hybrid electric adds a 25.9 kWh electric system to the V8 engine of the S model, taking the SUV’s horsepower from 657 to 789. And its $258,000 starting price is about a $23,000 premium over the S model.

00:03 We're one of the first ever to see the Lamborghini Urus
00:11 SE, which is a plug-in electric hybrid.
00:14 It was just introduced last week at the Beijing Auto Show.
00:18 And it now has made its way to New York.
00:21 And we're among the first to climb inside and get
00:23 a look around.
00:28 Super SUVs are SUVs that are super powered.
00:31 They are built for the track.
00:33 They have probably three second or so, 0 to 60,
00:37 and something approaching 800 or more horsepower.
00:42 But they have the spirit and the DNA of a track car,
00:45 but also the daily function of an SUV.
00:47 Lamborghini introduced the Urus after much popularity
00:51 of its sports cars.
00:53 Consumers wanted an SUV.
00:55 So owner Volkswagen built on the platform of the Porsche Cayenne
01:00 and the Audi Q8 to turn the Lamborghini brand into an SUV.
01:06 The Lamborghini Urus SE is the most powerful Urus
01:13 that the company has built. It builds on the S model, which
01:16 was the most powerful, adding E for electric,
01:20 with a plug-in electric hybrid powertrain.
01:23 It adds a 25.7 kilowatt battery and motor,
01:27 but it also adds the plug-in capability.
01:30 So you can plug it in for about 35 or so
01:33 all-electric driving miles.
01:35 If you plug in it every day, you can drive 35 miles
01:37 in electric.
01:38 But that's not the point about this car.
01:40 The point is adding all of this extra power.
01:43 It gets it almost to 800 horsepower.
01:46 789, they say in the United States, 800,
01:49 they say in Europe, depending on how you calculate that number.
01:53 Either way, it's the most powerful Lamborghini
01:55 that they built in the Urus model.
01:58 There's been a lot of redesign in the Urus
02:00 for this particular model.
02:02 And that starts with a much larger display screen.
02:05 It's a big SUV, and there's a lot of space on the dashboard.
02:09 Below that is the same display that we had before.
02:12 It's new software, so it will look and feel
02:15 a little different than the last model, but not a lot.
02:18 And it's a smaller, about a 10-inch display.
02:21 And that's where you're going to find a lot of the controls
02:24 and climate and things like that.
02:26 It does have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and all the things
02:29 that we're used to seeing in our cars.
02:32 What hasn't changed is the way you start and drive this car.
02:36 That is all pure Lamborghini.
02:37 So the beauty of a car like this is you can drive it every day.
02:45 You can drive it fast on the track on the weekends.
02:48 You can take it up to the mountains and the twisty roads.
02:50 You can drive it off-road if you want.
02:53 So there are 11 drive modes.
02:54 It all makes total sense.
02:56 So if you start with the original Lamborghini,
02:58 there is Strada, which means street.
03:01 There's Sport, which of course means sport.
03:03 Corso, which means course or track.
03:06 And then when it comes to the electrified motor,
03:08 there is the Hybrid, which gives you
03:10 the gas and electric power for whatever drive
03:14 mode you've selected.
03:15 Recharge, which is going to hold the battery power
03:17 and not use the battery power at all.
03:20 And then there is Performance.
03:22 So this is going to maximize the electric output
03:25 with your track setting here.
03:27 And then if you add to that the off-road modes, which
03:30 is Terra for off-road, Neva for snow, and Sapia for sand,
03:36 those are the modes that are designed for off-road.
03:39 How will people use it?
03:40 They're going to have fun with it,
03:42 but they're also going to drive it every day.
03:44 If you buy something this beautiful,
03:45 you should drive it every day.
03:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
03:51 The Urus SE isn't just the newest Lamborghini.
03:54 It's also the one with the biggest opening price tag.
03:57 It starts at about $258,000, and that's about a $25,000 bump
04:03 from the Urus S.
04:05 The Lamborghini Urus was a little controversial
04:07 when it was first introduced.
04:08 Purists said, how can a Lamborghini be an SUV?
04:12 But since then, it's become Lamborghini's bestseller.
04:14 And in fact, last year, the Urus represented 60%
04:19 of Lamborghini sales.
04:20 That was more than 6,000 units.
04:22 So people who really want the SE can get their orders.
04:25 And now, delivery should start by the end of the year.
04:28 We're going to start seeing this one on the road really quickly.
