2020 NFL Draft Chargers Select Jusin Herbert in First Round

The Chargers selected Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

00:07 For more, I'm joined by the MMQB's Albert Breer and our Chargers reporter Jason Hirshhorn.

00:13 Albert, what's your reaction to the pick?

00:15 Well, you know, clearly the Chargers had to do something at the quarterback position.

00:20 There was some feeling out there that they might go tackle here.

00:23 I think part of the issue the Chargers have is their roster is pretty good.

00:28 And so when were they going to be in position to find their next guy?

00:31 I don't think when you've got a roster that's got guys like Joey Bosa and Derwin James and Melvin Ingram

00:37 and Casey Hayward and Mike Williams and Keenan Allen on it,

00:40 that you can really count on being in position to draft a quarterback again.

00:44 It's not like they were going to be in position to take Trevor Lawrence next year.

00:48 So I think the new general manager, or the general manager there, Tom Telesco, the head coach Anthony Lynn,

00:53 saw a rare opportunity to be in position to draft a franchise quarterback.

00:57 They move on from their old quarterback Phillip Rivers, and now Justin Herbert will be the guy they build around.

01:03 Jason, did the selection by the Dolphins make this easier for the Chargers?

01:09 I'm not sure that it actually made as much of a difference as it might appear on paper.

01:13 General manager Tom Telesco made a point that durability was something that the team was really focused on

01:19 in terms of the evaluation process, and that necessarily affects the evaluation of Tua Tungvaluwa.

01:25 So Justin Herbert, who is certainly rarer than those prospects, but does have a lot of physical tools

01:31 that the team definitely covets at the position, probably made more sense for them at the position.

01:36 There you have it. Herbert replacing Phillip Rivers with the Chargers at quarterback.
