00:00 Hello there, I'm Fernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated. I cover the Chargers.
00:03 Very surprising today, opening kickoff happens, Justin Herbert comes out as a
00:09 starter and everybody turns around looks at themselves and they're like, "Oh my god
00:12 what's going on?" Well, what basically happened was during warm-ups, regular
00:17 starter Tyrod Taylor was feeling some chest pain so Anthony Lynn told us after
00:21 the game that he went to the hospital and that he had no information so most
00:26 likely we'll receive some information about Tyrod tomorrow. But Justin
00:31 Herbert showed some good things, led his team right after the opening kickoff, led
00:36 them to a four-yard touchdown which he ran in. A couple of drives later throws
00:40 a touchdown, his first career touchdown and rushing touchdown in the first half.
00:45 And then in the second half you saw a little bit of those rookie mistakes that
00:49 he was making. He decided in one of those plays he rolls out to his left and he
00:56 had Keenan Allen wide open or he had Keenan Allen open and instead of taking
01:01 off running which he could have had a first down he decides to throw it across
01:04 his body to Keenan. The play's intercepted or the ball's intercepted and the
01:08 Chiefs ran down the or came down the field and were able to score. The defense
01:13 did a great job on Mahomes for the first three quarters. Right
01:18 around that Herbert interception is kind of where the offense are picking up
01:21 momentum. Patrick Mahomes was just doing what he does, making plays all over the
01:26 field. Late in the game the Chargers had a chance at the four-yard line to
01:32 basically put the game away and or put the game score the touchdown and
01:38 basically make it harder for the Chiefs to come back but they stalled and
01:42 Michael Badgley hit the field goal to tie the game up. After the or then the
01:48 Chiefs come up tie up the game and then in overtime the Chargers had the ball to
01:52 begin the overtime and three bad or two bad play calls by the by the Chargers
01:59 didn't result in any yards. They punted it to the Chiefs. Chiefs hit a 58 yarder to
02:03 win the game. So yeah I know overall it was a it was a good game for Herbert to
02:09 kind of see what he had to see what then for the Chargers to see what he has and
02:14 build off of those mistakes that's what Herbert said after the game I'm gonna
02:18 build off of these mistakes which is something that you want to hear in a
02:20 rookie. Lynn didn't say if Herbert is their starter now because he wants to
02:24 see how the health is of a starting quarterback and Tyrod Taylor so tomorrow
02:30 is media will have media availability with Lynn. He should tell us a little bit
02:34 more about Tyrod's injury and what's going on with him. Lynn mentioned in his
02:38 press conference that he told Justin Herbert five or ten seconds before the
02:42 game started that he was in and that Herbert looked at him a little bit
02:45 surprised and was like okay well let's go do this thing. Overall pretty
02:50 impressive game from the rookie quarterback some mistakes that he needs
02:53 to clean up but overall his teammates are very impressed by him and they said
02:57 that they have confidence going in the next weekend if Tyrod Taylor
03:02 cannot go. The Chargers are now one and one. They welcome the Carolina Panthers
03:06 next weekend at SoFi Stadium so it'll be interesting to see a Teddy Bridgewater
03:11 and Christian McCaffrey led offense. For more leading up to that weekend keep it
03:16 here for more content. I'm Fernando Ramirez for Sports Illustrated.
