00:00 The touchback rule in the NFL, which came into play
00:03 in the Browns' loss to the Chiefs,
00:05 was called by a lot of people
00:06 as the stupidest rule in football.
00:09 But what is actually the worst rule in all of sports?
00:11 For more, I'm here now with Ben Pickman.
00:13 Ben, first of all, I don't hate the touchback rule,
00:15 personally, I'm not sure it's the logical conclusion there
00:19 for it to be a touchback,
00:20 but I like it being a high leverage situation there,
00:23 and don't fumble the ball.
00:24 But for me, I'm gonna go with two rules
00:26 that irritate me as a viewer.
00:28 One is fouling out in the NBA.
00:30 Like, I don't wanna see superstars off the court,
00:33 so when they pick up two fouls early, they gotta sit down.
00:35 That's nonsense.
00:36 And the other is stopping the clock
00:38 after a first down in college football.
00:41 You know, even if it's just for a bit,
00:43 it makes college football games last forever.
00:46 So those are my, you know, most problematic rules,
00:49 at least as a consumer of sports products.
00:51 What's yours?
00:53 - I'm gonna go on a much smaller scale
00:55 on rules you don't often see.
00:56 It's in the NBA, one of the strangest
00:58 is that a free throw, you have to attempt it
01:00 within 10 seconds, or it is a violation.
01:03 You would think for points that are seemingly unhinged
01:05 and that you get free attempts without any defense
01:07 that you could take as long as you want
01:09 or more than, say, 10 seconds.
01:11 But this is a rule we never see called,
01:13 and so that's why it doesn't really come up,
01:14 but it is certainly a strange one.
01:16 But I have to go in the honorable mention category
01:18 of a rule that is no longer exists,
01:20 and that's to college basketball,
01:22 where for a while, there was a rule
01:23 that you couldn't dunk in pregame warmups,
01:25 and that would be a technical foul,
01:27 and that rule is no longer, was gotten rid of
01:29 in the last couple years,
01:29 but that is certainly a strange one.
01:31 And it even goes back to college basketball's history,
01:33 which for a while, between the late '60s and early '70s,
01:36 even outlawed the slam dunk.
01:37 So that certainly would be the least popular rule
01:40 if it existed today, but it's long gone,
01:42 so it's no matter, no debate anymore on that.
01:45 - Well, what do you wanna see guys be able to meditate
01:47 at the free throw line?
01:48 - You know, just let them take their time.
01:53 It is a free throw.
01:54 You should be able to collect your breath,
01:55 and if you need to dribble a gazillion times,
01:57 like say Rip Hamilton did,
01:59 or say you have to control the basketball
02:01 and then tie your shoe, I don't know what could happen,
02:03 but I don't know, to inflict and restrict
02:06 how long you can hold the basketball on a free throw
02:08 seems pretty silly to me.
02:10 - What about the touchback rule in the NFL?
02:11 Are you with me that you don't hate it,
02:12 or are you with the crowd and you do?
02:15 - I mean, I get why it was called.
02:17 Certainly the rule was enforced the right way on Sunday,
02:19 but I am more with the crowd on this one than you, Robin.
02:21 I definitely understand all the frustration
02:23 of why people dislike the rule and the logic behind that.
02:27 So I kind of disagree, and I think it is a rule
02:29 that kinda needs to change going forward.
02:31 (silence)
