00:00Well, winter's starting to draw in very fast now, it's getting very cold and damp, especially
00:10in the morning, so maybe it's about time to put the superbike away for a couple of months,
00:14keep it nice and clean and shiny.
00:16And if you do that, what's your alternative?
00:18You could use a car, of course, but then you'll be stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway all
00:22day, not a lot of fun.
00:24You could, of course, use a little scooter.
00:25Well, the trouble with little scooters is, well, they're little, aren't they?
00:29And if you do use a motorway, you'll struggle to keep up with the rest of the traffic.
00:33So we need a big scooter.
00:34Well, here is a very big scooter, Suzuki's Bergman, all 400cc's of it.
00:41Well, if you want to split hairs, it's actually only 385cc's.
00:47But it was the first of the new breed of larger capacity scooters, aimed at eliminating the
00:53problems of the smaller machines, which can often feel underpowered with their little
00:56two-stroke motors.
00:59Having ridden the Bergman around for a few days, I've noticed that more people ask the
01:03question, what's it really like, than they've ever done when I've turned up on some fancy
01:08sports bike.
01:09It seems to me that bikers are genuinely intrigued and interested to learn more about this machine.
01:15They want to borrow it and try it out.
01:18Those that do, usually return with a smile on their face, and then agree, if somewhat
01:23reluctantly, that it's actually rather good.
01:26Just about the ultimate rev and go.
01:28Well, there's not a great deal to look at mechanically on a Bergman, because it's just
01:33one huge lump of plastic.
01:34And it is huge as well.
01:35It's physically quite a big machine.
01:37But despite that, the height of the seat is definitely worth a mention.
01:40Look at that.
01:41Look how low to the ground it is.
01:43Now, that can be a problem on even the smallest of scooters, little 50cc scooters.
01:47Just because they've got a small engine, doesn't mean they've got a low seat height.
01:50Some of them are actually quite tall.
01:52But on this, despite its large capacity and big physical size, no such problem.
01:57So short riders, no trouble at all.
01:59If I just pop it onto its main stand, we can just have a closer look at the actual brakes
02:04on it, because they're definitely worth a mention.
02:06At the front here, you'll see there's two hoses there going to this caliper for the
02:10front disc.
02:11And it's disc brakes, front and rear, on this one.
02:14And the reason there's two hoses is because it's got a linked brake system, which means
02:18when you pull this left-hand lever on the handlebars here, it brakes the back as normal,
02:23but it also brakes the front.
02:25So that brakes back and front.
02:26And this one over here just brakes the front.
02:29Linked brakes.
02:30Very, very clever.
02:31As I say, you can't see anything mechanically on this, but under there is the engine.
02:35400cc, single-cylinder, water-cooled engine.
02:38And it actually lies flat, sort of along the chassis, really.
02:41The cylinder goes that way.
02:43If I were to take the bodywork off, you'd see what I was talking about.
02:45But it goes that way, which means the piston's going up and down along the length of the
02:49bike.
02:50That helps to keep the weight down, and it also means that you've got more space under
02:53your seat, because you've not got a cylinder stuck up there, taking all the room up.
02:57And under the seat, there's actually quite a bit of room.
03:00It opens up that way, supported on this strut here, and as you can see, a full-face helmet
03:05in there.
03:06No problem.
03:07It has to go that way.
03:08You can't put it that way, because it won't shut, but if you put it that way, it'll shut
03:12quite easily.
03:14Plenty of room in there.
03:16Also helping to keep the weight down, and keep the weight low, should I say, not so
03:20much down, but low, is the petrol tank, which is there.
03:23Fill the caps there, and the petrol tank is beneath there, so again, lots and lots of
03:27weight low down.
03:28Moving up here, look at this here.
03:30This is a brake lock, because you've got a problem on a scooter, because it's automatic.
03:34You can't leave it in gear.
03:36So if you park on an incline, it will roll away.
03:38A normal motorbike, you just leave it in gear.
03:40So this has a brake lock.
03:42Pull that down there, and it puts a little lock, cable-operated, on the back wheel, stops
03:47it rolling away.
03:48So quite a good idea.
03:50Next to that, a funny, strange little arrangement here for the ignition.
03:53Take your key out, you pop that down, and it covers the ignition hole there, so you
03:58can't put a key in, you can't put a screwdriver in.
04:00So to release that, you use the back of the key, which is shaped there, to match that
04:05little socket there.
04:06Give that a flick, that pops up, and there you go, you stick your key back in, and you're
04:11done.
04:12And onto the dashboard up here.
04:13A nice dashboard on this, with everything you'll need.
04:15Not a lot of warning lights.
04:16There's a warning light for the brake lock, and there's one for the high beam, and that's
04:19it.
04:20But you've got a clock, you've got a digital trip there, two different trips on this, analogue
04:25speedo, fuel gauge, which I always keep saying, every bike should have a fuel gauge and a
04:29temperature gauge.
04:30And that dashboard at night looks really nice, actually.
04:33You won't see this now during the day.
04:34But at night, when you've got your lights on, it's got a lovely, kind of icy blue backlight
04:38to it.
04:39It looks really, really smart.
04:40Very nice.
04:42Up here, then, a big screen.
04:44Not the biggest of screens I've ever seen, but it does actually do a reasonable job.
04:47It keeps the worst of the wind blast off your chest and your neck area.
04:51So it's quite useful.
04:52And that's quite important, because this, remember, might only be a scooter, but it's
04:55400 cc's, and it's capable of cruising at 85 miles an hour plus, all day long.
05:02And that may sound amazing, but it's true.
05:06The top speed is quoted as 97 miles an hour.
05:09But I have to say that anything above 80 should really be reserved for only the very straightest
05:14of roads, because the Bergman does have a tendency to start weaving around at high speed
05:18when things get a little twisty, I think due to a combination of 13 inch wheels and a very
05:24long wheel base.
05:25But of course, you shouldn't be doing those kind of speeds.
05:29That said, it's very difficult to find fault with this machine.
05:33Perhaps its big problem lies with its image, or lack of it.
05:37It's often seen as rather uncool to ride around on a scooter, but more and more bikers
05:43are waking up to the idea that these machines are more than capable of doing the job.
05:48I'd say, swallow your pride.
05:50Try one out.
05:51You might just like it.
05:56You know, I really, really do like this Bergman.
05:58I don't mind admitting it.
05:59And I think it's the only scooter, really, at the moment, that's got any real respect
06:03from the bike world, if you like.
06:05But it is, it's very, very comfy.
06:07You could sit on this all day long.
06:09You can put your feet up there, the old feet forward riding position.
06:11You can have your feet down there, big comfy seat.
06:14There's even a backrest there for the rider, so you're not going to get a sore back.
06:19And even the pillion gets little footboards like that.
06:21Look at them.
06:22None of your little foot pegs on this.
06:24And how about that for a pillion seat?
06:26That is the height of luxury, if ever I've seen it there.
06:29Fantastic.
06:30See that?
06:31That's bigger than the whole seat on some of the sports bikes that I've been on.
06:34I mean, that is superb.
06:36And a nice little backrest there for the pillion, so the pillion isn't going to fall off the
06:39back.
06:40You could notice on this one that it's had a little rack fitted.
06:42That's a little aftermarket accessory, because, of course, this is a second-hand machine.
06:46This is done just over 3,000 miles from you.
06:49And if you wanted to buy this one, you could save 1,000 pounds on the new price.
06:53This is on offer at just 3 and 1⁄2 grand.
06:55A brand-new Bergman, now on the road, will cost you 4 and 1⁄2 thousand pounds.
07:00And you know, I'd go anywhere on this.
07:02I think you could go touring on this dead easily, because it's comfortable, it's got
07:05the performance, it'll keep up with everything else on the road, well, apart from your top
07:09superbikes.
07:10It's got the comfort, it's got luggage-carrying capacity, you could put a top box on there,
07:14and if you were on your own, you could strap loads and loads of stuff on this pillion seat
07:18there.
07:19Take anything you needed with you.
07:20I think my next touring holiday could be on a Suzuki Bergman, because, really, this is
07:24all you'll ever need, unless, of course, you've got a mate like mine who happens to own one
07:29of these.
07:31Alan, have you... are we ready?
07:34Now it's time for the first of our tests today, which is going to be this here, GSX 1400.
07:38And I believe you're looking after this one, Paul.
07:40I am indeed, Olly.
07:41It may well be looking after me, because it's a right big bruiser, isn't it?
07:44I can't hear you, you're too far away.
07:46This bike's too big.
07:47It is enormous, isn't it?
07:48But they all are this week.
07:50Blue and white Suzuki, it's got to be, hasn't it?
07:52Only colours.
07:53Only colours for a Suzuki.
07:54And, I mean, that seat, armchair material, if you ask me, that.
07:57It's going to be a very sumptuous ride for you.
07:59I think it is.
08:00The Suzuki GSX 1400 screams good looks, ability and attitude.
08:13It's been around a little while, it's not exactly brand new for this year, but for many
08:16people it's still the muscle bike to own.
08:27It used to be the case, not that many years ago, that any retro-looking bike would be
08:32full of old technology, but nothing could be further from the truth now with these more
08:36modern machines.
08:37This GSX 1400, for example, is packed with the very latest sophistication.
08:42Just a look at the clocks, for example, will tell you that this machine is now high-tech.
08:46We didn't have displays like that on the muscle bikes of the 1970s.
08:50The motor is, of course, now fuel-injected and it features a very clever dual-valve ignition
08:55system, which they say improves throttle response and gives you more MPG.
08:59So Suzuki have done a great job of making a very new engine look very retro.
09:06Despite its enormity, the GSX is really well-mannered and well-balanced on the road.
09:11It weighs 228 kilos, but even so it won't object to being hustled along twisty lanes.
09:19Now I know it's not a major selling point on a bike like this, but it's certainly worth
09:22mentioning this huge cavernous hole under the seat.
09:26Look at that, it's massive.
09:27You don't find that often on bikes these days.
09:28Still got the tools at the back, but there's loads of room there for a lock, set of waterproofs
09:32and maybe a couple of sandwiches for lunch as well, but probably still not big enough
09:35for my wife's handbag.
09:39Speaking of pillions, this is possibly the best bike in the world on which to take someone
09:43for a spin that's never been on a bike before.
09:47I could live with and ride this bike every single day of the year and never ever get
09:53bored.
09:54Okay, it's not got the performance of a modern sports bike, we know that, but it has got
09:57loads and loads of street cred and it's very, very comfortable to ride.
10:02The trouble with retro looking bikes is that some of them are so obviously modern bikes
10:06with chrome bits stuck on here and there just for effect.
10:10That's not so with the GSX.
10:13So it's over to the scoreboard for the GSX 1400.
10:16For styling, 8 out of 10.
10:18Looks the business, but would look better if it still had the old white wheels.
10:24Performance 7 out of 10.
10:25A great smooth engine, but lacking just a little in the mid-range.
10:28Practicality, 7 out of 10.
10:31Very comfortable, could do with a small fairing to remove the worst of the wind.
10:36And value, it's the cheapest bike here, so 8 out of 10.
10:41You enjoy that one then, Paul?
10:42I enjoyed it immensely.
10:43I love this bike, it's great, it's big, it's comfortable, there's loads of power.
10:47To be honest, I expected perhaps a touch more power from such a big thing, perhaps a little
10:52bit...
10:53It's slightly flat in the middle for something so big.
10:54Just a little bit lacking in the middle, but it's not a real complaint.
10:57I did knock it down a touch on style because I think it looks better with white wheels.
11:00I would agree with you wholeheartedly, they may be a pain to clean, but they do lift it
11:05just that little bit more, don't they?
11:06Yeah, with the blue and white colour scheme it just carries it through, but a very healthy
11:09score.
11:10A very healthy score indeed.
11:11The next challenge will be difficult to beat, I think.
11:13So what are you going for next?
11:14Well, I'm going for something very different.
11:16Right.
11:17So maybe you want something a little different.
11:19Well, you certainly have a problem parking one of them on your drive, but what you'll
11:22see on many people's drives at the moment is a 600cc, because it seems to be the most
11:27popular class, or the middleweights as they're now referred to.
11:30And it's certainly true to say that the average rider can't ride a powerful 900 any faster
11:35than he or she can ride a decent 600.
11:39Well, there's lots to choose from.
11:40Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, you name it, they all do decent 600 sports bikes.
11:45And if it's off-road bikes you like, well, there's KTM, Aprilia, Suzuki, and a few more.
11:50But a popular class these days is the one that they're calling the all-rounder.
11:53And this is the all-rounder that's outsold all its rivals, the Suzuki 600cc Bandit.
12:39What is it with you cameramen and boats?
13:01Just forget the boats today.
13:03Bikes today.
13:04Now, I said it had outsold all its rivals.
13:07Well, that really depends on how you interpret sales figures.
13:09You see, the top-selling bike for many years now has been Honda's brilliant CBR 600.
13:15But unfortunately for Suzuki, the Bandit actually comes in two versions.
13:18There's this version, the naked, unfaired version.
13:21This is the GSF 600.
13:23And then there's the GSF 600S, which is a half-faired version.
13:28And unfortunately, in the sales figures, the sales charts, they're actually classed as
13:31two different models.
13:33But if you add both the figures together, you'll find they absolutely outsell everything
13:36else on the road.
13:38And why?
13:39Well, because it's so damn good at everything.
13:42When it was launched in 1995, a Bandit like this would have cost you just four grand.
13:47And now the price is up to a touch over 4,700 for this version, the naked version, you still
13:52get an awful lot of excitement for your money.
13:55And if you want the half-faired version, that'll cost you around about an extra 300 quid to
13:59touch over five grand on the road.
14:01So what do you get for your 4,700?
14:03Well, you get the same engine that Suzuki used in their RF600 sports bike, slightly
14:07detuned, but still not a bad performer, capable of delivering around 78 brake horsepower.
14:13And it'll take you to a top speed in excess of 125 miles per hour.
14:16Although, if you're planning on going anywhere near that for more than a few miles, you really
14:20need neck muscles like Mike Tyson, or better still, buy the half-faired version.
14:25It's a lot easier to hang on to at high speed.
14:31Well, it's not quite Bandit country, I know, but it's the nearest thing we could find around
14:59here.
15:00It's better than looking at another chuffing boat, isn't it?
15:02On to the real Bandit.
15:03You know, there's nothing that special, really, about the engine, about the brakes, the chassis,
15:08or anything else for that matter.
15:09It's a fairly basic bike, a kind of retro-looking, sort of simple-looking machine.
15:15Just all works so well when it's packaged like this.
15:18You know, when it first came out, the Bandit, people referred to it as a parts bin special.
15:22Can you believe that?
15:23Well, how we live and learn, don't we?
15:25The Bandit's got to be a serious contender for maybe the best value for money of all
15:29time award.
15:31And if you're not turned on by fancy graphics and race replicas and fairings and going fast
15:36and all that, and you still want to have a lot of fun, then maybe this would just fit
15:39the bill.
15:40So, you might be wondering what it's like to ride a Bandit.
15:43Well, it's an awful lot of fun, quite exciting, very, very, very comfy.
15:47You could sit here all day, get no aches and pains at all.
15:51And unlike modern sports bikes, when the engine doesn't really start to deliver its power
15:56until it reaches about 5,000 revs, the Bandit motor delivers the power really cleanly throughout
16:03the rev range, from about 2,000 revs upwards.
16:05It's very, very smooth, a lovely power delivery.
16:09Fast enough for lots of excitement, but not fast enough to really frighten you.
16:14And should the 600 not be powerful enough, the Bandit comes in a 1,200 version as well.
16:19And again, that's available in the two models.
16:21You've got the naked, unfaired like this, and then you've got the half-faired.
16:25And the 1,200 will cost you 6,500 grand unfaired and 6,800 quid or thereabouts with the half-fairing.
16:32And if you're into serious arm-wrenching power and monster wheelies, then the 1,200 is the one.
16:37So next time you're looking at a new bike and you're walking down a line of bikes for
16:40sale, don't walk past the Bandit thinking it's boring, it's plain, it's basic, it's
16:45unexciting.
16:46It's certainly not.
16:47You could do a lot worse.
16:53This is supposed to be summer, and I'm still wearing my big jacket, I can't believe it,
16:57but it will get warmer soon, I believe.
16:59Now what do you see loads of in summer and not very many of the rest of the year?
17:03Morris Minors with nodding dogs on the back shelf, yeah, Ford Mondeos with caravans attached
17:08on all the decent back roads, and of course, loads and loads of bikes.
17:13If you add sunshine and bikes together, for many people, the image is one of open-faced
17:17helmets, sunglasses, high handlebars, and V-twin cruisers, just like this.
17:22A few years ago, buying a cruiser would have meant buying, perhaps, a Harley-Davidson,
17:27or maybe even a Harley-Davidson.
17:29You see, because then there wasn't anything like the choice that's available today.
17:33Now everybody's making them, well, almost.
17:35Certainly Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki all have a dedicated range of cruisers, and
17:41this is just one of the bunch of Suzukis on offer, the VZ800 Marauder.
17:46It's an 805cc, high-compression, V-twin engine, which Suzuki say has been tuned for throttle
17:53response and acceleration.
17:55Single overhead cam, four valves per cylinder, and it's written to be a very efficient engine
18:00because it's got a TSCC cylinder head.
18:03Now that stands for, in case you didn't know, Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber.
18:08Sounds very impressive.
18:09Don't ask me how it's supposed to work, but it sounds good, doesn't it?
18:12Water-cooled, nice, neat radiator there, fits nice and snugly between the front downtubes
18:17of the frame, double-cradle steel frame, five-speed gearbox, chain drive, basic stuff, single
18:23disc on the front, drum brake on the back, nothing fancy, no fancy gizmos, but it does
18:29the job perfectly well.
18:30Remember, it's a cruiser, that means a low seat.
18:42The seat height of an average sports bike is probably something like 830mm, or thereabouts.
18:48The seat on this Marauder is just 700mm from the ground.
18:52Ideal for people with short legs, but not uncomfortable for the rest.
18:56I'm about six foot, and quite honestly, I could sit there all day.
19:03It's not just low, it's also very long, with a wheelbase of 1645mm, it's at least a couple
19:10of hundred longer than your more common sports bike.
19:13You might think that would make it difficult to manoeuvre in a confined space, but it's
19:17actually got a very good lock, and it handles surprisingly well at low speeds.
19:21A low seat helps to keep a low centre of gravity, and it also means you haven't got far to
19:26fall, if the unthinkable should occur.
19:29And while we're on the subject of seats, this one actually comes off dead easy.
19:33Key in there, unlock it, and that comes up like that.
19:36You've got a little storage box there, little being the word, you wouldn't exactly get a
19:40week's shopping in there, but you'd get one or two bits and pieces.
19:44And the other seat, the pillion seat, if you don't fancy taking anybody else for a ride,
19:48a couple of bolts there, one at the back, that comes off, and you've got a nice, trendy
19:52looking single seat cruiser.
19:57Of course, the most striking thing with any custom machine is the vast amounts of chrome.
20:02You've got chromed all sorts, cylinder head covers, engine casings, headlamp, speedo,
20:07you name it.
20:08If it can be chromed, it has been, including this nice staggered exhaust system, looks
20:12really smart.
20:13But I have to say, I think that is probably the biggest letdown of the bike, just doesn't
20:17sound right.
20:18And you'll hear many people say that the Japanese customs look every bit as good, if not better,
20:22sometimes, than a Harley-Davidson, but they just don't sound right, they don't make enough
20:26noise, simply down to personal preference.
20:31The Marauder isn't the fastest thing on two wheels, but it isn't meant to be, and in fact
20:35push it a little bit too hard, and the pegs soon ground out in the corners.
20:40Cruisers are meant to be comfortable, relaxed, easy to ride, and good for posing, and it
20:45does all of those things perfectly well.
20:52The biggest plus for this particular bike is the price, just a touch over £5,000 buys
20:57you all of this chrome, and this is just one of a massive range of Japanese cruisers now
21:02on the market.
21:03They're nice if you can be bothered to keep them clean, I can't, so I'm taking this back
21:07before it rains.
21:22Twelve months ago, to this very day, and on a beautiful day like this, I rode the TL1000S.
21:36You remember this was the bike that people couldn't handle, or at least some couldn't
21:39handle?
21:40Well, things have moved on since then, and now we've got the TL1000R, and this is it,
21:46so what's so new?
21:48The first thing that strikes you on the 1000R is this massive fairing, and an equally massive
21:54headlight.
21:55The S, if you remember, just had the half fairing, and another big difference, which
21:59you can't mistake, is the frame.
22:01This one's got a beam frame, very much like the GSX, whereas the TL1000S had that trellis
22:08frame, and the other distinctive feature is this tail seat unit.
22:13The seat itself is massive and very squidgy, but this part here, which rather looks like
22:19a duck's rear end, to be perfectly honest, in there is a compartment that, in fact, I
22:24reckon you could actually fit your pillion passenger in, let alone on, but you can detach
22:28this and put a seat squab on it.
22:31You do get the seat squab with the bike, so don't worry about that.
22:34But there's more than a style about this bike.
22:36Style is the sort of minor thing, might be a marketing ploy, but this bike was really
22:40designed by Suzuki to be a contender in world superbikes in the future, and so let's look
22:45at the sort of technical parts to this.
22:47It's got Kayaba upside-down forks, Tokiko six-pot brakes, which are absolutely brilliant,
22:54but the trick bits in here, you can actually buy a race kit for this for only 50,000 pounds,
22:59but nevertheless, you can change the rake and change the trail.
23:04You've got replacement yokes you can put in there, you can also put eccentric ball races
23:08top and bottom, so you can tilt the forks backwards and forwards, all very clever stuff.
23:12So you use the basic frame, but then change it from there.
23:15Coming back along here, you can just see one of the twin radiators, the 1000S just had
23:20one radiator, this has got two for extra cooling.
23:24What you can't see in there, the V-twin engine is basically the same, except it's got twin
23:28injectors per cylinder, the old one had just had one.
23:33Coming back through the bike, again, massive swinging arm pivot there.
23:37You've got a familiar rear shock absorber here, you've got the spring units, and then
23:41the infamous rotary damper, which the press actually criticised a lot, but it seems to
23:45work okay to me.
23:47It might be a bit restricted in its movement, but it does work.
23:50But on this one, they've actually got a temperature compensator, would you believe, so when you're
23:54working it hard and the temperature builds up, it opens and closes valves to compensate
23:58for the oil getting thinner.
24:00So very clever stuff.
24:02It's all rounded off by some racing Metzeler rubber, which makes it stick to the road like
24:06the old proverbial glue.
24:11But don't get the impression that you have to make this a race bike, because it's very
24:14cool as it is.
24:16Both control levers are fully adjustable for hand span, nice little thumb wheel there.
24:21All the controls are very neat, that we've come to expect from Japanese bikes anyway.
24:26The forks, as you can see, are fully adjustable for preload and rebound, so no problem there.
24:32It's got a steering damper on, which is hardly necessary in my opinion, but it's a non-adjustable
24:36one, so you're stuck with the amount of damping that we've got, but no real problems with
24:40that.
24:41The little dash panel itself is quite neat, very simple as you can see, but it has got
24:46a couple of digital displays.
24:50On the right is temperature, and on the left is mileage, but not only have you got the
24:55fixed mileage, you've also got a little trip recorder with a press of the button there.
25:01There we go, giving running one and total trip.
25:06Really neat, all works very well.
25:09Now obviously there's a good reason for this frame, and as I said earlier, it's not all
25:12style.
25:13This is a much stronger frame to put up with the rigours of world superbike racing.
25:17Not only that, they've shortened the wheelbase to make it a very compact bike.
25:21It's the same length as the Yamaha One.
25:23It weighs a bit more, but it's the same overall length.
25:26Not only that, they've cleverly shifted the weight forward in any way that they can to
25:30keep that front end down, and by golly do you need to keep that front end down.
25:34And the battery, they've shoved right up at the front, runs alongside the engine, just
25:39behind one of the radiators.
25:42Well that's the hardware, but what you really want to know is how it goes in real life.
25:51This is the V-Twin that thinks it's a four.
25:54You can hear it's a twin, you can just about feel it's a twin, but performance wise there
25:58are no big bangs.
25:59It's super smooth, really revvable, but tractable and very flexible too.
26:04It's got power on top from tick over to a tonne 70 with 135 brake there for the asking.
26:10Ten more than even an SPS, but it just doesn't feel like it.
26:14Having said that, the extra injectors are not there for ornament.
26:17Gun it away and the front wheel says goodbye to the tarmac.
26:20Hook it up through the slick 6-speed box and you'll see 12,000 revs before you know it.
26:26Road holding is also good, but on rough roads the rear shock travel felt limited.
26:30It didn't cause any problems, it just didn't feel very compliant.
26:34The brakes are excellent.
26:35The Tokiko 6-box up front are, to be honest, all you need to control this 197 kilos of
26:41Japanese hardware.
26:43For 8,299 on the road, you have a super bike, all right.
26:47Add 50k for the full race kit and you'll have yourself a true super bike, as in world super
26:53bike.
26:57Okay, so if I said name the bike, you'd say GSX-R, but which GSX-R?
27:08You'd have a 50-50 chance of being right.
27:10It could be a 600, it could be a 750, and while I'm stood in the way of this badge on
27:14the back, you'd really never know.
27:17The 750, for a number of years, has been at the top of many people's shopping lists when
27:21looking for a high-performance sports machine, but more and more people are now moving down
27:25a bracket to the 600 class, and it's fair to say that Suzuki have never really had a
27:30serious contender.
27:31That was until 1997, when they released this, the GSX-R 600.
28:00It really is very similar to the 750 in many ways.
28:03This twin-spar aluminium frame is, in fact, exactly the same.
28:07The swingarm, however, is different, hasn't got the big brace across it that you'll find
28:10on the bigger bike, and it means the whole geometry is different and gives it a shorter
28:14wheelbase.
28:15In fact, the shortest wheelbase of any of the 600cc sports class.
28:20Front suspension is different.
28:21Here, we've got 45mm shower suspension, adjustable for rebound and preload, and at the back,
28:27everything you'd expect to find on a high-performance machine.
28:30Monoshock with remote reservoir, and that's fully adjustable for preload, rebound damping
28:34and compression.
28:36And if you can't find something to suit you, the way you ride in that lot, then quite frankly,
28:40I should give up.
28:41Perhaps the most striking similarity is, of course, the distinctive GSX-R shape and the
28:46bodywork.
28:47It is, believe it or not, exactly the same.
28:50So how does it all work?
28:51Well, the short answer is very, very well.
28:54You've got 600cc of inline four-cylinder, which Suzuki claim produces 104bhp, and it'll
29:00take you to a top speed of 156mph.
29:04The engine is very, very revvy, very buzzy, and the red line doesn't appear until an incredible
29:0813,500rpm, and you really do need to be pushing it at over 7,000rpm to get anything like decent
29:15performance.
29:16I reckon you could plonk a non-sports bike rider on this, and they'd quite happily tootle
29:21around all day at maybe below 6,000rpm.
29:24They'd bring it back, and they'd wonder what all the fuss was about, because below that,
29:27you really don't get any kind of performance.
29:29But if you're willing to push the revs hard, it really does come to life.
29:51So, how does it compare to other 600s?
30:06You'd have to say it's not as comfy as Honda's CBR600, and it hasn't got the same smooth
30:11power delivery as Kawasaki's ZZR600.
30:15But if you're into more racy lines and a more racy riding position, and you're prepared
30:18to work the engine hard, then it's a good choice.
30:22Talking of riding position, something that you'll notice when you get on one, is if you're
30:26not riding like this with your head on the tank, and you're a little more upright like
30:29this, then it's actually difficult to see the speedo and the rev counter, because you're
30:33looking through the top part of this clear screen here, and if that was a tinted screen,
30:37you'd have no chance of seeing what was going on.
30:39Just that that's the way the curvature of the front is, and it's such a racy look that
30:44it's a small price to pay, I suppose.
30:46Speaking of racy looks, if you want to go for the full racetrack look, you can do this
30:50little trick.
30:51Pop your key under there, release the latch, and remove the pillion pad, and you can replace
30:55that with a rear cowl in there, converts it into a single seat and makes it look a bit
31:00more racetracky.
31:01And let's face it, you wouldn't want too many people to spend too long on that, would you?
31:06And while we're at the back end, if you get turned on by rubber, you've got a rubber fetish
31:10and you're into big fat rear tyres, then you'll like the 180 section fitted to the rear of
31:15the GSX-R.
31:16I think it's fair to say that the GSX-R hasn't exactly taken the 600 sports bike class by
31:21storm.
31:22Not because it's overpriced.
31:23£7,200 compares very favourably with everything else in its class.
31:27It's probably because it's a bit more radical.
31:29It looks more racy.
31:31It looks more like a race rep, more of a race thoroughbred.
31:34And because of this, and because of its motor, it requires a slightly different riding technique.
31:39You really have to work the engine quite hard, keep the revs up to get the best out of its
31:42performance.
31:44So, if you're into high revs and precision racetrack handling, then here it is.
31:49What a beautiful day for riding a bike, not a storm cloud in the sky.
32:17If like me, you're a fan of big trail bikes, you're going to like this.
32:21Because big trail bikes just got bigger, badder and meaner.
32:26This is the V-Strom.
32:31Suzuki's DL-1000 V-Strom is the latest entrant into the increasingly competitive big traily
32:36market and as such goes head to head with established market leaders like BMW's R1150GS
32:43and Triumph's Tiger, as well as younger pretenders including the Honda Varadero and Aprilia Caponaut.
32:54Suzuki have got one up on the lot of them by picking the weirdest name yet to come from
32:57a Japanese marketing department.
32:59V-Strom sounds to me rather like a typing error and conjures up images of the marketing
33:04department having to change the model name when they realise their own fairing graphics
33:07have been delivered.
33:08I'm told by a Norwegian friend that Strom actually means power.
33:11Let's see if he's right.
33:13This is a 207kg trail bike that's well capable of giving many a sports bike a good run for
33:19its money while still behaving like a pussycat in traffic.
33:25The frame and cycle parts are well up to the job.
33:27This massive alloy twin beam frame holding everything together really securely.
33:32We've got a conventional alloy swinging arm at the back and right way up forks at the
33:36front.
33:37And putting this in callipers at the front and a single one at the rear pull everything
33:40down from speed.
33:42The tyres say trail wing on them in a nod to the bike's off-road pretensions but I don't
33:46think these are ever going to see anything more than tarmac.
33:51Suzuki have had no qualms about going for the jugular in the styling department and
33:55the bike's aggressive stance is highlighted by the predatory looking headlamps and beefy
34:00twin silencers that look capable of launching motors at following traffic.
34:06On the road the bike feels surprisingly manageable and can be hurled around like something half
34:11its weight and capacity.
34:13It's reassuring, forgiving and comfortable and the high riding position lets you exchange
34:18nods with lorry drivers whilst looking disdainfully down at the swarms of Mondeos beneath you.
34:24The vertically challenged may need to enlist the services of a small stepladder to climb
34:28aboard but once you're up there you won't want to get off.
34:33A good practical all-rounder and great fun.
34:44It won't quite eat fire blades for breakfast but it has more than enough power for most
34:48of us.
34:50Power delivery is strong and a smooth torque curve makes the bike easy to handle in traffic.
34:55The chassis and brakes are well up to the job and the bike feels safe and forgiving
34:59to ride.
35:00For performance, 8 out of 10.
35:03This big tall riding position may not suit everybody but it rivals my favourite armchair
35:08for comfort with great vision all around.
35:10The fairing is surprisingly effective at speed too keeping the worst of the wind blast away
35:14from all the rider apart from maybe a little bit to your head and shoulders.
35:17For comfort I've got to give this bike 9 out of 10.
35:21Some of the fasteners in the disc centres may begin to rust fairly quickly if neglected
35:25and some of the plastics are a bit, well, plastic-y but paint finish is good and those
35:30stainless exhausts should last almost into the next millennium.
35:34For build quality, 6 out of 10.
35:37So what do you get for your money?
35:38At £7,350 on the road the V-Strom is pretty good value managing to undercut both the Triumph
35:44Tiger, the BMW GS and the Varadero but watch out for the Yamaha TDM 900 galloping up on
35:50the inside at just a few pounds cheaper.
35:53I think the V-Strom gives you a lot of bike for your money but you must be prepared for
35:56some depreciation.
35:57For value I'd give this bike 7 out of 10.
36:00It's a big, mean and tough looking bike that looks like it could crush the opposition with
36:05a glance.
36:06Only the misspelled fairing graphics mar the image slightly.
36:10If Suzuki rebadged it as a V-Storm I'd have to give it 8 but for the time being 7 out
36:16of 10 for street cred.
36:24The 600cc market dominated by sports bikes, yes, we've got the CBR600, ZX6R, Yamaha's
36:35R6 and the GSX-R600 all snapping at the heels.
36:39So where does this, Suzuki's GSX-F600 fit in?
36:45In the real world that's where.
36:47Sure it's power at 80bhp is down on a sports bike but it's got more power than a 1.4 Ford
36:52Fiesta so it's not exactly underpowered.
36:56In fact the retuned GSX-R motor is a pearler, it's smooth and torquey and ideally suited
37:01to a sports touring middleweight like this.
37:05And talking about touring, look at this, it might not be very fashionable but it's got
37:10a centre stand and that's ideal when you're touring because you can store your luggage
37:15on the back, strap it onto the old bungee hooks there, it's great and also it's good
37:19for maintenance because you can adjust the back chain.
37:21In fact I think no bike should be without one.
37:24So what else have we got?
37:25Well up the front this fairing, really neat, very smooth, fared in, it's not massive but
37:31it does the job and it's surprisingly effective.
37:33Here you've got really good mirrors and I mean these days they are more and more important
37:38but it's really a treat to see everything that's behind you instead of just seeing your
37:41elbows.
37:43Inside the cockpit itself, instruments, nothing that fantastic but everything's there that
37:47you want including the old fuel gauge and as you can see on top of the forks here they're
37:52adjustable for rebound damping.
37:55Down at the bottom, again nothing fantastic but the brakes, four pot calipers, two of
38:00them, no problem, stops the bike, again this is a real world bike, what more do you want?
38:07And at the back here, the rear suspension, that's adjustable for preload and rebound
38:11damping, not exactly easy to get up but nevertheless it's tucked up under there, you can do it.
38:17And it all works very well, some might not like the round styling but I think it suits
38:21its role well, it's an all rounder you see, anyway the riding position is relaxed, the
38:27fairing very effective and the motor as I've said is as sweet as a nut.
38:32Derived from the air, oil cooled GSX-R, it can really motor if you want but it's just
38:37as happy burbling along in the mid-range, weight wise it's a reasonable 200 kilos and
38:42the suspension is more than adequate to cope.
38:45It's compliant but not soft and the handling is fluid, safe and predictable, making for
38:50a relaxed ride.
38:55And that's all helped of course by this massive seat, plenty of room for two up and also you
38:59as the pilot sit in this, not on it, but also underneath there, if you just lift off the
39:04old seat, Suzuki say there's four and a half litres of storage space under here and you
39:09can see it, there's that big trough down the bottom there where you can put your water
39:12spruce in, you've got this space here for a U-lock and the tail in there for your tools,
39:17all very useful stuff.
39:18And what you can also see, of course useful for a touring bike, is this, the old grab
39:23rail for the pillion passenger, just a job.
39:28Reinforces its touring capabilities are the old bungee hooks, you've got one there, one
39:33there, one there, that's six points all together to get those old bungee elastics on, you can
39:37see the old helmet lock there and also if you look up on the fairing here, we've got
39:42the fuel tap with a reserve position on it and a priming one, really useful, as you know
39:47most bikes just got warning lights these days but you can't beat a reserve.
39:51If we come to the rear end, very appropriate that, this tyre looks narrow by today's standards,
39:56150mm cross section but it's adequate for the job, it's sensible remember.
40:02Now while I'm here you can't really forget this or omit it, what does it remind you of?
40:07A baboon's bum I'd say, that's processed a bit unkind.
40:11But anyway, on to more practical things, silencer down there, all stainless steel system
40:16right from the end can right through to the engine, so if you're an all weather rider
40:21this could be the bike for you.
40:23So what's wrong with it then, nothing, absolutely nothing and why don't we see more of them?
40:29Because we want to be noticed it seems, this one you see is for the thinker, the one who
40:33thinks more of his pocket and his bum than he does his image, it'll do everything most
40:37of us are capable of and at 5174 list or just 4199 for this parallel I have to say
40:45it's a bit of a bargain, born again think again, this could be for you.
40:511.4 litre engine, nothing special especially in a small hatchback but the thing is with
40:56a 1.4 litre engine in a car it will take four people on the holidays and shopping no trouble
41:00at all.
41:01So what would a 1.4 litre engine be like in a motorbike?
41:05Now I don't mean an old Corsa engine, I mean this, the engine in the new GSX 1400 Suzuki.
41:12Yes 1400cc's or 1402 to be exact, a 4 cylinder muscle all bolted up in a neat retro looking
41:19but brand new bike frame, we might have seen big 4 cylinder engines before but not this
41:24big and it really does feel it, not in an intimidating way just in an effortless gentle
41:30giant way, the sort of feeling you get as a jumbo jet takes to the skies and that's
41:35due to its massive torque, all 93 foot pounds of it, that's a third more than a 1200 bandit.
41:42But what else would you expect from such a massive motor?
41:45Just look at it, it absolutely dominates the bike, 1400cc, big cubes as the Americans would
41:51say.
41:52Close fins there, more pronounced fins at the top but these are real fins, they're not
41:56just for decoration because this engine is in fact based on the 1985 GSX-R motor, it's
42:01been updated of course, completely redesigned but that's why they've kept these fins here,
42:06it's oil and air cooled hence the little radiator up there, they've redesigned the head, narrower
42:10valve angle for better breathing, it's got fuel injection of course and it's got a balancer
42:14shaft at the back for smoothness but there it is, all looking very proud there, big chrome
42:19pipes, very retro polished cases, looks a treat.
42:24Now it's not mega GSX-R fowl powerful at 106bhp but with all that 93 foot pounds of torque
42:31it's certainly powerful enough for this style of bike, after all there's no wind protection.
42:36But there's something about this upright riding position that inspires confidence, you can
42:41hustle it along and it's neutral handling makes slicing through bends a real pleasure.
42:46At 228kg it's substantial but it doesn't feel at all heavy and the suspension is superbly
42:52matched to the task.
42:54Now granted these forks look like something from the 80s but they're not of course, brand
42:58new again, big 46mm stanchions, you never used to get those in the 80s so we've got
43:03a retro look but bang up to date and they're fully adjustable, you've got your preload
43:08at the top there and your rebound damping, compression damping down at the bottom there
43:11and look, nice gold calipers as well and six pots at that clamping up on 320mm discs, alloy
43:17wheel of course and then coming up the top here we've got a nice chrome headlamp, very
43:22retro-ish and the chrome instruments, reminds me of the old Kawasaki Z1 up there but very
43:26neat.
43:29Now I'm off the bike you can actually get a decent look at this seat and it really is
43:32a big seat and very, very comfortable.
43:34As I've said the seat height isn't that high, only 790mm but it's nice, comfortably padded
43:39and it's stepped as well, pillion passenger has got a nice squad as well but not only
43:44is it big to look at and big to sit on, it's big underneath, just unlock the old seat here.
43:51Under there just look at this absolutely massive storage compartment, take the handbook out,
43:56under this tray here, separate little tray, you just click that out, the battery sits
43:59under there but see all that space, you can get a U-lock in there, you can get waterproofs
44:03in there, tool roll sits in the back there, you can even get a small one man tent in there
44:07I reckon but I've never seen such a massive area on an ordinary bike, it's almost scooter
44:12like isn't it?
44:13Put the seat back and not only is it comfortable, you've also got these handy little bungee
44:18carrying things.
44:19Now I've seen, I know you've seen these before, you can hook your bungee hook on there but
44:23also you've got this one which is very neat, this fold out one there, far better than putting
44:27a bungee hook round the indicators which I know it's all too easy to do but that's much
44:31stronger there and neatly folds away, one each side, you've got another one there, again
44:36nothing new there but I like those fold out ones.
44:39On the road this parallel example will cost you £5,899, at this price it's no more than
44:45a bandit but I'd say it's worth extra because no doubt about it this is an in your face
44:50no mistake motorbike.
44:51To me it's much classier than a bandit and while not in the same state as Suzuki's own
44:57highly flickable GSX-R sports bikes, who cares, shooting the breeze on the GSX-R 1400 takes
45:03on a whole new meaning.
45:05You know a bike should be for life and not just for Christmas but sadly that isn't always
45:10the case, as riders become more experienced they tend to go for lighter, powerful and
45:16a for sale sign can easily pop up but if you're the type of person who likes to grow with
45:21and not grow out of your motorcycle then don't overlook this slinky little number, it's the
45:26Suzuki SV650S and it could be right up your street.
45:32The bike is built around a 90 degree 645cc V-twin featuring double overhead cams and
45:38four valves per cylinder.
45:40Its design is derived from its larger siblings the TL1000F and the TL1000R.
45:45Despite the bike's competitive pricing make no mistake this motor is absolutely the very
45:51latest in technology producing 70 odd horses at 9000rpm.
45:57The SV's six speed transmission is smooth and the gear ratios are well spaced.
46:02With its broad torque curve providing good pull from 3000rpm all the way through to the
46:07red line you have more than enough gears to work with and sixth gear is comfortably high
46:12at motorway speeds.
46:15The chassis and the swing arm are developed in part for their good looks but they're made
46:19up from cast aluminium which is extremely strong and stiff.
46:23You won't be able to tax this bike on the streets and I've heard that apparently this
46:28chassis is super cool for track days so all you speed enthusiasts out there you'll have
46:34no problem with that.
46:37Okay so the motor and the chassis are very good but what about the handling?
46:41Well if anything the handling is even more impressive.
46:44Start with the stiff well designed chassis we've already discussed and add to it the
46:48extremely low weight around 169kg dry according to Suzuki, some quality rubber and you have
46:55a stable yet nimble package.
46:58Now although the suspension is quite soft for hard charging through the corners the
47:02chassis almost makes up for it.
47:05Besides the softish suspension turns out to be perfect for most everyday riding purposes.
47:11Now the brakes in keeping with this theme are excellent for a bike around this price
47:16range.
47:17Minimum force and just a couple of fingers is all you need to bring this lovely little
47:21SV nicely to a halt.
47:25So the SV is light, it's nimble, it's easy to ride, it's predictable and it's fast.
47:31Not only that but it's well priced so what have we got so far?
47:35Well it's looking good but let's check out those scores on the doors.
47:40Well I reckon it's a truly impressive bike that'll satisfy both the novice and the more
47:46experienced rider.
47:48Power is there, it's plentiful and it's delivered in a characterful way.
47:52The brakes have plenty of stopping power and this chassis is an absolute joy.
47:57So I reckon to sum it up for performance we'll give it a generous 9 out of 10.
48:03Comfort, well it is biased more towards a sportier riding position and that can be a
48:08little heavy on the wrist for someone who's smaller and a bit lighter like myself.
48:13Although the overall comfort factor is there and I reckon this little SV deserves 8 out
48:18of 10.
48:19And that brings us on to quality of the bike.
48:22It's build quality, let's give it 9 out of 10.
48:26You know those Japanese really know how to put a bike together and for the price of this
48:30bike they've used high quality components and there's a lot of workmanship gone into
48:35it.
48:36You know it's not that easy really to find a bike that's as happy cruising up and down
48:39the motorway as it is tearing around a racetrack and all for the bargain price of around £4,800.
48:46And for that this SV deserves another 9 out of 10.
48:52Now let's talk street cred for a minute shall we.
48:54This isn't a bad looking bike.
48:56I mean it will blend in with most other bikes at the traffic lights, it doesn't exactly
48:59jump out at you but if you want to go the whole hog fit a natty little exhaust on the
49:04back and it'll sound just like a Ducati Superbike.
49:07And for that, for now, it earns a street cred figure of 7 out of 10.
49:27First up it's Suzuki's GSX-R600.
49:30Introduced in 1996 the GSX-R600 became the 600 to own for all wannabe racers.
49:36This 2001 bike is the first of the new shape and features the now familiar Suzuki brand
49:41styling.
49:42This new model was very closely related to its bigger brother the GSX-R750 and both featured
49:47a whole host of design cues taken from the GP race bikes.
49:51The first time you ride this you'll find yourself getting off afterwards to check it actually
49:55has 600 on the fairing and not 750.
49:58This bike featured more mid-range than most 750's of the time and also looked a whole
50:02lot better too.
50:04So Shelly, bike number one is the beautiful Suzuki GSX-R600.
50:11What do you think to the looks of this?
50:13Looks very heavy.
50:14Pretty but heavy.
50:15Well yeah.
50:16So does that frighten you?
50:18Well I've never considered it before but it's always put me off.
50:21Right because you're coming from your 125 aren't you?
50:23Yeah.
50:24So what bikes have you been looking at or thinking about?
50:27Well it's mainly the R6 that take my eye.
50:30Right.
50:31Because it looks quite dainty.

50:36But these are fantastic.
50:37They are gorgeous looking.
50:38Great sports bike.

50:41Just mainly fun.
50:42You know, Sundays.
50:43Yeah.
50:44Until you get used to it.
50:45That's it.
50:46And then it's like everyday.
50:47That's it.
50:48Will you take it on the track?
50:49I'd like to eventually.
50:50Yeah.
50:51When I've had a bit more practice.
50:52When your confidence builds and stuff.
50:53Brilliant.
50:54Well you know there's only one way to build your confidence and that's to get on them.

51:08The chassis on the GSX-R600 is virtually identical to that of the 750, so you know the handling
51:14is going to be spot on.
51:16Performance too is good with the new fuel injection providing plentiful smooth progressive
51:21power, making this bike an ideal candidate for track days.
51:25Performance wise, this bike is now much more modern in appearance and has lost that bulbous
51:28styling of the previous model.
51:30Pillion provision is not particularly good, so this bike is more suited to one-up riding
51:34with your mates than taking your partner out for a Sunday stroll.
51:44So Shelley, are you a Suzuki lady?
