00:00 [MUSIC]
00:07 It started when a bunch of Audi executives must have got a bit kind of free and easy and relaxed
00:11 and said to their design team, "Here, what kind of sports car do you think we should be building?"
00:15 And the design team came back with a concept that wowed the public at the 1995 Frankfurt show.
00:21 The executives said, "Hmm, the public like it, we like it. Build it. There's just one proviso.
00:26 We want the actual car to look like the concept car." And for once, that's what happened.
00:31 The public saw the concept car, loved it, said, "Build it for us." And that's what the public got, the TT Coupe.
00:38 When they set out to design the TT, they decided to start with the wheels, which is logical enough.
00:45 They are quite important on a car. And then to sort of stretch the bodywork over them.
00:49 They'll tell you that it's a case of form following function,
00:52 but there's no doubt that Audi wanted their new sports car to be pretty.
00:56 You'd expect the build quality to be something special, and the TT does not disappoint.
01:01 It feels like it's been hewn from one solid piece of aluminium,
01:04 and the materials used inside and out are top quality. They're a textural delight.
01:10 It's really rather difficult. What does a guy do? Criticise a car for being too good?
01:15 Or ask that the manufacturer engineers a few fundamental flaws into the design
01:19 to make it a little more challenging and a little more personable?
01:22 Well, no, you don't. Sure, this is more than capable of handling the 180bhp it has with this engine.
01:28 The chassis and whole handling package could easily deal with the 225bhp version coming later,
01:33 and more than that, in fact. But then this is emphatically not a hooligan car.
01:38 It is a very, very good-looking car that also happens to drive rather well, too.
01:43 Sure, you may, after a while, tire a little of the bland, rather neutral handling characteristics,
01:49 and perhaps of the way in which it copes so adequately and completely with its power,
01:53 but who could ever, ever tire of a car that looks this beautiful?
02:10 Once underway, it's no surprise. Just one look at the car will tell you roughly how it's going to handle.
02:14 It's very flickable, very turnable, direct steering.
02:17 Those minimal overhangs front and rear that give the car its shape from the outside are more than just image.
02:22 They actually serve the purpose of keeping all the weight between the wheels,
02:25 which means it's much easier to control and you don't get any pendulum effects through the corners.
02:29 And through those corners, Audi's extremely complex now four-wheel drive system,
02:33 redistributing the power and traction to front or rear wheels according to demand,
02:38 effectively operating as really a rather sophisticated traction control system, which is great.
02:43 There's no doubt about it. It's very hard to chuck this car at the scenery. Very hard.
02:47 There are occasions when you'd quite like to feel like you might be able to.
02:50 In fact, I find myself thinking that it's a bit like a lot of life.
02:54 You get given something only for it to be taken away.
02:56 In this case, Audi give you an incredibly agile chassis based on the very popular A3.
03:01 They give it a really good tractable engine, but then they give it so many technical wizardry and gizmos
03:07 that you can't possibly get the thing into trouble.
03:09 And you do find yourself after a while trying to get it into trouble and get the car out of shape.
03:14 Now try as you might, you can't.
03:17 Whoever works in the neat finishing touches department at Audi
03:21 has clearly not had much sleep over the past year or so.
03:24 The thing is covered with them and it all starts with the rather beautiful petrol cap
03:29 at the rear of the car operated by this little button here.
03:35 And then you can't even cross the threshold without first encountering this beautiful little TT bash plate.
03:41 And immediately we see the shape of the petrol cap with its allen bolts around the edge reflected everywhere.
03:47 For a start in the door handle and in the lower part of the door handle as well.
03:51 In the air vents on the side and in the centre.
03:53 In the centre of the steering wheel.
03:55 Even little tiny ones in the middle of the needles in the centre of every single dial on the dashboard.
04:01 In every single button across the middle and all over the gear lever on the knob on top
04:06 and the ring around the bottom of the thing.
04:08 And it's details like that that make it very special.
04:10 But it's more than just the little tiny details.
04:12 The architecture of this cabin is just unforgettable.
04:16 They went for the same basic fundamental taut kind of feel that they've got with the exterior of the car.
04:22 So we have one plane going this way that's intersected by everything else coming this way.
04:27 So we have these tubes finishing in the air vents with these kind of ribbed tops on them.
04:32 The binnacle itself for the instruments is just perched and thrusting out of this thing with the steering wheel below it.
04:38 And the transmission tunnel does the same thing putting power down to the rear as well as the front wheels.
04:43 And even details like these braces here.
04:46 They're something to rest your knee against if you're cornering hard.
04:49 But they are also there to brace the whole of the dashboard
04:52 and stop you getting those horrible wobbly effects that you might get on a cheaper coupe.
04:57 Audi expect the more powerful TT to be the big seller
05:01 with a split of 80% of sales going to the 225bhp version and the 180bhp version taking the remaining 20%.
05:08 They only anticipate selling 1,000 in this its first year.
05:12 Next year, its first proper full year, they expect about 1,300.
05:16 Pricing is fairly simple. There are only two versions.
05:19 £26,000 will get you behind the wheel of the 180bhp version.
05:24 £29,000 will get you behind the wheel of the more powerful 225bhp.
05:28 Optional extras are limited to pretty much a choice of bigger wheels on the smaller car.
05:32 And that's it.
05:33 You have to feel sorry for them really. Audi, I mean.
05:43 They brought us all the way to Spain for the weather.
05:47 But it's about a facelift for the A4, their most important car.
05:50 It's their biggest seller by quite a long way and accounts for probably half of their sales in the UK year on year.
05:55 So you've got to be very careful when you start playing around with a car like that.
05:58 Perhaps that explains why it really is only a mild facelift.
06:02 But not all of the changes are on the outside.
06:04 There have been some made in here as well.
06:07 Though not a lot, it's been limited mostly to small touches.
06:12 Things like the buttons which are backlit and actually lifted from the A6.
06:16 They have the same positive feel when you use them.
06:18 And cup holders and the usual ergonomic sense that you would expect to find in the cabin of any Audi.
06:23 In fact, it's starting to feel very familiar.
06:25 There's a familiar feeling about the light and the colours and the quality of materials used.
06:29 That lets you know you're in anything from the Audi range.
06:31 It's been quite a journey for our German chums.
06:36 From purveyors of tedious, tweedy old nails whose only attribute really was that they just wouldn't die.
06:41 They've become the very epitome of cool, sharp style.
06:44 The point at which excellence of design meets understated good looks.
06:48 To produce the motoring equivalent of some fancy clothes designer whose name I'll probably never know.
06:53 But you get the point. Chic and slick.
06:55 So what's gone on? Well, quite a lot actually.
06:58 Audi thought shy of making significant external changes to a car that's already selling well.
07:02 Subtle, yes, but no less effective for it.
07:06 The wide-mouthed frog treatment at the front accentuates the grille.
07:09 And straight away gives the car something of a miniature A8 look.
07:12 The new fog lamps set lower into the front spoiler are reminiscent of the A6.
07:16 And also free up space in the headlamps for the higher discharge lamps.
07:20 There are redesigned bumpers, new door handles and mirrors, new side rubbing strips and a reshaped boot lid that incorporates a flush, soft-touch grip.
07:28 Safety features abound with ABS, electronic brake force distribution, front airbags, front side airbags and now an airbag isolation switch for the passenger seat.
07:37 It means you can switch off the airbag and avoid injuries to children in safety seats in the front.
07:42 And the prices, there's no big changes there really, starting at around 17.5 grand for the entry-level 1.6 and rising to just under 29 big banan for the stonking 2.8 quattro.
07:53 There have been changes made under the surface as well in the suspension, front and rear.
07:59 Nothing too radical, the same basic layout is kept with the front and rear axles.
08:02 But it has been slightly altered, though it doesn't make any appreciable difference to the drive nor to the ride.
08:07 The engines do stay the same, there are three four-cylinder petrol engines, there's two V6s, one the TDI and there's the 1.9 TDI as well.
08:16 The Germans are not exactly a generous bunch, okay I know I'm a bit generalising here a little, well a lot, but tie wads really.
08:23 Certainly as far as motor industry is concerned, BMWs and Audis are not renowned for giving kit away.
08:28 If you want anything more than a wheel nut, it's going to cost you.
08:31 But the interior trim level and the spec level has been upped a little.
08:36 As with the A4 previously, it's a great drive. It is quite a small, compact car and it feels that on the road.
08:42 Very capable, so capable as to be pretty bland really.
08:45 It's only when you've got the extra power that's available in the larger engine versions that you can really start to explore the handling.
08:50 Before that, it's all extremely safe and predictable.
08:54 Safety standards have been improved throughout the range as well.
08:58 Airbags are now available to cover pretty much every surface.
09:00 We've got them here at the top, at the side and we've got them here on the front pillars and obviously in front of both driver and passenger.
09:07 Facelifts like this are very important to the motor industry.
09:12 They give a manufacturer an opportunity to lift and refresh an otherwise already very popular model.
09:18 And the facelift of the Audi A4 is a very good example of that.
09:21 It is very important to Audi that it continues to work.
09:24 Subtle though it may be, the changes made to it I think work.
09:27 It does bring it into line with the rest of the range.
09:30 I don't think they'll lose any of the loyalty that they've established so far and maybe they'll build some more.
09:35 And perhaps if it does anything, it does prove one thing.
09:37 Vorsprung durch Technik, which is I've always known, actually means if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
09:44 And then others lead a life more, well, ordinary.
09:55 Their bonnets don't need scoops or bulges and their wheels will never be clad in funky rock-scrambling tyres.
10:01 But they do offer a handy bit of load space.
10:05 They're nice and comfy inside and they don't make you look too silly.
10:08 They are, in other words, a lot like pants.
10:11 Whether it's a standard pair of Y-fronts or a funky latex thong in lilac green with tiger-skin waistband and studs up the front,
10:18 they've all got the same basic job to do.
10:21 A bit like the Audi A4 Avant, really.
10:23 So, is it the saggy old Ys of the family car world or the Tom Jones over-trousers specials?
10:29 Let's talk pants.
10:51 This is the most important point when you're choosing both pants and an everyday car.
10:58 Comfort.
10:59 Because if it rattles your undercarriage, it's going in the bin.
11:04 And on the comfort front, the news for the A4 Avant is good.
11:08 They've taken a typically German approach to comfort, namely rock-solid seats that gradually give and conform to your own preferences.
11:16 And, of course, the comfort is good.
11:19 The A4 Avant is a bit more comfortable than the A4 Avant.
11:22 It's got a bit more of a "sleeping bag" feel to it.
11:25 But, on the comfort front, the news for the A4 Avant is good.
11:33 It's also got a great ride, thanks largely to the all-new all-aluminium suspension,
11:40 which keeps everything on the straight and narrow.
11:42 And it is a very comfortable ride.
11:45 [MUSIC]
12:03 Our next point of pantage assessment is very close to comfort.
12:07 It's one thing keeping everything nice and comfy when you're just dawdling around town.
12:11 But can your pants and your everyday car cope when the pace heats up a little?
12:15 [MUSIC]
12:22 Well, yeah, this particular pair of shredders certainly can.
12:25 It does depend on which version you go for.
12:27 There's a huge range of engines.
12:28 At the bottom of the range, a 1.8-litre petrol, which is perfectly respectable.
12:32 And, I suppose, in performance terms at the top, a 3-litre V6, which is very nice,
12:37 especially when mated to Audi's very clever Quattro four-wheel drive system.
12:41 [MUSIC]
12:45 This particular one today is a 2.5-litre turbo diesel, and it's great for a turbo diesel.
12:50 Powerful, punchy, torquey. It even sounds really good.
12:53 In this instance, we've got it mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, which is very handy.
12:58 But there is, for the first time, the choice of Audi's Multitronic semi-automatic clever gearbox,
13:03 which is also very good.
13:04 Start to press on a bit, and you do feel the advantage of the A4 being slightly bigger in all directions than the older version.
13:10 But it's still a compact car. It still feels quite chuckable.
13:13 So, performance, good news.
13:15 So, in panther terms, we're talking comfy and able to keep everything together nicely when the pace hots up.
13:22 But, another critical factor now, you'll never be truly comfy if everything's all, you know, squashed in.
13:29 Know what I mean?
13:30 Well, it's an Audi, so you really don't have to worry on that front.
13:33 What we have here is the equivalent of a triple-sticked gusset, industrially elasticated waist with Kevlar side panels.
13:40 Anything you try and do to wear these babies out will hurt you first.
13:45 So, our pants are comfy, they're spacious, and they're tough.
13:48 But, will people laugh at you when they see you in them?
13:51 This isn't the biggest on the market, and those with a seriously big load to accommodate are going to be looking elsewhere straight away.
14:02 But, for those of us with a more standard load to accommodate, things are looking good.
14:07 Great boot space, easy access for getting your tackle in and out,
14:11 and there's a handy underfloor dirt tray in case you should inadvertently bring any muck in.
14:16 The Audi, though, is a very comfy pair of pants.
14:24 It's unobtrusive, but good-looking.
14:26 It's spacious on the inside, but compact.
14:29 Stylish, but built to last.
14:32 It's certainly not your leather thong, but then it's not your stringy old Y-fronts either.
14:36 It's somewhere in the middle, a pair of designer boxers maybe.
14:39 I wouldn't be surprised if in a year or two you find it nestling there at the back of your pan drawer as your favourite old pair.
14:45 This is Jim Reeder.
14:50 He's a 35-year-old technical director who's looking to spend around £20,000 to £25,000 on a car that's a little more suitable for family life.
14:59 So, Jim, at the moment you're currently driving the 9-3 convertible. Are you pleased with that?
15:08 Yeah, it's been great. Unfortunately, in this country we don't usually get the weather for that type of car.
15:12 And what's the reason that you want to change the car now?
15:14 Two kids, basically.
15:15 Two kids. So it's not the ideal car, is it?
15:17 It's not that practical, no.
15:19 How many miles do you do it a year?
15:21 Anything up to about 40,000.
15:23 So you're looking for something that's comfortable, refined, good cruiser?
15:26 Absolutely, yeah.
15:27 And what sort of budget have you got?
15:29 Anything up to probably 25,000, but the cheaper the better, really.
15:32 Absolutely. I mean, you want to stay away from the likes of the mass-produced wreck cars like the Monbeas.
15:36 Yes, I'm used to certain creature comforts.
15:38 Yeah, something nice. Well, we think we've found three very nice cars for you, so we'll show you those now.
15:43 Okay.
15:46 Well, Jim, we've picked out three really good executive compact saloons for you today.
15:51 The first of those is the BMW 3 Series.
15:54 What do you reckon to these cars?
15:55 It looks a beautiful car. Nice wheels, leather interior. Looks very nice, indeed.
16:00 The price of this when it was new was pushing 30 grand.
16:03 Wow.
16:04 But now, a two-year-old example like this could be yours for around about £21,000, £22,000.
16:08 I suppose that's quite a saving.
16:09 Not too bad. And not only that, but this is the 330 diesel.
16:13 Have you considered a diesel? Would you go for one of those, do you think?
16:15 Very much so, both for tax reasons with a company vehicle and also economy.
16:19 So you like the 360?
16:20 Yes.
16:21 Well, the second of those cars is the Alfa Romeo 156.
16:25 Now, this has been around since 1998.
16:28 It's just had a mid-life sort of facelift recently, but there's something about the Alfa, isn't there?
16:35 Yes, I think it's seen very much as a driver's car.
16:38 Certainly people that I've spoken to who've owned them or driven them have said it's a great car to drive.
16:42 It's got a certain style to it.
16:45 Yes, it looks a nice car.
16:46 I mean, maybe the only thing that does perhaps let them down is the build quality, but who knows?
16:51 Well, you get a chance to have a drive of it and see what you think on the road soon.
16:54 And the final car is, well, probably the newest of the three.
16:58 It's the Audi A4, only introduced just over a year ago.
17:02 What do you reckon to the A4s?
17:04 It looks a beautiful car from the outside, and certainly in terms of the styling, it does look the most contemporary.
17:08 The Alfa Romeo is the cheapest of the three cars, perhaps unsurprisingly, at just over £13,000.
17:13 And this is sort of mid-price.
17:14 I mean, new this would have been round about £21,000.
17:17 This is a 1.8 turbo sport.
17:19 It's not the Quattro, but it's a year old.
17:22 It's in a fairly high mileage in a year, about £30,000, but now it's dropped down to just over £16,000.
17:26 That's quite a good price for a relatively new car.
17:29 It's a good saving, isn't it?
17:30 And with the build quality and that sort of mileage, I wouldn't see that as a problem.
17:33 It wouldn't be any problem.
17:34 And of course, this is a petrol, whereas the other two are diesels.
17:37 So it'll be interesting to compare how they drive.
17:40 Yes, it'll be an interesting comparison.
17:41 Right, well, let's take this one out first.
17:42 Okay.
17:43 So, Jim, I don't know about you, but I really like the style of these new Audi A4s.
17:48 They've only been on the market for less than a year now.
17:51 What do you reckon of them?
17:53 I've always liked Audis anyway.
17:55 Yeah, they seem chunky, solid, nice styling.
17:58 Now, Audi have stuck with the front-wheel-drive philosophy for many years,
18:03 or the alternative to that is to have the full four-wheel-drive and go from the Quattro.
18:07 Now, this is the 1.8 turbo, but it's front-wheel-drive only.
18:10 But it drives well, doesn't it?
18:11 It does, yeah.
18:12 I mean, I think for the most part, rear-wheel-drive doesn't really cater for the majority of driving that you do.
18:18 If it's on the motorway, front-wheel-drive's good enough.
18:21 And I think it gives you that bit more interior space as well.
18:24 Now, when this car was new, it would have cost somewhere over £20,000, £21,000,
18:28 which still seems pretty good value for money for a brand-new car.
18:32 That's quite a lot of car for your money, isn't it?
18:34 It is, isn't it?
18:35 But now with, what, it's in a fairly high mileage, £28,000, something like that?
18:40 Yep.
18:41 £16,300.
18:44 It's a good buy, certainly. It's a lot of car for the money.
18:46 And I think with the build quality of Audi, £16,000, you're getting a lot of car for that sort of price.
18:53 If the Alfa 156 is all about fiery Italian fury,
18:57 then the Audi A4 is all about quiet, discreet, designer chic.
19:02 Whereas the Alfa roars about its style and passion,
19:05 the Audi A4 walks up quietly, taps you on the shoulder, and hands you a very smart business card.
19:10 The interior oozes quiet elegance and absolute build quality.
19:16 Outside, those inclined to such flights of fancy will start waffling on about the architectural elements in the design.
19:26 And it does look very structured, very smart, very solid from all angles.
19:31 And this is the new A4, so if anything, it looks sharper than ever.
19:35 But you're not buying a painting here, you don't want to just look at it, you're going to be using it as a car.
19:39 For your money, you'll get the 1.8T, that means a 1.8 litre petrol engine with a turbo.
19:44 It's not exactly a rabid racing machine,
19:46 but it'll quite happily munch away at the motorway miles for intergalactic distances,
19:51 and it should never miss a beat.
19:53 As well as reliability, of course, you want practicality.
19:56 Well, the A4 is a classic saloon car.
19:59 Four doors, enough rear seat accommodation, and plenty of boot space.
20:03 So there's absolutely no problem there.
20:05 Of course, the Audi A4 might just be too discreetly styled,
20:09 too conservative, too sensible even for your personal preferences.
20:12 They do seem to be driven mostly by architect types in black polo-neck sweaters and trendy German designer glasses.
20:19 But that is all ultimately a question of personal taste.
20:22 And that, Jim, is down to you.
20:24 Build quality has become such an important factor these days,
20:37 not only for car makers, but for we, the public.
20:40 We want the solid, reassuring thud of a door.
20:45 Dare it be said, at the moment, that's not what you get with the Mercedes A-Class.
20:49 It just doesn't have a Merc feel to it.
20:51 Whereas the A2 has an Audi feel to it.
20:54 And in my opinion, at the moment, nobody builds cars better than Audi.
20:58 Lightweight construction is what this car is all about.
21:02 Audi's space frame, first used in the superb A8, goes to the masses in the A2.
21:08 An aluminium body contributes to over 40% weight saving compared to if this car had been made from steel.
21:15 That's a weight of just 895 kilograms, compared to the A-Class, which comes in at nearly 1,100 kilograms.
21:22 Dimensions indicate that the A2 is longer but narrower than the A-Class.
21:27 And that extra length means more boot space back here.
21:30 The A-Class has been criticised for not having enough.
21:33 The A2 gets 390 litres of space like that, or 1,085 litres with those seats folded back down.
21:40 And remember, this car is shorter than an A3.
21:45 Come on.
21:47 Now, interestingly, the A2 has been designed to seat just four people with individual sculptured seats here in the back.
21:54 Using what Audi call their 'space floor' concept.
21:57 What that means is that the rear footwells have been set lower than the front ones.
22:02 Thus creating lots of space and lots of headroom too.
22:06 Inside on the move, the view from each of the seats is absolutely excellent.
22:11 And what a lot of people buy these sorts of cars for, of course, is the high-up driving position.
22:16 And it just gives you such a commanding view of the road.
22:19 As you can see, there's lots and lots of headroom even for somebody 6ft tall like me.
22:23 I guess the main rivals for the A2 will of course have been the Mercedes A-Class.
22:27 But you've also got to look towards something like the Vauxhall Zafira, the Mazda Premacy, Fiat's Multipla and Renault's Scenic as the most direct rivals.
22:37 So just who would buy this sort of car?
22:40 I think people who would be interested in the A2 are people who don't want to sacrifice any of the quality that they would expect from an Audi.
22:48 The prestige elements of an Audi.
22:50 But also a car which is packaged in a more compact way than we have introduced a car in the past.
22:56 So it's very good space inside for the exterior dimensions.
23:01 It makes it a very nimble car.
23:03 Fun to drive.
23:05 And without compromising on comfort, security, safety and luxury.
23:12 Final specification has yet to be decided for the UK cars.
23:16 But expect to see electric windows, height adjustable seats, ABS brakes, alloy wheels as standard.
23:22 And of course the ubiquitous cup holders.
23:25 Before we arrived here in the south of France to test the A2, there had been some criticism back home in some magazines.
23:31 That the A2 suffered from excess noise and a harsh ride.
23:35 And wind noise coming into the cabin when you were cruising at about 70 miles an hour on the motorway.
23:40 I have to say that I can find no trace of that whatsoever.
23:44 We're cruising right now at about 70 miles an hour.
23:47 It's as quiet as anything.
23:49 There is no wind noise from any of the pillars, particularly around the A pillars where you would expect it to come in.
23:54 It is very quiet.
23:56 Audi's philosophy is always, I mean, "Vorsprung durch Technik" is looking for new ways of doing things.
24:01 And I think this is another good example of not accepting that that's the way to build a car.
24:06 A car being built with normal steel construction isn't the last word.
24:12 So at the end of the day, aluminium like this normally wraps up turkeys.
24:16 But I think the A2 is anything but a turkey.
24:22 There's no doubt that the A2 is a revolutionary car.
24:25 And I'd say these Benz with their rival, the A-Class, could be well and truly foiled.
24:29 Here's a good one, right? You'll love this.
24:31 What do you get if you cross a sheep with a kangaroo?
24:34 Well, probably quite an expensive lawsuit.
24:37 You certainly open up an interesting moral debate.
24:39 But we do love our hybrids.
24:41 It's the same with everything. We won't settle for just a food processor.
24:44 It's got to double up as a letter opener and shower cap as well.
24:46 And the same goes for our cars.
24:48 We want that bit extra.
24:49 That's why Audi invented the A6 Avant.
24:51 An estate car crossed with a sports car.
24:54 And they've done it again with this.
24:56 The Allroad.
24:57 An estate car crossed with a sports car crossed with an off-roader.
25:00 The result? Surely a big wobbly bag of compromises.
25:03 But we'll find out.
25:04 Drive the petrol engine version in a bit of a hurry
25:18 and you'll start to see what you would dream of in an ordinary off-roader.
25:21 0-60 comes up in a shade under 8 seconds.
25:23 A top speed of 147 miles an hour.
25:26 And all with that sure-footed, almost sports car handling.
25:30 Start to drift off-road and we're rocking and rolling.
25:32 It copes extremely well.
25:34 Because we're not a huge, cumbersome off-roader
25:36 it can actually skip along the smaller bumps very well indeed.
25:39 Audi's interiors can hold their head up in any company.
25:45 I rate them as amongst the very best in the world.
25:47 Such good news that there's no disappointment in here.
25:49 It's every bit an A6 Avant.
25:51 Beautiful, clean, sharp lines everywhere.
25:53 And every single bit made of the best quality materials
25:56 and fitted beautifully.
25:57 There's no stray lines or big gaps.
25:59 There's all the usual kit you'd expect to find on board.
26:02 We've got sophisticated satellite navigation, electrical, everything including must-seat.
26:06 But we've also got one interesting little panel here
26:09 and it's a big giveaway that this is actually a pretty serious car.
26:12 It's down here.
26:19 Because when Audi named it the Allroad, they did so with good reason.
26:23 It's suitable for all roads.
26:25 And that's not just because it has the quattro four-wheel drive system.
26:28 It also has a very clever air suspension system
26:30 which allows it to vary the ride height according to the conditions.
26:33 Let me explain and demonstrate.
26:35 Right now we're at normal.
26:37 About there.
26:38 For ordinary day-to-day driving around town.
26:40 If you go over 75 miles an hour or press the button to lower it
26:43 it automatically drops to its lower position.
26:46 Streamline for going really fast.
26:48 If you want to go a bit off-road, you hit the button, you go up, past normal, and on to high one.
26:53 We've got a bit of extra ground clearance so we don't catch anything underneath.
26:56 Fine. If it gets really tough, we can hit the button again and we go up to high two.
27:01 We're really high up. Nothing can catch us and we're safe.
27:05 That's the theory. That's just me jumping up and down.
27:08 Don't know how it works in the car.
27:09 So we'll try it. And we'll try it on all roads.
27:15 It is surprising. With this system you can get an Audi into places that you really don't expect to see an Audi.
27:21 And more importantly, you can get it out again.
27:24 Driving as I was, the automatic is certainly not ideal for off-roading.
27:28 This one doesn't have the optional low-ratio gearbox either.
27:31 So going downhill, I had to put the brakes on, which can mean locking an occasional wheel.
27:35 It does get a bit alarming, but we certainly got round unscathed.
27:39 Mind you, part of me was wondering, would I really want to take an estate car that costs between £32,000 and £36,000 off-road at all,
27:47 where the body could get all dinged and scratched?
27:50 Mind you, if you've got the money to pay for the car, you'd probably have the money to have all the blemishes taken out.
27:55 So, does this most compromised of cars actually work?
28:04 Well, it does manage to take all the best bits of the three cars that go to make it up, and none of the worst.
28:09 It does have decent off-road ability without being as big as your house and thirstier than you'd ever want to pay for.
28:14 It's certainly got practical estate car capabilities, but it doesn't look boring and bland. It looks great, in fact.
28:20 And yes, it's certainly a sports car, but it's not as small and pokey as most ordinary sports cars.
28:25 So, yes, it does work.
28:27 Right, I've got to go and collect my new combined hat stand, toothbrush and roller skate.
28:31 So I'll be off.
28:32 One of the hardest things for any manufacturer to do is to change their image as a brand,
28:37 but Audi have in recent years managed to do just that.
28:40 Gone are their days of being known for rather boring and staid cars.
28:44 Now they're known for offering a range of sporty cars that give practicality,
28:48 along with some of the highest levels of build quality.
28:51 But a small city car with four rings on the bonnet?
28:54 Well, we knew it had to be interesting, but would it be any good?
29:00 Best small car, the Audi A2.
29:03 It's only about two and a half years ago since this car was a concept at Frankfurt,
29:25 and like the TT, the production version has stayed pretty much the same as the concept version.
29:30 You couldn't honestly say it's got stunning looks to it, but I think the design probably grows on you.
29:35 What you do know you're going to get, though, is top-class build quality
29:39 and some sort of exclusivity, because Audi only intend to sell about two and a half thousand A2s every year in the UK.
29:46 If it seems odd that such a tiny car should grow on me so quickly,
29:53 take some consolation in that it hasn't grown on those people at Mercedes.
29:57 Because with this, Audi have delivered the most almighty kick in the teeth
30:01 to the Mercedes A-Class, their own little tiny city car.
30:05 Because this offers, again, build quality at the kind of level you'd expect in a car three or four times its size and price,
30:11 along with, for such a tiny, tiny frame, a surprising amount of space.
30:16 It's obviously mostly to do with the layout,
30:18 but the whole feeling of space is helped by a really simple, uncluttered and rather futuristic interior
30:24 and the use of those high-quality materials and excellent standards of fit and finish that reassure you.
30:29 You certainly don't feel you're sitting in a flimsy tin box. Far from it.
30:33 One of the problems in my job is constantly driving around in cars that just aren't me.
30:46 You see, today's Dream Deal is a great example of that.
30:49 I don't want anyone who sees me in it to think that the car's mine. It might seem odd.
30:54 You see, the car I'm driving today is fast, stylish, incredibly well-made,
31:01 but it just isn't me. Don't get me wrong. I love to pose.
31:06 In the right car. And sadly, this isn't it.
31:10 This beautiful Audi A4 convertible is more for Hurrah Henrys and Sarah Janes in Kensington
31:16 than for Brendan and Bob in Wigan and Bolton.
31:19 It's a kind of inverted snobbery. I don't want people to think I'm improperty.
31:23 I want people to think I'm cool.
31:26 Well, the car itself, of course, there's nothing wrong with it.
31:30 It's got definite TT styling cues with low, aggressive skirts at the front and on the side,
31:35 with panels that blend perfectly with the lines along the side.
31:39 The side elevation, well, that's the best view of this car.
31:43 Unusually for a convertible, it looks just as good with the roof up as it does with the roof down.
31:49 Beautifully proportioned and sexy, it'd be a match on the catwalk for any of the topless cars in its class.
31:57 Some cars are made to look aggressive. Some give the impression of speed, even if they don't deliver.
32:04 Well, this car just oozes sexy boutique chic, and that's the problem.
32:09 I don't do sexy boutique chic. In fact, it's hard to think of a car that says "overweight, slow and thick."
32:15 When people see me in this car, they just think I've borrowed it from me mum or me sister.
32:20 Anyway, enough of my chips on me shoulder. How does the car drive?
32:24 There is an old analogy that convertible cars are like a proverbial biscuit tin, only without the lid.
32:33 The lid gives the whole box rigidity.
32:36 Well, the chassis of the old A4 convertible was like a plate of blancmange, only not as stiff.
32:42 But Audi have been very busy in the 10 or 11 years since that previous car was launched,
32:50 because this car has got 21st century technology, giving it loads of rigidity and a chassis to match the huge 220bhp engine.
33:01 [engine revving]
33:03 [music]
33:08 And that 220bhp engine is a cracker.
33:14 Power comes from a 3.0-litre V6 30-valve engine, which gets this rather heavy beast from 0-60 in under 8 seconds,
33:22 on on to a top speed on a de-restricted autobahn, of course, of 150mph.
33:28 Now, there is a less powerful 2.4-litre engine in the range, and, would you believe it, a turbo-diesel version.
33:35 Can you imagine driving a convertible like this that's a diesel? The world is going mad.
33:41 Now, the engine note on this car isn't anywhere near as throaty as, say, the equivalent 3.0-litre 3-series BMW coupe convertible,
33:54 but that's a straight six. And anyway, this car is made for cruising rather than bruising,
33:59 and the drive isn't as engaging or as fun as that rear-wheel-drive BMW.
34:04 But the front drive on this Audi is predictably sure-footed and handles well, and it does just enough to keep a smile on your face.
34:20 Now, the automatic six-speed gearbox on this car is, quite frankly, remarkable.
34:26 I can't detect when it's changing gear. There is a semi-automatic option if you want to actually pin it down in gears,
34:33 and for hard driving, that's what you should use. But for cruising around, let the gearbox do its work.
34:38 It's really, I don't know, it's got an extra cog for each gear or something like that, and it's conical,
34:43 so that it's almost seamless changes. But the only time I can tell that it's changing gear
34:49 is when my rev counter goes down, and you think, "Oh, yeah, it changed gear then." It's incredible.
34:54 Now, Audi claim that this is a genuine four-seater, but one glance in the back tells you that that's clearly a huge pile of steaming horse manure.
35:06 There's room in there for a couple of teenagers at best, but it is worth having.
35:10 Just don't expect to get Joe Brand in there for anything other than a short journey.
35:15 Probably the cake-shopping back.
35:19 The ride and suspension of this car is perfectly placed for the kind of car it is.
35:25 Any harder, and you wouldn't have that lovely, cruisy feeling that this car gives you.
35:30 And any softer, and you'd be back to where the old car was.
35:33 No, this car's just right for those days in the country of topless driving.
35:39 And by that, I mean roof down, not, you know, with your bits out. You know what I mean?
35:45 [MUSIC]
36:00 But back to where I started. This car just isn't as cool as, say, the BMW 3 Series convertible.
36:06 And this car, cliche but true, and I'm sorry to say, it is a bit of a ladies' car.
36:11 But it is sexy, stylish, and good fun to drive. So just sit back, enjoy it, and forget what people are saying about you.
36:18 I'll see you back in Chelsea.
36:20 You ain't seen me, right?
36:23 And it is Sajid Pathan from Batley. Saj is 22 and a full-time student.
36:28 At the moment, he drives this very smart Golf 1.8 turbo.
36:32 But he's ready for a change, and has his eye on a few tasty morsels.
36:36 His budget of £25,000 to £30,000 will certainly buy him a classy car.
36:42 Hi, Saj. Nice to meet you.
36:43 Hi, how are you doing?
36:44 Thanks for coming on the program this week here on Used Car Heaven.
36:46 We'll look at these three beauties that we've lined up for you to drive.
36:49 An Audi S3, a BMW M3 convertible, and an Audi TT Roadster. 225 brake horsepower.
36:55 I mean, at the moment, you drive the Golf GTI.
36:57 Yeah, 1.8 turbo one. I'm fairly happy, but I want a quick change.
37:02 You're looking to move on?
37:03 Yeah.
37:04 How much money, most importantly, are you looking to spend?
37:06 My mum's giving me about 20k, but I'm trying to add an extra 10.
37:09 You're a lucky lad, eh?
37:10 So you've got a decent budget, up to £30,000 to spend.
37:14 Well, how about this one? An Audi TT Roadster.
37:17 Yeah, I'm just looking at it. It's really nice.
37:19 Smart car, isn't it? I mean, the style of it is fantastic, isn't it?
37:23 You've got all the power as well. You've got four-wheel drive.
37:26 The leather's interior.
37:27 Yeah, you name it. Everything on this car.
37:29 Fully loaded.
37:30 Fully loaded. It's at the upper end of that price range. £27,000 for this.
37:33 Oh, we're roughly there.
37:34 Come and have a look at the BMW M3 now.
37:37 As you can see, this is the oldest of the three cars. It's a few years old.
37:42 In fact, it's about seven years old. It's an M-Reg.
37:45 It's not an Evo.
37:46 So it's not as powerful.
37:48 It's the model below, isn't it?
37:49 It's the model below the Evo, but it's still got 280 brake horsepower.
37:52 RS looks a bit dated now, do you think?
37:55 A bit dated, but still attractive, though.
37:57 £18,000 for this car.
37:58 It's still a bit steep, I think.
37:59 Do you think it's a bit steep?
38:00 It's obviously the cheapest of the three that we've got for you.
38:03 But of course, it's soft top. It's in bright red.
38:06 Do you like bright red with black leather?
38:08 Ferrari red colour, isn't it?
38:09 Yeah? Does it work on a BMW, though?
38:12 Maybe. On some people, I think, isn't it?
38:14 Perhaps. So £18,000 for that.
38:17 You're beginning to think already it's a bit steep.
38:19 A bit steep, yeah.
38:20 Come and have a look at this gorgeous S3.
38:22 Now, I think you'll probably find this fairly similar to the Golf,
38:26 because essentially it's a Golf, but with an Audi badge on it.
38:29 Same chassis, same body and everything.
38:31 Absolutely. And a lot of the interior is the same as well.
38:34 Same sort of switchgear and things.
38:35 But of course, with the S3, you get the big wheels,
38:38 the flag wheel arches, the spoilers.
38:40 And faster.
38:41 Faster. A lot faster. I mean, 225bhp,
38:43 and your Golf is, what, 150, 180, something like that?
38:46 150bhp.
38:47 150bhp. So this is an awful lot more powerful.
38:49 Quattro four-wheel drive.
38:51 Price range, this kind of sits in the middle.
38:53 £23,000 for this.
38:55 My mum would be happy.
38:56 She would, wouldn't you? Would you be happy, though?
38:58 Yeah.
38:59 Listen, the most important thing is the way it drives.
39:02 Jump in there.
39:03 OK, but...
39:04 We'll take it out for a spin in a moment.
39:05 But before that, here's Brendan Coogan with more about the Audi S3.
39:08 Do you know what, Saj? Of all the cars you've got to decide from,
39:12 this is one that I'm most undecided about.
39:14 Now, it depends on whether you consider this as the real McCoy.
39:18 The Audi TT, that's a genuine roadster.
39:20 Whereas this, well, for me, it's mutton dressed as lamb.
39:23 It's an Audi A3.
39:24 Sure, we know it's a 225 brake horsepower Audi S3,
39:28 four-wheel drive, 0-60 in a bit over six seconds.
39:31 But, at the end of the day, it's a bit of a wretch car, isn't it?
39:35 But, like a surgically enhanced model,
39:38 this car has had nips, tucks and implants in all the right places.
39:42 And the end product is a really quite beautiful car.
39:44 Knew this car would set you back 26 grand.
39:47 This is about a year old, so it's about 24.
39:49 But you could get a 99 plate on a T for about £17,000.
39:53 Saj, good value. Over to you.
39:56 Thanks very much, Brendan.
39:57 Well, we're in the Audi S3 now, Saj.
39:59 What do you reckon to this car? Can you feel the power?
40:01 I can feel the power underneath my foot. It's amazing.
40:04 You've got 225 brake horsepower.
40:06 Of course, you've got quattro four-wheel drive.
40:09 So, it's going to be very secure on the road.
40:11 I mean, does it feel a lot different to the Golf?
40:14 By miles.
40:16 Yeah?
40:17 You can tell.
40:18 I mean, bearing in mind that, essentially, this is a Golf.
40:20 You know, the A3, the S3.
40:22 It's all shares the same sort of running gear, the same floor plan.
40:25 And a lot of the interior is fairly similar as well, isn't it?
40:28 The interior is very nice, actually.
40:30 Yeah. And, of course, it's the top of the range.
40:32 Top of the range.
40:33 A3, the S3.
40:34 So, you get just about everything on it.
40:36 You've got these fantastic Recaro seats,
40:38 full leather, Bose sound system, climate control, AC.
40:44 I mean, what is it that you're really looking for in your new car?
40:47 What are the sort of the main features that you would want on it?
40:50 I'm looking for a sporty type.
40:52 Yeah.
40:53 A car that's got power.
40:54 Yeah.
40:55 And, obviously, looks.
40:56 And the looks. Do you think--
40:57 Because it attracts people just looking at it, isn't it?
40:59 I think this S3 has got the looks.
41:01 It's got the looks, the power's at six speed.
41:03 Six speed gearbox.
41:04 Can't go wrong.
41:05 Yeah. 225 brake horsepower.
41:07 You can race anyone on traffic lights.
41:09 I mean, every gear, you've just got power.
41:11 You can feel the power.
41:12 Even to the third or fourth gear.
41:14 It pulls very low down, doesn't it?
41:15 Yeah.
41:16 The Audi S3 has a cracking, straight-four 1.8-litre engine
41:19 producing 225 brake horsepower.
41:22 It's a quick car, too. 0-60 in 6.4 seconds.
41:25 Top speed of 145 miles an hour.
41:28 But it's high on the insurance, Group 17.
41:30 They came out on a '99 T-Plate and continue to the present day.
41:34 And these are the sort of prices you could pay for one.
41:37 A W-Reg Quattro, 53,000 miles for 16,995.
41:42 Or a later car on an O2 Reg, 25,000 miles for just under 25 grand.
41:48 Now, for the past few years, the luxury car sector
41:51 has been dominated by the likes of Jaguar, BMW with their 7 Series,
41:55 Mercedes with the S-Class, and Toyota with the Lexus.
41:59 But one car which should also be in that list is Audi's A8,
42:03 a car that has that perceived rarity value
42:05 because you see so few of them on the road
42:08 and still has that ability to turn heads.
42:12 Now, the A8 has been around for nearly four years now,
42:15 and personally, I think it's a gorgeous-looking car.
42:18 And there's one thing that Audi engineers and designers are very good at,
42:22 and that's coming up with hot versions of their cars.
42:25 There was the S2, the S4, and the S6.
42:28 Well, now, Audi engineers have gone back,
42:30 looking through their desk drawers at headquarters
42:32 for that letter from the magical Audi alphabet, the letter S.
42:36 And this is what they've come up with, the S8.
42:40 Now, up till now, the A8 range has consisted of a six-cylinder 2.8-litre engine
42:46 and V8 3.7 and 4.2-litre engines.
42:50 Well, now, the S8 ups the stake considerably,
42:53 especially in the power department.
42:54 The S8 gets a whopping 340 brake horsepower engine,
42:58 as well as being linked to that quattro four-wheel drive system,
43:01 Tiptronic gearbox, and the sports suspension.
43:05 Now, everything is pretty much standard on the S8,
43:08 as you would come to expect on this sort of car.
43:10 You get climate control, there's a superb sound system,
43:13 and you get satellite navigation as well.
43:15 Although you don't get the conventional system we've seen before with a TV screen.
43:19 Instead, you get a little display on the dashboard which tells you the route.
43:23 One other great idea, though, is this.
43:29 The solar sunroof.
43:31 Now, what the solar sunroof does is there are solar panels in the sunroof,
43:35 top of the sunroof here, and on a hot day when the sun is shining,
43:38 energy is stored up in those panels,
43:41 which then, when you're away from the vehicle,
43:43 the energy from those panels allows the climate control system to carry on working
43:47 whilst you're away from the vehicle.
43:49 It's absolutely amazing.
43:55 Now, the main rival for the S8 is Jaguar's XJR V8,
43:59 but the Audi wins hands down in terms of accommodation,
44:03 both for passengers and in terms of boot space.
44:08 Now, where Jaguar always claim that you can fit two sets of golf clubs
44:11 in the rear of their cars, with the Audi, you can get the 18th green in as well.
44:16 So, what's the S8 like on the road, and how does it drive?
44:20 Well, it's a bit of a challenge.
44:22 So, what's the S8 like on the road, and how does it drive?
44:27 Well, let's see, shall we? And enjoy.
44:30 The A8 really is a radical car in design and concept.
44:39 The body is all aluminium, or should that be aluminium,
44:43 like the guy in the TV ad calls it,
44:45 and the Audi space frame is unique too.
44:48 The car is packed with safety features, front airbags, four side airbags,
44:53 ABS and ventilated disc brakes, plus EDL, which is a traction control system,
44:58 and of course, not forgetting the quattro drive system,
45:01 which makes this car so sure-footed on the road.
45:04 The use of aluminium in car production has a very positive effect on environmental pollution,
45:11 and that means that 90% of the aluminium in this car can be recycled,
45:16 and that also makes the car a lot lighter, which helps tremendously with fuel consumption.
45:22 This S8 will return around 27 to the gallon at a steady 75 miles per hour,
45:28 which is excellent for a 4.2 litre and a V8.
45:32 So, what's it really like to drive?
45:35 Well, you put your foot down and the power just keeps coming and coming and coming.
45:39 It's a very, very fast car indeed.
45:41 In fact, you have to be so careful because you soon find yourself going far too fast.
45:45 The suspension is very good. It's a sport suspension on the S8,
45:49 and it's firm but very comfortable ride,
45:52 and also the suspension has been lowered by 20 millimetres,
45:55 as well as firm anti-roll bars to reduce the body movement.
45:59 For such a big vehicle, it has all the feel of a thoroughbred sports car.
46:06 Handling is excellent, the brakes will certainly stop you,
46:09 although I did find that there was a bit of softness in the start of the brake pedal,
46:13 but once your foot goes down, don't worry, you'll stop okay.
46:16 It is a very fast car though, 0-60 in just over 6 seconds,
46:20 top speed limited to 155 miles per hour,
46:24 and for me, you couldn't find a nicer way of getting from A to B
46:28 and doing it in style, comfort and with speed.
46:40 So, what is the main competition for the Audi S8?
46:43 Well, really, the only other large sporting saloon on the market is the Jaguar XJR V8,
46:49 and that's had a tremendous amount of acclaim, and rightly so,
46:52 but for me, I really, really like this car. I've grown to love it over the past few days.
46:56 And I think also the fact that you don't see many A8s out on the road,
47:00 that adds to its exclusivity.
47:02 I mean, let's face it, in some areas of the country,
47:04 BMWs, Jaguars and Mercedes are almost ten a penny.
47:08 So, what will an S8 cost you?
47:11 Well, £7,000 more than the 4.2 Quattro Sport
47:15 and over £10,000 more than the Jaguar XJR.
47:19 So if you want one, get out your chequebook and write £62,000 in that little box,
47:26 and an S8 will be yours, and believe me, you won't be disappointed.
47:34 Not so very many years ago, something like this would have been enough
47:38 to set company car driver man drooling down his polyester tie.
47:42 I mean, it's got everything you could possibly need for middle management, middle lane credibility.
47:50 Prestige badge at the front, Audi, very respectable.
47:53 Alloy wheels, flesh, and most importantly of all,
47:57 a seriously big number on the tailgate, 4.2 litres.
48:02 It's a V8, no less. 300bhp.
48:05 Thank you very much, Mr. Fleet Car Manager. Have a round of golf on me.
48:10 Seriously, that was all that mattered, to heck with how the thing handled or drove,
48:26 or what it had on board, or how safe it was.
48:28 All I need is a big number on the back, ideally followed by the letter I.
48:33 But my head things have changed, mostly thanks to company car taxation,
48:53 because with the new changing of the rulings, having a large engine car
48:56 will mean you could probably pay three times more for your car every year
48:59 than you do for your house, and you don't even own it.
49:02 So I'm sorry, my luxurious V8 engine chum, you've got to go.
49:09 What I need is something a little less powerful.
49:12 Something that Audi must have had in mind when they fitted their newly revised A6
49:18 with a range of nine different engines, which means there should be one to suit
49:22 the corporate pocket and even the most lowly of lower management.
49:25 But it's not just under the bonnet that they've made changes.
49:27 Just because it's a company car doesn't mean it doesn't have to look pretty.
49:30 This repeat of the grille above and below the bumper was previously reserved
49:36 only for the super sporty S6, but it's now available on all A6,
49:40 and it does make it look a bit more aggressive and sporty.
49:43 There are no major changes along the side, apart from revisions to the protective strip
49:48 and thicker glass in the side windows.
49:50 You can't see it, but it does keep the wind noise down when you're inside.
49:53 At the back we get new tail lamps and more importantly,
49:56 the division between the painted and the unpainted part of the bumper
49:59 has been dropped by a mere 5cm.
50:02 It may not sound like much, but it does change the look of it quite a lot.
50:05 In fact, there are really very few cars that can offer the Audi A6's combination
50:12 of good looks, practicality, longevity and sheer style.
50:16 That engine range covers just about everything.
50:20 There's a fairly bulk standard 2.0-litre petrol with 130bhp.
50:23 You'll get 150bhp from the rather busier 1.8-litre turbo engine.
50:27 Fancy upping the stakes even further, there's a 3.0-litre V6.
50:31 You can go completely barmy of course and have the 4.2-litre V8.
50:35 Diesel engines are covered fairly thoroughly, including the 2.5-litre TDI that I've chosen today.
50:40 As a drive, the CVT system allows the car to take advantage of the turbo diesel's torque characteristics,
50:47 so you get a very torquey, easy, chuggy drive.
50:50 You don't really need revs, you don't need to think about it, just press and go.
50:54 It is still a very competent car.
