00:00 Welcome to Men and Motors and welcome to my review of the VW ID.Buzz, which has to be
00:07 one of the best pieces of design to come out of VW Group for years. I sincerely mean that.
00:13 This thing is a stunningly well designed car. It really blends that sort of retro and modern
00:19 styling in a way that just sort of hits the nail on the head. It's got enough of a tip
00:24 of the hat to the old VW camper, but somehow it feels very fresh and very modern and in
00:30 no way does it feel naff. And it must also be one of the most deceptive cars on the market
00:36 because it looks huge. And guess what? What if I told you this is actually shorter than
00:43 the Tesla Model Y? Would you believe me? Well, it is. This is the short wheelbase IDBuzz
00:49 style that I've got today. It's the 77 kilowatt hour pro version with 204 PS of power. It
00:57 should be around about 51 grand, but the one I've got today is actually closer to £62,000
01:03 because it's very well specced. For that, you get 255 miles of range WLTP, a 0-62 time
01:10 of 10.2 seconds and 310 newton meters of torque. In the front cabin here, it's massively spacious.
01:16 I've got this little cup holder down here, which if you don't want to use, you can just
01:21 fold out of the way and you could actually fit a lot more luggage in between passenger
01:25 and driver. We've also got this sort of movable and removable centre console, some lovely
01:31 comfy armrests. You've got another cup holder in there, by the way, I should add. Clever
01:35 little nook that doubles up as a wireless charging pad for your phone. Great actually,
01:39 because it means you're not distracted by the phone down here lighting up or anything.
01:43 So very clever, well thought out solution. You've also got two USB-C sockets there. The
01:48 infotainment system. Now, the VW infotainment system, the current generation MIB platform
01:54 is much maligned. Certainly the one that came out in things like the first gen ID.3 has
01:59 had no end of problems. VW have been good at releasing updates. They've released plenty
02:04 of them, but there are still one or two issues. This is better than that. It is an upgraded
02:10 system. This is what you'll find in sort of the newer VW range. And to be fair, it works
02:16 very well most of the time. I've only had the car for a short period of time. I haven't
02:21 experienced any issues with this. We've still got haptics for volume, haptics for the heating,
02:26 which is a bit rubbish in fairness. Just give us a little dial, folks. It's all we ever
02:30 want. Please, VW, bring back the dial. And we've also now got haptics on the steering
02:36 wheel. I used to love the little physical rolly dials on the steering wheels in VW Group
02:42 cars. Bring them back, please. We love them. Although I have to say, voice commands in
02:46 this car are as good as in any vehicle I've ever tested. They're very accurate, very quick,
02:52 no issues at all. Now, aside from its potential flaws, the screen's actually very crisp, very
02:57 clear, very large in this model. Nice, bright, vivid colours. No issues with it. Apple CarPlay
03:03 is great. It's wireless. There's lots of screen real estate, so your CarPlay experience should
03:08 be a very good one. As for the steering wheel itself, despite the fact that it's got haptics
03:13 and not physical buttons, which I don't like, it actually feels really nice under the hand.
03:19 Nice shape, nice feel, very comfortable. Very crisp, clear little information display here.
03:26 It's a little bit minimalist, maybe a little bit small, but it's got absolutely everything
03:30 you need, so can't grumble, really. An interesting mix of materials have been used. They don't
03:35 feel absolute premium quality, but they feel better than in a lot of interiors in recent
03:41 VWs, it has to be said. This is a very well-designed cabin that someone's put a lot of thought
03:46 and energy into, and it's paid off. I like it. So in the back, it's glorious. We've got
03:52 three proper-sized seats. The middle seat's perhaps a hair smaller than the two outer
03:58 seats, but you'll comfortably get three adults in here on a long journey. In fact, you'd
04:03 probably get three child seats in here as well. It's that wide, completely flat floor,
04:10 and acres of legroom. I mean, look at that. That's huge. And that high roofline means
04:17 you've got plenty of headroom, and it feels really bright and airy in here, despite having
04:21 privacy glass in the rear. A real touch of genius is they've put USB-Cs in the door here,
04:28 so instead of having cables down here, which eventually get kicked and your USB socket
04:32 gets destroyed, it's in the door. You can plug your phone into it, sit here like this.
04:37 When you finish using your phone, you can plonk it in this little cubby here, or in
04:41 one of the sizable door bins. Absolutely everyone's happy. It works brilliantly well. On the back
04:47 of the seat, you've got a little pocket here, a bigger pocket here, so you can easily pop
04:51 your gadgets and wallets and things like that away safely. Also got these very useful little
04:55 tray tables, which should keep the little ones happy if they've got a few snacks or
04:59 a game or something, and a little cup holder in that. They don't feel like the sturdiest
05:03 things in the world, but they also don't feel like they're going to break as soon as Junior
05:08 gives it a thwack. I can't think of another EV on the market at the moment with a better
05:13 rear cabin for transporting passengers and things than this right now. This is fantastic.
05:20 Not only is that rear cabin a lovely place for your passengers to spend their time, it's
05:25 actually really easy to get in and out from tight spaces as well, thanks to these sliding
05:29 doors. I mean, just couldn't be easier, could it? They're really nicely weighted as well,
05:35 a real feel of quality in them, and they close with a reassuring thunk. Now, with all the
05:42 seats up, you get an epic 1121 litres of load space in the ID.Buzz. Got some very clever
05:49 little features in here as well. Firstly, we've got a very handy little bag hook, a
05:55 12-volt socket there, and a switch here just to drop that rear row of seats. But look at
06:00 this. You've got a very useful, very practical sort of divider, so you can pop your luggage
06:06 in here or your shopping, whatever it may be, stop it rolling around everywhere, and
06:11 gain access to these very useful storage bins. Here we've got the charging cables, first
06:17 aid kit, and that kind of stuff. Really well designed, really well thought out, and it
06:22 will serve you and your family well. And when it comes to all-round practicality for a car
06:26 of its size, this is head and shoulders above the competition. Now, once you get out on
06:32 the road, you're just immediately surprised by this car. Now, the driving position is
06:38 very high. Obviously, it feels van-like, you know, you're really sitting high up, you've
06:43 got a great view of the road, lots of glass, huge windscreen, these big kind of side windows
06:49 here letting loads of light, great visibility all round. And you've got brilliant rear visibility
06:55 as well, which so many cars don't have these days. Quite often, the screen in a lot of
07:00 cars is raked so much that you end up with like a letterbox when you look in the rear
07:06 view mirror. This doesn't. It's got a big sort of slab-sided back and a huge piece of
07:11 glass, which really benefits the driver. The great surprise is because you sit so high
07:17 up and this is such a tall vehicle, you expect it to be very boaty in the corners. You expect
07:24 it to be a little bit sluggish, a little bit hard to handle. You expect to sort of tug
07:30 it round the bends a bit. There's none of that. It's very car-like. This is a bloody
07:37 good thing to drive. It really is. This would soak up those long motorway journeys with
07:43 the wife and the kids and the dog and everyone on board. An ideal family tourer. If you and
07:51 your family regularly do big sort of UK or European road trips, this thing will eat them
07:57 up. The suspension's nice. It's very comfortable. It's nice and airy. There's plenty of connectivity.
08:04 You can spend a lot of time in close proximity to one another while still feeling that you've
08:09 got lots of space. I just cannot get over how well designed this vehicle is. I think
08:15 when a lot of people think about design, they just think of the aesthetic side of it. It's
08:19 just how does something look. To me, more important than how it looks is how it works
08:25 in practice and how it makes you feel. And this really ticks those boxes for me. But
08:30 then if we go back to that most basic part of design, how does it look? I think it looks
08:35 mega too. When you think about it these days, hardly anyone makes a proper MPV. Companies
08:42 have just stopped. I think everyone wants an SUV. VW obviously makes plenty of SUVs,
08:48 but I think it's great that they brought this out when they did, because for many families,
08:52 the practicality of an MPV is what they need, and it just can't be matched by any kind of
08:58 SUV. And I think this is filling a gap in the market, particularly as it's an EV, because
09:04 it doesn't really have a great deal of competition at the moment, does it, folks? In summary,
09:09 this is the world's lightest three-ton car. It feels really light, really nimble, great
09:14 to drive, massively comfortable, hugely practical. Maybe a little bit more range would have been
09:22 nice. For me, it's a bit disappointing that you can't remove those rear seats because
09:26 this could then double up as a van, and it would take what's already one of the most
09:31 practical cars on the market to the next level, really. It's also got that infotainment system,
09:37 which although much improved, it's still not quite perfect, and a lot of car manufacturers
09:43 could learn the same lesson as VW could learn here, and it's that people like twiddly knobs
09:48 and dials. There you go. It's as simple as that. And although 255 miles of range is competitive,
09:55 a car like this is going to be used as a touring vehicle quite often, so it would be very nice
10:00 to see that over the 300-mile mark. Aside from that, it's brilliant. I absolutely love
10:08 this. It really has hit the nail on the head in terms of what the target audience is looking
10:14 for and what it delivers. You know, you'd think a big, high-sided vehicle like this
10:19 would be very boaty, very sluggish. There's none of it. I think because we've got all
10:23 that battery weight down here, it really balances things out, and it's surprisingly good to
10:29 drive. I think it's a brilliant vehicle, extremely well executed, and extremely well designed.
