00:00 When a woman is pregnant, her brain undergoes many changes that prepare her for childbirth.
00:06 And the part of her brain responsible for the social signals decreases.
00:10 This makes the brain more efficient to take care of the baby.
00:14 But don't worry, it doesn't stay that way.
00:17 It returns to its standard size after pregnancy.
00:21 In one day, your body produces one liter of saliva.
00:25 This represents about 303 liters per year.
00:29 And in one life, you can fill two Olympic pools with saliva.
00:33 Imagine swimming in it.
00:35 Burk, it's both disturbing and disgusting.
00:38 Humans have a secret superpower hidden in our stomachs.
00:43 Our gastric acid.
00:45 It has a pH of about 1, and it is one of the most acidic substances in the world.
00:49 It is so powerful that it can dissolve metals.
00:52 And the stomach must develop a special protective mucus to prevent your whole body from dissolving.
00:58 But don't try to eat metals.
01:00 They can be toxic.
01:02 If you take a deep breath, your left lung will be filled with much less air than your right lung because it is smaller.
01:10 Your heart takes up a lot of space, so the left lung must make room for it.
01:14 The lungs are divided into lobes.
01:16 The right has three, and the left lung has only two lobes.
01:20 Your lungs are not the only organs that are not proportional in size.
01:24 Your kidneys are also a little different.
01:27 The left kidney is generally a little bigger than the right kidney.
01:30 If you've ever wondered what their size is, your kidneys are the size of a fist.
01:35 Everyone knows that sharks have strong teeth, but the outer layer of our teeth, called the enamel, is as strong as the one that covers the shark's teeth.
01:44 Enamel is also the strongest substance in the body.
01:48 It protects our teeth from all kinds of damage so that you can eat your favorite food in peace.
01:56 Toothpicks grow twice as slowly as fingernails.
02:00 And if there was an Olympic sport that determined which nail grew the fastest, your little finger nail would always come last, because it is the nail that grows the slowest of all.
02:11 The reason is that some fingers are not used as much as others and do not have as much blood supply.
02:17 There are strange animals, such as shrimp and crabs, that lose their skeletons to grow.
02:24 Don't be shocked to learn that we do the same thing.
02:27 We don't literally drop our skeleton, of course, but we slowly regenerate a new one every 10 years.
02:33 Thus, over our lifetime, we will change our skeleton about 8 times.
02:38 Many years ago, we were like reptiles, like the evil Spider-Man lizard.
02:43 Fortunately, we have evolved and lost almost all of our reptilian characteristics, except for the third vestigial eyelid, which is partially visible at the end of your eye near your nose.
02:53 Reptiles always have it. It is used to protect and clean the eye.
02:58 If you have a polychoria, your eye can develop more than one pupil. Unfortunately, this will not improve your vision.
03:05 In fact, it can worsen it, but in most cases, it will not affect your vision much.
03:10 This condition is extremely rare and usually starts in childhood, but it can also develop later in life.
03:17 Dermatography is a generally harmless condition that allows you to write almost literally on your skin.
03:23 People with this condition do not need a notebook to take notes.
03:27 If you have this condition and you scratch your skin slightly, the redness can last half an hour.
03:33 This could be useful for your next exam, if you see what I mean.
03:37 Another unique condition that some people have is syndactyly, or palmed toes.
03:43 It's when your toes are fused together. No one knows what causes this, but it's not serious.
03:50 Did you know that your tongue is as unique as your fingerprints? Me neither.
03:55 The tongue has special shapes and geometric figures, like fingerprints, which differ from one person to another.
04:02 Who knows, maybe we'll unlock our phones by licking them in the future.
04:07 An adult is made up of about 7 octillions of atoms. It seems unreal, but it's true.
04:13 This number is so large that I can't even say it in one breath. It's 7, followed by 27 zeros.
04:20 The ear wax looks like wax, has the texture of wax, and tastes like...
04:26 Of course, I have no idea what it tastes like, and I beg you not to try to discover it.
04:31 My point is that it's not really wax. It's a combination of fat, skin cells, dirt and sweat.
04:37 It's important for the health of the ears, because it keeps them clean.
04:42 Book by book, bones are much more solid than steel. The same bone density will almost always outweigh steel.
04:51 But if you compare the same volume of bone and steel, the bone will break before the steel.
04:57 Bones are made to be light and solid. If they were made of steel, we would be much heavier and would need a lot more energy to move.
05:05 When you were born, you had more water than now because most of them merged.
05:10 An adult person has 206 bones, while babies have 300 bones. Some of these bones are made of cartilage, which is flexible and soft.
05:20 The strongest, heaviest and longest bone is the femur. This bone is the most difficult to break.
05:27 It can support up to 30 times the weight of your body, or about 2721 kg.
05:32 Technically, you could balance two small cars on your femur and remain indifferent.
05:38 Bioluminescence is a talent that some animals have, such as the angelfish, the lucioles, the lantern fish and humans.
05:46 And yes, you really shine in the dark. Scientists have discovered that we shine.
05:51 But the sparkle is a thousand times weaker than what our eyes can detect.
05:55 You can see your own light if you have an ultra-sensitive camera.
05:59 The amount of melanin you have in your eyes determines their color.
06:04 Brown eyes contain the largest amount of melanin, while blue eyes have much less.
06:09 However, people with heterochromia may have different eye colors.
06:14 One eye can be blue and the other brown, or any other color, which is cool.
06:19 Sometimes, only half of the eye can be of a different color.
06:23 When you blink, the air coming out of your nose and mouth can reach nearly 161 km/h.
06:29 We blink because an irritant penetrates the nose, and the body blinks to eliminate it.
06:34 And if you've heard that your eyes can leave their orbit if you blink without closing them, it's a lie.
06:40 Nothing will happen.
06:42 The heart is the only muscle that works 24/7.
06:47 It beats more than 3 billion times in a person's life, and pumps about 9500 liters of vital fluid every day.
06:54 So you should take care of it, because it works very hard.
06:58 Your osteoarthritis is actually not a bone, but a nerve.
07:02 That's why when you hit it, you feel like a thousand ants are crawling under your skin.
07:07 This nerve is quite long. It starts in the spine and ends in your ear and your ring finger.
07:14 Almost all of us have heard that our noses and ears never stop growing.
07:19 Well, that's not really true.
07:21 Our noses and ears stop growing when we become teenagers, but they get bigger as we age, because gravity attracts them.
07:28 So they really stretch.
07:30 They don't grow.
07:31 When you don't sleep enough, the brain can really start devouring itself.
07:36 13 protected neurons are destroyed when you don't get a good night's sleep.
07:40 It's a lot of brain power to lose.
07:43 Instead of finishing this episode of your favorite show, go to bed.
07:46 It's not worth it.
07:48 When you are well rested and you have slept enough, your brain can generate electricity to power a light bulb.
07:55 And your neurons can send more messages than all the phones in the world combined.
07:59 They move at a speed of about 241 km/h and the signals transported by your motor neurons can move twice as fast.
