00:00 (dramatic music)
00:02 - So we started this election with a trip
00:06 to Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore,
00:09 and why we selected Coimbatore is also because of the fact
00:12 that BJP's state president, K. Anna Malai,
00:15 is contesting from Coimbatore.
00:17 There's a lot of social media noise,
00:19 especially in the northern side, which is North India,
00:21 about Anna Malai winning more than 60% of the vote share,
00:25 which looks very kind of impossible
00:27 when you go to the ground,
00:28 because the ground is kind of, as I said,
00:32 you know, as I've always meant it,
00:33 the ground gives you the real perspective.
00:36 So we chose Coimbatore because BJP
00:40 has put all its might over there.
00:42 There was a rally by Modi, I think, in March,
00:44 where he took his roadshow on the same street
00:48 where 1998 serial blasts had occurred in Coimbatore.
00:53 Now, if you look back,
00:55 Coimbatore has a history of communal violence
00:57 starting from the 1980s.
00:58 A lot of people on the ground told us
01:00 that they wanted to forget this.
01:02 This was a dark chapter in the history of Coimbatore,
01:06 but it seems like the BJP wanted to rig this up,
01:11 and Modi also paid homage to the victims of the bomb blast
01:16 at the end of the roadshow.
01:17 On that front, the BJP has made its entry
01:20 very, very visible in terms of
01:22 what they are going to do in Tamil Nadu.
01:24 They are also trying to reach out to the tribals
01:27 in Tamil Nadu.
01:29 One of the meetings we went to
01:31 involved the Baraga community,
01:33 which has been fighting for tribal status since 1951.
01:37 So there are a lot of interesting things
01:38 that are there on the ground.
01:40 The DMK and the AIDMK both have very interesting candidates.
01:43 The DMK candidate is the former mayor of Coimbatore,
01:48 and the AIDMK candidate is also an IIM graduate,
01:53 and Coimbatore has also been an AIDMK stronghold,
01:56 at least in the Vidhan Sabha seats.
01:59 They have six constituencies over there,
02:01 but it has been a left stronghold.
02:04 So there's a lot of these ideologies at play in Coimbatore,
02:06 and that's what we thought for us.
02:09 How do we define Coimbatore at this point in time
02:13 in the context of general elections?
02:15 So the two core ideologies at play are Hindutva
02:18 and the Dravidian ideology,
02:19 and for 60 years, the DMK and the AIDMK
02:22 have held Tamil Nadu, which is the state
02:26 which means a lot to the BJP in terms of symbolism,
02:30 and Tamil Nadu has 39 seats,
02:32 but for us, the story of Tamil Nadu lies in Coimbatore.
02:36 So stay tuned for more ground reportage from our reporters
02:40 who are going to go to different, different places,
02:42 connecting the larger ideas to local issues,
02:45 and kind of telling you very, very interesting stories
02:48 with a lot of perspective, and that's what Outlook does.
