00:00 I, Adele Wyman, being the returning officer at the above election, do hereby give notice
00:05 that the number of votes recorded for each candidate at the said election is as follows.
00:09 McElhinney William James Patrick, Conservative Party candidate, 1485.
00:16 Stephenson Olivia, Green Party, 368.
00:23 Todd Richard, Labour Party, 1054. Window Alan James, Liberal Democrat, 234.
00:32 The number of ballot papers rejected was as follows. Voting for more candidates than the
00:37 voter was entitled to, 2. And being unmarked or wholly void for uncertainty, 10. So there
00:43 was 12 rejected in total. And I do hereby declare that McElhinney William James Patrick,
00:50 also known as Bill McElhinney, is duly elected. Thanks very much.
00:54 Well it's absolutely fantastic isn't it that our candidates won. You know, the people of
01:05 Descartes have come out and gone to the polling stations and have endorsed the Conservative
01:11 candidates by considerable amounts. So we're very pleased about that.
01:16 It was quite a reduced majority. Do you think Labour are going to make ground for the general
01:22 election? I think very unlikely, if I'm being honest. I think today is a good result for the
01:28 Conservatives. It was a good turnout and we won with a reasonable sized majority over the
01:36 Labour candidates. Across this campaign on the doorstep we've had conversations with people in
01:43 parts of the Desmond Ward and one thing that came up is that they're obsessed with the Tories.
01:48 When it comes to a general election they're considering Labour as a real option on the
01:52 ballot paper. We might not have won today but to see this big a swing in one of the most rural
01:58 wards in our constituency gives us a really good hope going into the general election this year.
