Jane Omorogbe a.k.a RIO presents Car Crazy Rio!

This Show looks at just why people are crazy about our four-wheel buddies. Jane, an ex-gladiator starts off with lessons from Terry Bolton about how to handle a skid with both front and rear wheel cars.

Later in the show, we're off to the racing track, the new racing track that is ROCKINGHAM. Plus it's time to try a hand at go-karting with some special instruction and some nasty corners!

00:23 Hello and welcome to Car Crazy Rio, the show that brings you car events and car extremists from all across the country.
00:35 Each week our ex-Gladiator, Jane Ormoroby, reminds us just how crazy people are about our four-wheeled friends.

01:37 This week on the show, Rio travels to London as she tries to get to grips on the skid pan.
01:47 And we see if driving a kart can lead to a speedy success.
02:00 I'm here in sunny Croydon to learn how to drive, but as you can see, it's not normal driving.
02:12 The object of a skid pan like this is to learn how to control a car when you begin to slide.
02:17 I'll be trying out both front and rear wheel drive cars, and Terry Bolton is the brave man who will be training me today.
02:24 He assures me everything will be fine as he does this every day.
02:31 So Terry, this is the first car we're going to be driving today.
02:34 Yes, this is our front wheel drive car given to us by Dayu. It's a Dayu Lanas.
02:38 It's got all the modern cons on this one. It's very good. It's got power steering, electric windows, etc. etc.
02:43 But it won't be much help for you today because we're going to have them all up and it's a very hot day.
02:47 It's got slick tyres on it, and it's a front wheel drive because a front wheel drive car reacts differently to a rear wheel drive car.
02:53 We're going to start off in this car first, get the feel of how it works, just potter around in second gear.
02:59 And as you get a little bit more confident, then you can start to squeeze on the gas and you can feel the car starting to slip and slide.
03:05 Right. Let's go and have a bit of fun.
03:08 Enjoy.
03:10 [Music]
03:13 And all we do is have a little drive around, off gas now, as you're ready.
03:27 [Laughter]
03:28 Keep it tight in towards the left hand side.
03:31 And shuffle the wheel.
03:32 And if you can use your hands opposite one another, because as you can see, already clutch down and gently brake to stop.
03:38 It's coming through that quickly.
03:40 [Laughter]
03:41 So this is the front wheel drive car.
03:47 This is our front wheel drive car.
03:48 And it's going to be a little different than the rear one.
03:50 It is because in a front wheel drive car, the front wheels tend to break away.
03:54 And once they start to break away, we will go off in a straight line when in fact we either want to turn left or right.
03:59 And of course the way out of that is to remove the... Oh dear, we've gone again.
04:03 So why did that happen? Am I going too fast?
04:05 I think you may have been listening to me and not concentrating.
04:08 A skid or slide is caused through three things.
04:15 Excessive acceleration, braking, steering or a combination of all three, all caused by you, the driver.
04:21 Oh I see. So when I jerk it back in, then it just skids around.
04:26 There's your core steering.
04:27 Everything nice and smooth and gentle. That's it. That's fine.
04:34 So it's good to see you starting to feed the steering wheel through the hands.
04:37 That's much, much better.
04:39 Because if you put your arms over and over like that...
04:42 Like so?
04:43 What you're doing, you're only using the top quarter of the steering wheel.
04:45 And your hands are always one side or your hands are always one at the other.
04:48 And if you need extra steering, the hand has to come off and move.
04:51 And it takes that a little bit longer.
04:53 Watch this, Terry.
04:59 You go for it.
05:00 Everything you've just taught me is going to come into play right now.
05:04 [Music]
05:06 Gently on the gas. That's it. And hold it.
05:13 See?
05:14 I'm impressed.
05:15 Full lap!
05:16 360 degrees worth.
05:18 That was the first car. Great fun. Now it's time for car number two.
05:29 Jane, this is our rear-wheel-drive car.
05:31 It has different characteristics from the front-wheel-drive car that you've just been using.
05:35 Because obviously this is driven from the rear, where the other vehicle is being pulled along from the front.
05:40 And as you drive it, you'll realise that as soon as you start to use a little bit of gas, the back is going to want to break away.
05:45 This is a lot harder than I thought. Maybe I just got used to the other cars.
05:51 This is a lot twitchier than the back.
05:53 Just head for it.
05:55 A bit of second now so we can have a look at the speed.
05:59 I thought I was getting the hang of it.
06:02 That's what I mean. Different car, different characteristics.
06:05 In we come.
06:06 Brake hard now. Hard on the brakes hard.
06:09 That's it.
06:10 And as you can see, the back overtakes the front.
06:13 That's because of the camber of the road.
06:15 So if you come in in the middle of the path this time, head towards the side of the road.
06:23 As we are now, this speed, brake now, bang, bang, bang.
06:25 Hard on the brakes. Keep doing that.
06:27 Excellent. Well done.
06:28 That's good.
06:29 Considering that is the first time you've ever done it, that was very, very good indeed.
06:34 That was very good.
06:35 Yes, I hate to say, you were very good.
06:37 I thought I was doing really well until...
06:47 Oh.
06:48 Oh yeah, and...
06:49 Oh, and that was...
06:51 Oops.
06:54 [Music]
06:58 [Music]
07:23 So Stephen, can you tell us a bit of history about the track and how the weekend's gone for you?
07:27 Well, it's been a really very special weekend.
07:30 We've had the official opening of the track after two years, over two years of actually building it.
07:35 And the best part of ten years since we started planning it and going through the fundraising and everything else.
07:41 So it's been a big, big day for a lot of people.
07:43 Of course, this, the opening event with Nigel Mansell here on the Saturday was something very special indeed.
07:49 Perhaps the biggest party we're going to see around here for some time.
07:52 With Nigel turning in that amazing 163 miles an hour average speed lap.
07:56 And that was corners and all, 163 miles an hour.
07:59 Fastest ever lap of a racing circuit in Great Britain.
08:01 That's amazing. And on an open day as well.
08:03 Oh, that's it. Nigel, as always, performing for the fans.
08:07 And he was an absolute star.
08:08 Fantastic.
08:09 And that record, I'm sure, is going to go by September though, when we get the champ cars here.
08:13 This is the first step in a whole range of different activities.
08:15 We've got motorcycle racing coming here.
08:17 We've got the car track days.
08:19 We've got the champ car race one.
08:21 We've got all of those American champ cars, 22 or more of them, coming over from the States to race in the Rockingham 500, September 20th.
08:28 That is going to be really something special again.
08:30 That lap record, I guess, might well even go as high as 200 miles an hour.
08:34 So, from what I understand, from every seat here, you can see up to 90% of the track at any point?
08:39 Well, we've actually achieved better than that.
08:41 In actual fact, we designed the track around the idea that 90% of the seats have 100% view of the action.
08:47 And 100% of the seats will see at least 90% of the action.
08:51 So, even the worst seat in the house here, in fact, is better because it's 95% of the track visible from every single seat in the stadium.
08:57 Fantastic.
08:58 We've got 22,000 seats currently in position.
09:00 We're still building the ends of the Rockingham building.
09:03 That will give us additional capacity and more hospitality suites.
09:05 And then we're building another 20,000 grandstand seats further around the corners as well.
09:09 That's right.
09:10 We've got a full calendar of everything else going on, including these beasts, the Richard Petty Nascars.
09:14 Now, in August, these are the real heavy metal, the Days of Thunder.
09:17 I was going to say Days of Thunder. Tom Cruise, he's a bit small for me.
09:20 Well, this car here is one of the cars.
09:23 This is driven by Kyle Petty, the son of Richard Petty, who was the most successful driver of them all.
09:27 And this car has actually got a passenger seat in because in August, we'll actually be running cars here for a month.
09:33 We'll have 16 of these cars over from Charlotte, North Carolina, with all the American crews, with the drivers.
09:38 And they're going to be here. Basically, people can come along and play and ride along and experience this track for themselves.
09:43 Brilliant. So perhaps if you were thinking about this, it might be something you wanted to get into as a hobby or something.
09:48 You could come along and give it a little go.
09:50 Well, you don't have to be even thinking about taking it that seriously.
09:52 But the ultimate adrenaline ride for your birthday this year, I want my birthday present.
09:56 Do you know what? My birthday is September the 20th, so maybe we should come along.
10:00 I just think we might just be spending our birthday.
10:02 I will be 30.
10:03 What a way to celebrate your birthday.
10:04 Yes, wouldn't it be great?
10:06 Well, you can have a quick look at how you get into one of these beasts to start with.
10:09 It's a bit bigger than some of the other cars I've had.
10:11 It's a big motor car. It's a 6-litre V8 engine in the front.
10:15 It's got nearly the same horsepower as Micka Hackington's McLaren Formula One car.
10:19 This has about 700 horsepower.
10:20 Really?
10:21 And it's heavy. They say 3,500 pounds, which translates into the best part of a tonne and a half.
10:26 So you're talking about a serious heavy metal piece of machinery.
10:30 Tiny seat. It actually wraps around your ribs to hold you in place.
10:33 Your arms go down the outside of it.
10:35 Huge safety cage around here for protection.
10:37 A six-point seat belt harness, which again, look at the size of the buckles on this thing.
10:41 Absolutely massive.
10:42 And this big steering wheel, which is right in your chest because you've got to drive with the arms bent
10:47 because you never, ever use more than that much steering in one of these cars.
10:50 Actually, for all it's a big, heavy, powerful car, you drive it with a lot of finesse.
10:54 Because if you start getting angry with the car on the banking at 160 miles an hour,
10:57 that concrete wall is going to get very close indeed.
11:00 You've even got to take the steering wheel off to get in and out of the car.
11:04 And then you have to climb in proper Dukes of Hazzard style.
11:06 Oh, really? Rascal, pick old train!
11:09 Those were the days, eh?
11:12 Swing your feet in and then just slide down into the seat.
11:16 Oh, that was me then.
11:20 Finally, she's in.
11:26 The big steering wheel just slips around and slips on there. That's it.
11:30 Like I say?
11:33 That's it. Now try turning that steering wheel.
11:36 No power steering. That's great.
11:38 That's why these guys are all fit.
11:41 It's a little heavy.
11:42 Once the car's moving, that actually gets lighter.
11:44 Yeah, I was about to say. Otherwise I might not make the corners.
11:48 But you see how close the steering wheel is to you?
11:51 Because you're driving it with very, very small movements.
11:53 It's very comfortable, actually, this position.
11:54 It is. And you've got all that padding by your right leg and the padding around you.
11:57 And your arms brace yourself in place because when you start going through that corner,
12:01 your body will actually be leaning across against that padding with probably the best part of twice its own body weight.
12:06 Right. So how do you get out of this thing?
12:09 Well, it's quite easy. The steering wheel's designed as a quick release.
12:11 So if you lift the silver collar behind the wheel, that's it. Just pull it towards you.
12:15 And then lift it up on the dashboard.
12:18 And then it's Dukes of Hazzard style, back out through the door.
12:23 Right. So elegance is just out the window here, isn't it?
12:28 Well, there's not a real problem. Just brace your arm on the roof, slide onto the seat and swing your feet over.
12:33 Agile.
12:38 Keep watching as after the break we put Rio to the challenge as she takes to the karts.
12:50 [Music]
13:00 Well, finally here. We were stuck in traffic all morning.
13:09 Can't wait to meet Carl the instructor and find out what car we're driving.
13:13 Look at this. This could be the one. Carl!
13:18 Jane, well done. You've made it. Nice to meet you. The traffic was quite bad, but you're here now.
13:22 That's the important thing. You ready to go?
13:24 Yes. Can we go? Can we go?
13:25 Almost. First of all, we need some safety gear.
13:27 That's all right, isn't it?
13:29 That is fantastic.
13:30 Jane's cut off.
13:31 Pretty fantastic, but we need something a little bit more protective.
13:33 Let's get a sword just now. Let's go.
13:35 Right. Jane, there's your overalls.
13:39 Thank you.
13:40 I've to go and get changed then. I can't go with you.
13:42 [Music]
13:57 Ta-da!
13:58 You look ready and raring.
13:59 Thank you.
14:00 Next stage for us, though, before we go trackside, we've got to give you some race craft.
14:04 Can't we just drive now?
14:06 Racing skills. We've got to do this properly.
14:07 Oh, Carl, I want to drive the car.
14:10 We're going to do this properly.
14:12 Oh, come on, then.
14:14 Driving on track, you have a very different set of priorities to when you're on the road.
14:18 Right.
14:19 On the road, you drive quite defensively.
14:21 Here, you've got to drive a little bit aggressively.
14:23 You've got to keep control of the car, but you want to maximise your speed at all times.
14:26 You want to get as good exit speed as possible from the corners.
14:29 You want to be keeping your lap times low.
14:31 To do that, you need to be consistent out on the circuit.
14:33 On a corner, you've got a corner here.
14:36 If you're coming in from this direction, you're looking to brake before the corner.
14:40 Your speed, your entry speed is going to be too high to take the corner, so you need to brake.
14:44 You've come in on the outside, braking on the way in, turning in at this point here.
14:50 From that point in there, taking a nice smooth line through the corner.
14:55 A lot of people tend to go in way too hard and then end up spinning out over here.
15:00 Don't want to do that. Brake. Make sure you brake lots for the corner.
15:03 If you've got a complicated corner, long-clicking along like this, you want to take what's called a constant radius.
15:09 From the point where you turn in, you're nice and smooth all the way through right to the outside again.
15:15 You're starting in on the outside, braking in a straight line.
15:19 Very, very important. You've got to brake in a straight line.
15:21 Otherwise, you'll be off spinning out in the corner.
15:24 Braking in a straight line, nice and smooth.
15:26 When you get halfway through the corner, you're going to be accelerating all the way out to get a good exit speed.
15:32 I've been stuck in London all morning to get here.
15:35 I've been weaving through the traffic.
15:37 What do I have to do? Sit down and listen to all this.
15:39 I don't want to listen to any more. I don't want to see another bleeding drawing.
15:44 I just want a car. Give me a car. Now.
15:48 Please. What about a smile?
15:51 That's the theory. If you put that into practice, you're going to be a lot smoother and a lot better out on the circuit.
15:56 Okay. Now, can we please get in the car?
15:59 Who said anything about cars? We're using carts.
16:02 What?
16:03 Okay, so I'm a bit disappointed we're not on a full-size race car.
16:07 These carts are too free.
16:09 Well, I guess if you can't get to Brantapshire Silverstone, or you can't afford it,
16:20 then this is a much cheaper alternative. And it's in the centre of London.
16:24 [Music]
16:27 [Music]
16:56 Alright, it might be a small check, but it still looks pretty dangerous.
17:00 I've got to give it a go.
17:02 That is fantastic. I can't wait to have a go.
17:10 You don't need cars to go quick. This is what we're doing today.
17:13 I'm a bit worried I'm not going to fit in there, you know.
17:16 Don't worry.
17:17 I'm a big girl, in case you hadn't noticed.
17:18 You'll be fine. You'll be fine. Pop both feet straight in the seat.
17:21 Are you sure?
17:24 And then lower yourself down.
17:26 Now you look perfect in there, Jane.
17:32 Thank you.
17:33 Ready and rearing.
17:34 Today you've got powering the 200cc four-stroke engine.
17:37 Right.
17:38 Controls in front of you. You've got the steering wheel.
17:40 Very acute. Only quarter turn. Locks and locks.
17:42 So don't yank at the steering wheel.
17:44 Pedals. You've got two pedals. Do totally different things.
17:46 Only use one pedal at a time. Right is go. Left is stop.
17:50 Okay.
17:51 You're ready to go.
17:52 Superb.
17:53 The last thing to mention is, of course, helmet and gloves.
17:56 Right, down.
18:07 Away you go.
18:09 Look at the speed.
18:16 I know you're only going about 30, 40 miles an hour maximum.
18:19 But I'm telling you now, while you're down here, it feels amazing.
18:23 Well?
18:31 Not bad. Not bad.
18:33 What do you mean, not bad?
18:34 But I'm not sure you were watching or listening when we were having a chat upstairs.
18:37 I was listening. I was taking notes up here. I think I was really good.
18:40 And I enjoyed it.
18:41 I'll give you a quick demonstration now.
18:42 Guy's ready to go.
18:43 And he's going to show you what you should have been doing.
18:46 He's braking a lot more on the wane of the corners.
18:48 And you won't see the back end of the car sliding around as he drives out.
18:52 Because it's all about getting good speed out the corner.
18:55 And to do that, you've got to be putting as much power down as you can do.
18:59 Just like that.
19:01 I see what you mean. It is a bit smoother than what I was doing.
19:04 It is a bit smoother. But it's all time. Time and experience.
19:06 We've done thousands of laps here.
19:08 And we're very familiar with the circuit and the karts.
19:10 It is all about experience.
19:12 So is karting a really big thing in London?
19:14 Do you think it's a big thing in London?
19:16 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:17 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:18 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:19 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:20 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:21 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:22 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:23 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:24 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:25 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:26 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:28 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:29 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:30 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:31 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:32 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:33 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:34 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:35 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:36 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:37 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:38 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:39 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:40 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:41 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:42 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:43 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:44 I think it's a big thing in London.
19:45 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:06 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:32 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:39 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:40 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:41 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:42 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:43 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:44 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:45 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:46 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:47 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:48 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:49 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:50 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:51 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:52 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:53 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:54 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:55 I think it's a big thing in London.
20:56 I think I'm getting worms because I'm getting really excited about catching them up.
21:18 Now I'm getting the hang of it mate.
21:19 Oh yes.
21:20 What's the trick in this?
21:21 It's getting the corners right so you don't make any time skidding.
21:22 Come on then mate, I'm right behind you.
21:23 Well this is fantastic fun.
21:24 I think I've been well and truly thrashed by the true professional here.
21:25 But like I'm glad you're here, I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:26 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:27 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:28 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:29 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:30 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:31 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:32 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:33 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
21:34 I'm not used to getting dragged around.
