00:00 - Young people have so many hardships facing them
00:04 in today's world.
00:05 Mental health therapist and author, Erica Tracino,
00:08 is here to talk about her book
00:09 and how it might be able to help those
00:12 seeking self-acceptance.
00:14 Welcome, Erica, thank you for being here.
00:16 - Thank you so much for having me.
00:17 - Absolutely, so this is an incredible concept.
00:21 This was born out of your work as a therapist.
00:24 - Yes.
00:25 - So you were working with young people
00:26 and noticing, hey, there's a trend going on here
00:29 that these young people are really, really struggling
00:31 with self-esteem.
00:32 - Yes, that is my passion.
00:34 I specialize in eating disorders and body image
00:37 and it's such a hard topic to talk about.
00:39 - Absolutely.
00:40 - So trying to find something that's relatable
00:43 in a different way makes it a little bit easier
00:45 to talk about.
00:45 - Definitely, okay, so tell me about the book
00:48 because the book was born out of this work.
00:50 - Yes.
00:51 - Tell me what the story is
00:52 and just give me a little insight.
00:54 - Of course, so my book is about three flower friends
00:57 that are going through their own insecurities
00:59 about different aspects of their bloom
01:01 like most of us can relate to.
01:03 - Yeah.
01:04 - And so through that process,
01:05 not only acknowledging their insecurity,
01:07 but then they're learning that other people
01:08 have different perspectives of their beauty
01:11 and that in this garden, it looks more beautiful
01:13 when we have variety and that we all don't look the same.
01:16 - Oh, this is such a great story
01:20 because, I mean, as you were saying
01:22 that the word bloom just makes me think
01:24 when you're a young person and you're growing
01:26 and you're blooming and you're blossoming
01:28 and maybe sometimes there can be some kind of growing pains
01:32 or some changes that you weren't expecting.
01:34 So if you don't mind, can you open up the book for us
01:36 so we can maybe see a little bit of what is in there
01:39 because I'm a new mom, I have a baby
01:42 and for me, looking at these beautiful illustrations,
01:46 that's what another thing about the book being so great
01:49 is that it has a great story, some beautiful illustrations.
01:53 This is something that so many young people
01:55 are gonna be able to open up and really just relate to
01:58 and enjoy.
02:00 So you have an incredible event coming up this weekend
02:03 where people are gonna be able to come out in person.
02:06 - Yes, I'm so excited.
02:07 - Yeah, tell me all about it.
02:08 - So this Saturday, we're gonna be at Seed House
02:11 and it's from nine to 12.
02:12 I'll be doing multiple readings.
02:14 We have a really fun coloring activity
02:16 that we'll be providing. - Oh, great.
02:19 - We have a great DJ.
02:20 I mean, we have just lots of events, bring people out.
02:23 We love the community aspect.
02:25 We have a lot of really great sponsors also.
02:28 I have obviously Seed House, AZ Foothills,
02:33 Girl About Town, Atlas Hair
02:35 and then we actually had a nursery donate a ton of flowers
02:39 for the display, so we're really excited about that.
02:42 - Oh, I love this.
02:43 - The plant stand, I wanna give them a shout out.
02:45 - Okay, that is fantastic
02:47 and obviously goes along with our theme.
02:48 So hold up these coloring pages again
02:51 because this is something really great
02:52 that people who are coming out,
02:53 if you're coming out with your little ones,
02:55 this is a great activity or for adults too
02:57 because I know that this is something great
02:59 for really any age.
03:01 You can come out, you can color,
03:02 you can kind of have the self-expression
03:04 and this is all about making young people feel
03:08 like they can accept themselves
03:10 'cause this is something that with social media,
03:13 with the kind of outrageous pressures
03:16 that young kids put on themselves these days,
03:19 this message needs to be told right now.
03:21 - Thank you, yes, I'm really passionate
03:23 that the next generation has a better experience
03:26 with body image and I mean, social media is,
03:29 it really changes how we see ourselves,
03:31 see other people and it's good to get back
03:33 to the basics of what our beauty is all about.
03:36 - Definitely and so this is gonna be great
03:38 because you're at Seed House,
03:40 which again ties right into the theme.
03:42 - It does.
03:43 - The bloom and all of that great kind of theme
03:46 that you have for the book, which is really beautiful
03:49 and I love the idea that this is about variety.
03:53 Having different flowers in the garden
03:56 makes the garden all the more beautiful.
03:58 So tell us one more time, let's grab our coffees here
04:01 from Seed House, tell us one more time
04:04 the times and where everybody can come out
04:06 so they can hear you read, they can do some coloring
04:08 and just enjoy the book.
04:09 - Yeah, it's gonna be Saturday at Seed House, 9 to 12.
04:13 We hope to everyone to come.
04:15 We're really excited.
04:16 - Okay, I love this.
04:17 Any last minute tips since you are still
04:18 a practicing therapist, any last minute tips
04:20 for young people out there who may be struggling
04:22 with self-esteem?
04:23 - Starting the conversation, talking to someone,
04:26 whether it's family, friends or finding a therapist.
04:28 Therapists are really easy to access these days, virtually.
04:32 - Absolutely.
04:33 - It's a great resource to just do from your home
04:35 and the privacy on your own time.
04:37 - Definitely, oh that's great.
04:38 Okay, well you heard the news here first
04:40 and you can hear little tidbits from the book
04:42 and come out and enjoy this Saturday.
04:44 All right, Erica, cheers.
04:45 - Thank you so much for being here today.
04:47 - Thank you.
04:48 - All right guys, stick around 'cause we have more
04:49 of The Mix coming up after this.
04:51 Oh, and I love it.
04:52 (silence)
