00:05 My feelings towards this race are for sure love and passion.
00:10 And what makes this race so special
00:13 is the combination of the gravel, the asphalt,
00:15 and the climbing sectors.
00:18 And then, surely, the iconic Santa Caterina
00:22 climb at the finish line.
00:23 [CROWD CHEERING]
00:27 Yeah, there's a lot of passion that you
00:29 feel around the race as well.
00:31 And I grew up on dirt roads at home in Australia.
00:34 So for me, it's not too unfamiliar
00:36 to be riding on the white gravel roads.
00:39 So yeah, I'm excited.
00:40 It's going to be a tough race.
00:42 It's going to be a tough race.
00:45 Is-- I mean, there's a lot of climbing.
00:48 So you need to be strong in the climbs,
00:51 but also technically good through the gravel.
00:53 So tomorrow, we will go and do a recon.
00:56 I know there's a new finishing circuit
00:58 with some different sectors that we haven't tackled before.
01:01 So yeah, knowing the course and being
01:04 prepared and confident in your equipment, in yourself,
01:06 is really important.
01:08 Well, to race as a domestique, for me,
01:12 it's something that I consider a privilege.
01:17 I've been racing as a domestique sometimes for Elisa Balsamo
01:21 for the sprint races.
01:24 I totally understand it's something completely different
01:26 than working for a rider like me that is a bit an all-rounder
01:32 and is suited more for like Stradivianche, for instance.
01:36 The satisfaction that it gives to you
01:39 to be useful for somebody else and to win the race is unique.
01:44 Teamwork is super important in almost any race,
01:56 but especially in Strada with the tough sections.
02:00 And having your teammates around you
02:03 to help you position into sectors is really important.
02:06 Like if you're in a bad position coming into a sector,
02:10 then you have to work that much harder.
02:12 It's so important.
02:13 So to have good teammates around you that can help keep you calm,
02:17 also help you save energy throughout the race
02:20 really gives you that extra final punch
02:22 and that extra boost of confidence
02:24 as well when it comes to the final.
02:26 What has Elisa Ioglopoghini told you for winning this race?
02:36 Stay in the front and race smart, save energy,
02:40 and really trust in your own strength.
02:43 To race as a captain, there's a lot more pressure.
02:48 You tackle the race totally differently.
02:50 Like going in as a domestique, you know the role.
02:53 You know your important points and where you need to be
02:56 and how you're going to get your teammates there.
02:58 And there's time to correct those errors
03:00 if it's not quite right.
03:01 Whereas when you're a captain, you're
03:05 responding to other leaders.
03:06 You're trusting in your teammates.
03:08 You're trying to conserve energy for as long as possible,
03:10 trying not to get too excited that you go too early.
03:13 Once you hit the finish line, that's it.
03:14 There's no opportunity to fix anything.
03:17 Like the result is final.
03:20 I have a very strong team.
03:22 We believe in it and we try.
03:25 I think there are a lot of things that make a great captain.
03:28 Like obviously you need to be strong,
03:30 but I think you also need to be courageous,
03:36 tactically smart.
03:37 You need to have a lot of self-belief,
03:40 but also belief in your teammates and the ability
03:42 to bring them along on the journey
03:44 so that they trust in you and really believe in you.
03:46 I think they're really important aspects of a good team captain.
03:50 Elisa is such a professional.
03:52 She's raced this race so many times.
03:54 She's done so many races in general.
03:57 A lot of the time you're just racing on instinct
03:59 and reacting.
04:03 I think before the race and before that moment,
04:05 you have time to feel the pressure.
04:07 But in the moment, you're running on adrenaline,
04:10 instinct, the sensation you're feeling in the race, passion.
04:15 And afterwards, you can look back and feel the pressure.
04:18 But in that moment, there's no time for it.
04:23 For me personally, when I'm in that key moment of the race
04:27 and I see that the race is about to really light up,
04:34 I carry my teammates on my shoulder
04:37 because I think they have been doing all this for me.
04:43 And now it's my turn to give back.
04:46 And for me, the best thing to do it
04:49 is to try to get a good result and to win the race
04:53 and to do everything to give back all the effort
04:56 that they have been doing for me.
04:58 A final, most of the time, I think about them.
05:01 And I think about the fact that I have to do.
05:06 I have to win.
05:07 I have to finish it off because they
05:09 worked their heart out for me.
05:15 When you cross the finish line and you
05:17 know your teammates have given everything,
05:19 have made the most of your work, it's satisfying.
05:22 You know you were part of the race.
05:24 You know they appreciate your work.
05:25 And Annelies Ruiz is a very strong and appreciative
05:29 and humble leader.
05:30 She really recognizes the work of her teammates.
05:34 And that makes you want to do it again.
05:37 You will go in and fight again and again
05:39 and again for a good leader.
05:41 When they see me going, I hope they feel relieved
05:45 because this means that they did a good job
05:50 and they can finally get rid of the annoying captain.
05:56 Satisfied because they did a good job
05:58 and they put me in the best position to win the race
06:03 or to achieve a good result.
06:04 So I hope they feel fine with that
06:09 and satisfied with the job they have done.
06:14 Yeah, we do really win and lose together.
06:18 Of course, when you win together,
06:21 it's a nice moment to cherish.
06:24 But when you lose together, it's something
06:27 that builds up a team.
06:30 And I think Loretta will feel satisfied
06:35 because she did a good job and all the sacrifices
06:39 she has made for me were worth it.
06:41 Knowing cycling, there's no "I" for sure.
07:01 Oh my god!
07:02 Elisa got a fantastic result for the team with seconds.
07:29 So we're really proud of that.
07:32 And just with everyone's effort,
07:34 like Lizzie was in the break,
07:35 Spratty and Shreem both did a really good job
07:37 covering there in the final.
07:38 So as a team, we're really happy.
07:41 The team raced really well.
07:43 We took the race in our hands.
07:46 We were in the move of the day with Lizzie
07:48 and then Lizzie really gave her 100% for us
07:52 together with Loretta, together with Spratty.
07:55 Yeah, I think we can be happy with what we achieved
07:59 and we look forward to the next races.
