Speculation is mounting that Tasmanian premier Jeremy Rockliff will call an early election sometime this week, with members of Australia’s last standing liberal government to meet in Hobart tomorrow. But political expects are warning going to the polls early might not make Tasmania’s parliament any easier to manage.

00:00 As the government toasts a bumper festivale, it could be just days away from sending an
00:07 even larger crowd to an early election.
00:10 That is a matter for the Premier as he carefully weighs up the best way for us as a government
00:16 elected by the people of Tasmania to serve our state and focus on their needs.
00:22 After a week of negotiations with independents John Tucker and Lara Alexander, the Premier's
00:28 response has experts resign to an early vote.
00:31 Well it will look more like we're heading to it than we did on Friday morning. The Premier
00:36 now says he's really actively considering it. That is a big change.
00:41 But there's no guarantee an election would make Tasmania's parliament easier to manage.
00:46 Careful what you wish for because governments that have been in minority, and this one through
00:50 no fault of its own, often don't do well at the next election. So that's just something
00:55 to be wary of.
00:57 As election speculation heats up, a war of words has erupted over signage for an upper
01:02 house contest that's more than three months away. A former Labor leader claiming this
01:06 trailer is giving his opponent, the incumbent member for Prosser, Jane Howlett, an unfair
01:12 leg up.
01:13 The Electoral Commission themselves require a level playing field. The law requires a
01:18 level playing field. This is flouting the law.
01:20 Oh well I'm so glad that Brian Green's finally woken up and if he would only spend a bit
01:25 more time on his own campaign rather than worrying about registered trailers on private
01:31 property.
01:32 Tomorrow could loom as D-Day for the government, with a meeting of Mr Rockleaf's cabinet and
01:37 then all Liberal MPs to decide exactly when Tasmanians are sent to the polls.
