Transcript
00:00 I'm your host Max Torres and we got a breaking news episode of the podcast as
00:06 five-star wide receiver Gatlin bear has committed to Oregon
00:11 Dan Lanning and the Ducks are as hot as any team in college football and
00:16 Joining me to break it all down is my guy Spencer McLaughlin Spencer. How the heck are you doing?
00:23 Great, man doing great always always busy and in the weekend times stirring hoop season
00:29 And that's the only way we'd rather be
00:31 Well, I am so glad that you could take some of your time out of your busy schedule to talk some ducks with me
00:36 We were just I was on your show earlier this week, but these ducks definitely keep us busy
00:42 So I'm glad that you could come on and break this one down with me get some instant reaction
00:47 I know that it's been a little bit of a wide variety of reaction from Oregon fans, right since this happened
00:54 I think you have some fans that are on one side saying oh man, this is awesome
00:58 We're unstoppable five-star wide receiver recruit coming in and then on the other side you have whoa, he's not coming for another two years
01:05 Because he is indeed going to be taking a two-year mission trip
01:09 So the Ducks are gonna have to wait to get him in Eugene and with the team, but man, what's what's your reaction to this news?
01:16 Yeah, I think it's the caliber of player that duck fans have come to expect to see
01:21 Commit to Oregon and that goes for really any position group, you know
01:25 I think this is someone who brings it brings a lot of high-level traits, especially his speed
01:31 You see there on YouTube if you're watching the the leaping ability the ball the ball skills that he's got as well
01:37 But really his just his foot speed. He's a track guy
01:41 I'm pretty sure and if memory serves and he's just someone who I think Oregon it was you know
01:47 has been targeted for a while certainly was helped with the
01:50 Departure of Jim Harbaugh and Jay Harbaugh to the NFL because Harbaugh went on his his brother's staff
01:57 Jay Harbaugh was his primary recruiter at Michigan
02:00 So that opened the door for Oregon and they've been able to walk through that door and that's a really good thing
02:04 You know, even if you look at this as the first recruit for
02:08 2026 I
02:11 Mean how much stronger of a start do you want to get off to?
02:13 This is an explosive playmaker and someone who you know, Oregon fans should be excited about to be sure
02:19 I do understand the you know fans who say why you know, what are we talking about?
02:26 This guy for I can't get excited for someone who's not going to be around for a couple of years and that's completely fair
02:33 But we always have an eye to the future, you know
02:36 Because if you don't you look at what's happening in Washington right now
02:39 They didn't recruit at a high level for a couple of years and then they had a very senior laden team and then guess what?
02:45 Happened. They don't really have anyone else waiting in the wings. They have a couple guys
02:49 But certainly not, you know one that allows them to compete at a conference championship level as they did a season ago
02:55 so, you know this sort of stuff matters recruiting, you know for 2024 is
03:00 It's all done for Oregon and you're looking at 2025 and 26 and you want to just keep stacking those classes together
03:08 So that you've always got depth so that you've always got talent and I think that's what Gatlin bear represents here
03:14 Gatlin bear is a tremendous player that is gonna join an Oregon offense that has just been
03:19 Uber productive I think is the way that we can describe it Spencer
03:24 You got 2,000 yard wide receivers and Troy Franklin and Tez Johnson this past year
03:29 Franklin's gonna be heading off to the NFL draft and Tez Johnson wants to run it back one more year
03:34 After really just kicking things into high gear in the second half of that season in 2023
03:39 but I think that
03:42 with bear committing to Oregon the Ducks are getting a really really solid player and
03:47 Certainly, I see that
03:49 I thought he was gonna score a touchdown on that cutback play and I was I was about to go berserk run run that one
03:54 back again, I
03:56 Mean like it I mean it's not a fair fight
03:59 For him to go up against the kids that are trying to guard him in high school, you know
04:03 Like his speed is just ridiculous, but that that cutback play
04:06 I thought that was about to be a touchdown and I hadn't watched all of his huddle highlights
04:10 And that was a new one for me. Sorry to cut you off max
04:12 But that was just that was just almost an astonishing for those listening on podcast. He's down near his own goal line
04:18 He catches a tunnel screen and then the defense kind of takes it away and he decides to reverse field
04:24 He runs back towards his own end zone and all the way to the other side
04:27 He ends up picking up like 30 40 yards on the play. Yeah, here it is. Here it is right here
04:31 So they set up
04:34 Quick screen to the far side good cut block
04:36 But then he's sworn by the defense and then he runs back and then he jukes back again
04:40 He's all the way back to the five-yard line
04:42 Then he veers the near side 10 15 25 30 35 and out to the 40-yard line
04:47 Like you just you just don't see a lot of athletes like that even guys that are that are four-star recruits
04:52 He's he's some kind of player
