00:00 Today on Rappler
00:12 CNN Philippines' website and social media presence are wiped out after closure.
00:17 The Supreme Court moots Rappler's petition challenging the ban on presidential coverage
00:22 of the Duterte administration.
00:24 Two crew members are killed in a collision with a Chinese vessel off the coast of Batangas.
00:29 The International Court of Justice declines to rule on Ukraine's allegations of Russian
00:33 involvement in the 2014 shooting of a Malaysia Airlines plane.
00:38 And Janela Salvador is set to star in a new film with Thai actor Win Mithawin.
00:44 Nearly all traces of CNN Philippines' website and social media presence, including stories
00:49 and posts on Facebook and X, are erased Wednesday night, January 31.
00:54 All that remains are the cached search results pointing to the website, which shows it is
00:58 unavailable.
00:59 The erasure of the website and social media posts comes as a blow to the CNN Philippines
01:04 staff and to those archiving the stories and content published by the newsgroup.
01:08 Lara Tan, former digital executive producer, posts on X, "Nine years of working for CNN
01:14 Philippines started and ended on the website and our social media pages.
01:18 In the end, it's not just us, the employees who lose out, but also the people."
01:22 The closure comes after what it called "significant financial losses."
01:27 Meantime, Manny V. Pangilinan's TV5 launches RPTV on Channel 9, which used to be CNN Philippines'
01:34 channel on Free TV.
01:37 The Supreme Court dismisses Rappler's petition, which sought to challenge the ban on presidential
01:42 coverages imposed during the time of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
01:46 In a 32-page decision dated June 27, 2023, but was only publicized on Thursday, February
01:52 1, 2024, the high court moved to dismiss the petition due to mootness.
01:57 "Moot" means the court found the petition to have lost its practical significance because
02:01 the concern has already been resolved.
02:03 On April 10, 2019, Rappler journalists, led by Pi Aranada, then Rappler's Malacañang
02:09 reporter, filed a petition for certiorari and prohibition with the SC.
02:13 The Rappler petition argued the coverage ban violated constitutional rights to free press,
02:18 free speech, equal protection, and due process.
02:21 The SC points out a ruling would not have any practical value as Duterte is already
02:26 out of office, and Rappler already has access to Marcos' presidential events.
02:32 Two Filipino crew members die while two Chinese suffer injuries after two passenger vessels
02:37 collided in the waters off Verde Islands, Batangas, on Wednesday, January 31.
02:43 Philippine Coast Guard Batangas Station Captain Jerome Gessiel says the accident killed the
02:47 captain and the third mate of Hop and Go 1 fast craft.
02:51 Two Chinese nationals, both passengers of the ferry, were hurt in the accident.
02:55 The Coast Guard's substation in Puerto Galera, Mindoro, dispatches a team to help 105 passengers,
03:01 including Swedes and Chinese, and 19 crew members of Ocean Jet 6.
03:05 All are safe.
03:06 Initial investigation shows Ocean Jet 6 was headed to Calapan from Batangas, while Hop
03:11 and Go 1 was en route to Batangas from Puerto Galera.
03:15 The Maritime Industry Authority suspends the safety certificates of the two vessels.
03:21 Judges at the International Court of Justice declined to rule on allegations that Russia
03:26 was responsible for shooting down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine
03:31 in 2014.
03:33 But the ICJ says it finds Russia violated elements of a United Nations anti-terrorism
03:38 treaty by not investigating plausible allegations that some funds were sent from Russia to Ukraine
03:43 to possibly fund terrorist activities.
03:46 The lawsuit, filed by Ukraine in 2017, accuses Russia of violating an anti-terrorism treaty
03:52 by funding pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.
03:54 The court declined to rule on the downing of MH17, saying violations of funding terrorism
03:59 only applied to financial support, not to supplying weapons or training alleged by Ukraine.
04:04 The court's judgments are final and without appeal, but it has no way to enforce its rulings.
04:11 Filipina actress Janela Salvador joins forces with Thai actor Nguyen Matawin for the very
04:16 first time in the film Under Parallel Skies.
04:19 28 Squared Studios drops the official teaser for the film and announces it will premiere
04:24 in April 2024 in cinemas.
04:27 The short trailer opens with Janela's character pulling Nguyen's character back from the edge
04:31 of a railing as it had looked like he was preparing to jump.
04:34 An ABS-CBN news report says Under Parallel Skies centers on a man who meets a woman connected
04:40 to the painful past he has been trying to heal from.
04:43 Under Parallel Skies, which was shot in Hong Kong, was directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo,
04:47 who is behind the highest-grossing independent Filipino film, Kita Kita.
04:52 In a ABS-CBN interview, Bernardo earlier said Nguyen and Janela could bring their unique
04:56 experiences from their respective cultures to this cross-country collaboration.
05:03 And that's today's wrap.
