Boutique owner gets one year prison, caning for cheating bride-to-be

A boutique owner, providing wedding planning services, was sentenced to one year in prison and one stroke of the cane by the Magistrates Court in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (Jan 31) after pleading guilty to a charge of cheating his client of RM9,000 last year.

00:14 Magistrate Atiqa Mohammed Saeem meted out the sentence on Hasmarun Hashim after he pleaded
00:20 guilty to the charge and ordered him to serve the prison sentence immediately.
00:24 The 31-year-old was accused of cheating the 29-year-old client by deceiving her into transferring
00:30 a total of 9,000 ringgit in two transactions to his bank account, Arjuna Cinta Wedding,

00:39 He allegedly committed the offence at a house in Taman Shamilin Pakasa, Cheras on August

00:47 He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which provides a jail term of between
00:52 one and ten years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
00:56 Hasmarun, who was unrepresented, appealed for a minimum sentence on the basis that he
01:02 has dependents, including sickly parents and a school-going sibling.
