Cameron Highlands landslide: Third body recovered, landslide site illegally cleared

Another body of a landslide victim at Kampung Raja, Blue Valley in Cameron Highlands was found at 12.15am on Saturday (Jan 27), bringing the total number of bodies recovered so far to three.

Meanwhile, Cameron Highlands district officer Syed Ahmad Khirulanwar Al-Yahya Syed Abdul Rahman, said the landslide incident occurred in the Sungai Wi D Forest Reserve area, which had been illegally cleared by a vegetable farm operator since last year, despite facing enforcement actions.

00:20 the Fire and Rescue Department's control post at the site of the landslide on Saturday that
00:26 the body of a man was found by the Fire and Rescue Department's tracker dock near Sector
00:31 C where the first body was found on Friday. On the two bodies found on Friday, Azri said
00:38 they were identified as 36-year-old Lo Har Faye and 48-year-old Kee Shin Ong. Azri added
00:46 that the bodies had been sent to Sultana Haja Kalsum Hospital in Cameron Highlands for further
00:51 action. The recovered bodies were among five Myanmar nationals buried alive when their
00:58 homes were hit by a landslide at about 2.40am on Friday. The other three victims involved
01:05 were identified as 56-year-old Shin Lo Har, 37-year-old Ong Mew and the woman, 25-year-old
01:12 Thang Mung. Meanwhile, Cameron Highlands District Officer Said Ahmad Kiro Anwar Al-Yaya
01:19 Sai Abdur Rahman said the landslide incident occurred in the Sungai Wedi Forest Reserve
01:25 area which had been illegally cleared by a vegetable farm operator since last year despite
01:31 facing enforcement actions. He said the local farm owner was arrested during an enforcement
01:38 operation by the Pahang State Forestry Department in April last year. Sai Ahmad added that the
01:44 settler applied for a forest land use permit but the forestry department did not grant
01:50 approval due to the steep slope exceeding 35 degrees. He said continuous monitoring
01:58 by the relevant departments would be undertaken to address the problem of forest encroachment
