It's been increasing in popularity over the past few years and some culinary insiders predict 2024 will witness a significant upswing in consumer interest. Plant based meats are a common sight now on menus. I'm here today in Birmingham to get people's thoughts on alternative proteins.

00:00 When it comes to supplementary meats, such as vegan types or anything that's kind of
00:07 a different type, I have tried them. I think some of them are really tasty. I think they
00:12 have a lot of fillers in them, which tends to be a big issue for myself. I do take a
00:17 lot in, prior to my own health care, and I don't particularly find the nutritional value
00:24 out of them the same as what you can get from just normal fruits and veg or from meats themselves.
00:29 No, I think it's just a fad, to be honest. I think people are going to still eat meat,
00:35 it's going to be a new thing next thing. No.
00:40 Yes, I have tried it before. I tried it at a restaurant in Birmingham. I can't remember
00:45 whether it was actually cool, but I think it was quite nice. I wasn't expecting it to
00:50 be nice because obviously it wasn't meat. But I tried it, it was dead good. I loved
00:55 it. I'm not sure if you've had it before. I've had it before. I wasn't the biggest
00:59 fan. I don't think that people who like meat will consider really change, at least,
01:07 to plant-based. But it's not bad. But for someone that likes meat, I'm not the biggest
01:13 fan of it. I find it joyous.
01:16 I've tried it. I was vegetarian for about 17 years, so I ate it a lot. I think it's
01:22 a really good thing, and lots of people have tried it. It's more and more popular, and
01:27 it tastes better now than it's ever done. You can eat it, and you feel like you're
01:32 eating a real sausage. It's much improved to how it used to be, and I've eaten it
01:37 many, many times.
01:39 Personally, I don't like it, but I think probably it will take off. It's the thing
01:50 that people want to do now these days, but I don't follow fashion. I don't follow
01:55 the trends. If it doesn't taste good, I won't buy it.
02:02 I've tried vegan meat before, but I wasn't really a big fan of it, to be fair. I didn't
02:07 really like it.
02:10 I guess I've had the—I prefer—I've had normal chicken, obviously, normal chicken's
02:16 processed and stuff like that, and I don't agree with chickens, with chickens being slaughtered
02:21 off. So my opinion, really, is move it forward. I've seen it's kind of vegan chicken, as
02:29 it is, the same texture, but it's not meat.
02:34 I think food trends in 2024 are going to be based around about sustainability and plant
02:39 proteins, really. I think people really being conscious about what they put in their mouth,
02:43 and also about the local providence as well. I think there isn't so much money in everyone's
02:48 pocket anymore, and food is becoming really conscious about it. So I think sustainability,
02:54 making sure that food is actually coming from a good place. I think eating not as much meat
02:58 as possible, but obviously things like fried chicken will always be really, really popular.
