What’s missing from Birmingham in 2024? Locals have their say

  • yesterday
Birmingham is a diverse and evolving city, but are there things it’s missing? We took to the streets to ask local people what they think Birmingham could benefit from that it doesn't already have in 2024, and what changes they would like to see in the future.

00:00I think social spaces and social activities for younger people. I feel like there's a
00:06lot based in Birmingham that is sort of tailored towards adults, whereas I can imagine if you're
00:12a child or in the age of 18 you might deem that there is not appropriate activities for
00:18people to do.
00:21Car parking might be good, cheaper and nicer.
00:25That is also a good one.
00:28Great question. What's missing? Well, one thing, quite small, there's no Taco Bell in
00:36the city centre. There you go.
00:40I think a bit more accessibility, even though we're obviously building a tram and stuff,
00:43we don't have access to Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton. We do, but it's not as built off. I definitely
00:50think there needs to be more of a teenage community centre maybe in town, because there's
00:55a lot of kids that come in and obviously frolick around and stuff. If I can't use that word
00:58I do apologise, but a place where we can actually send kids after school and say, come work
01:04here for two hours, you get paid a wage, and then obviously when they go older, 16 to 18
01:10to older, they can obviously just jump into a job straight away. Just more pathways if
01:13I'm honest. I think I like obviously the LGBT community. I feel like we don't talk about
01:20them enough. Obviously they're part of our community.
01:23For people with certain disabilities, there's no bathrooms or toilets anywhere to go around
01:27in Birmingham, but if you're going to talk about nightlife or something else that's different.
01:31They've knocked down a lot of places which used to be a lot of places for more communication,
01:36which I can't find none for certain people. That's what it's all about, learning about
01:40different things, what's happened. It's changed too much for me. It's gone too fast. It's
01:45missing out on a lot of things. Life has just changed.
01:49I don't think Birmingham has enough residential property in the centre of the city. It seems
01:54to be a bit dead at night. I think that would improve things considerably.
