UW coach Jedd Fisch sized up what it takes to be competitive in the Big Ten.

00:00 Obviously you want to make an immediate impression in the Big Ten and you have a lot of challenges
00:04 like you mentioned with the window and all of that from a recruiting standpoint.
00:08 What are the non-negotiables when you look at what has to happen to be able to win games
00:12 in the Big Ten this year?
00:13 What are the things that you're going to have to do in the next couple of months in building
00:16 a roster and all those things to be able to put a product on the field?
00:22 To win games in the Big Ten, it starts in the trenches.
00:26 As we all know, if you can't run the ball or stop the run, you don't have a chance.
00:32 That's number one.
00:33 Number two, pass protection.
00:35 So it's going to come down to what does it look like with our offensive and defensive
00:39 line.
00:40 It all starts with the quarterback.
00:42 We all know that.
00:43 You guys have had a great one here, but he's not here anymore.
00:46 So we have to find a way to make sure that we have the right quarterback to play to win
00:51 games in the Big Ten or in any conference.
00:54 But it's going to come down to a lot of hard work right now to really look at what this
00:57 roster looks like.
00:58 It is unique.
01:01 I'm not saying that everything is a full rebuild, and I'm not saying that we're going to walk
01:06 out there and win every game in this first year.
01:09 But what we need to do is to be competitive in the Big Ten every weekend and week out,
01:13 is we're going to have to build this roster back up.
01:16 I think there's 63 players on the roster right now, 63 scholarship players at 85.
01:23 So that's 22 spots that we need to find a home and we need to find a way.
01:28 And if we can do that, we're going to do something pretty special.
