James Marsden prepares for the 2023 Emmy Awards where he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role on Jury Duty. Watch as James loosens up while he gets ready for his big night, discusses his pre-show rituals, and takes a call from Ronald from Jury Duty.

00:25 I'm not sure I want to give away my secrets.

00:33 Sorry. How am I feeling today?
00:37 Feeling pretty good.
00:38 It feels like it's the last leg of the race
00:42 coming down to the Emmys, which is the big one for me.
00:45 I think, you know,
00:48 pretending like the nerves aren't there
00:50 doesn't always work, but I'm good.
00:52 I usually try and stick with the healthy stuff, you know,
00:55 like get a little exercise in, and thank you.

00:59 You know, water, some oatmeal, go for a walk, sleep.
01:05 You know, you just want to be fresh on the day.
01:07 You want to have your wits about you,
01:08 so I just want to be as clear as possible.
01:10 I don't want anything kind of clouding my thoughts.
01:15 I mean, honestly, pre-show rituals,
01:18 I feel like it's always a good idea
01:19 to just do something normal,
01:22 like go to the grocery store and get some milk,
01:25 pick the dog up from grooming,
01:27 just to remind yourself that it's like, you know,
01:29 get your mind off of everything.
01:30 The nerves don't really kick in until you get there
01:32 and you see everybody.
01:33 Keep it clean, stay hydrated, have a good time.
01:38 -What are your thoughts on the viral text message?
01:41 -Well, I didn't see that coming, I'll be honest, nor did she.
01:45 I had to explain to her what viral meant.
01:46 She was like, "Do I need to go to the doctor?"
01:48 Turns out everybody was way more interested in my mom
01:51 than all my other photos of me on the carpet
01:54 and my hair and my suits.
01:56 Nobody really cared.
01:57 They just wanted to hear about my mom.
01:58 It was just such a sweet text that she sent during the Globes
02:02 and it was just, I don't know, so pure and sweet
02:05 and just a nice little wholesome moment.
02:07 The whole "Jury Duty" family is such a great, tight-knit family
02:10 and I get to celebrate all of that with them,
02:12 which is really special.
02:14 I think all of us are so blown away
02:16 by the fact that we're here talking about it.
02:18 That tequila's starting to kick in.

02:25 This was actually organic.

04:08 I mean, I would go home from set with makeup on my face
04:11 and just fall asleep.
04:13 And it wasn't until recently when people say
04:15 that you shouldn't do that.
04:18 But maybe that's my secret.
04:22 Maybe makeup is a really good moisturizer.
04:26 And people just don't know 'cause they've been taking it
04:27 off their face for so long.
04:29 It's not a, you know, action-cut kind of show.
04:33 We were all nervous that, you know,
04:36 if he discovered what we were doing, you know,
04:40 we got to get him to the finish line.
04:41 It's three weeks of shooting.
04:43 The closer you got him to the end, the higher the stakes.
04:47 So I think all of us were just, you know --
04:50 It was like live theater. You just couldn't screw up.
04:53 Everyone was scared to be the one to blow it.
04:55 It was fun for me to be that character
04:58 and mess around with the other actors.
04:59 I always like making fun of myself.
05:01 I like making fun of -- I mean, I love what I do,
05:03 and I take it very seriously.
05:04 But I like to keep it in check and sort of, I don't know,
05:09 find ways to playfully make fun of it
05:11 without, like, discounting or discrediting
05:15 what we do for a living, you know?
05:16 I love it. I've been doing it for 30 years.

05:19 Hair check, makeup check, ready to get dressed.
