Transcript
00:00 >> Four years still ranked in the top 20, and you're 16th, so the nation loves you.
00:04 How about your team?
00:05 I mean, is your team still real confident after two losses?
00:08 >> Yeah, we have to be.
00:09 It was a tough week.
00:11 The outcome was not what we wanted.
00:14 So we gotta ask yourself why.
00:18 You're gonna have to ask why you won, why you lost, and address it and get better.
00:23 And I think we know it was two tough games,
00:29 but we expected to win and we didn't.
00:31 So our guys, to answer your question, yeah, they're confident.
00:34 We just gotta dig down deeper, dig down deeper, find ways to get better.
00:43 But we don't have any lack of confidence in our ability or
00:47 what kind of team we are by losing this week.
00:50 We wanna fix it, we wanna get better, we wanna get back in the win column.
00:54 And that's the way we worked yesterday, we approached it.
00:58 Everything was positive, energetic, with a little edge.
01:03 Cuz you have to have a little edge.
01:04 Whether you win or lose, you gotta maintain that edge in this league.
01:06 It's just insanity with eight of us ranked in the top 25.
01:10 >> Sam mentioned one of the takeaways from Saturday is you guys can't get away
01:14 from what you do.
01:16 What does that look like?
01:18 >> Really defensively.
01:19 We've lost track of some of the little things we do defensively.
01:24 And it cost us two points here, two points there, two points there.
01:28 A transition D that we weren't on the helpline and they got a dunk.
01:31 We went under a flare, we should be going over a flare.
01:35 Like just a bunch of little stuff like that that just added up.
01:38 And we gotta get back to coveting the possession by possession
01:44 little things that go into being a very good defensive team.
01:47 And then with that, we gotta ramp up our activity with our hands.
01:54 Like we were creating a lot of turnovers or
01:57 when we did create them we were turning them into baskets.
01:59 And we just haven't been as active with our hands for
02:03 whatever reason, getting deflections, being aggressive.
02:06 We gotta get to that.
02:07 We gotta get some stops and some turnovers so we can run.
02:10 It's not gambling.
02:11 It's not like gambling defense, but it's just solid of what we do
02:15 to try to create some aggressiveness and some transition points.
02:19 >> You've mentioned toughness a couple of times.
02:20 How do you bring toughness into practice?
02:23 >> Well, the thing about the toughness is almost a mentality of,
02:28 you can't let your offense dictate your defense.
02:31 And that's what I think toughness is that.
02:33 Toughness is not, hey, you miss a couple shots or
02:37 your teammate misses you on a one more pass.
02:41 You can't let that affect your defense.
02:42 Nothing can affect your defense, nothing.
02:45 That's toughness.
02:46 We've gotta maintain an intensity, possession by possessions,
02:51 no matter what happens on the offensive end.
02:53 And we've proven that has been able to help us win games.
02:57 And I do think that has slipped in.
02:59 I think that's what our guys, and what we're talking about as toughness is that.
03:03 Don't let anything, your shot, a turnover, a bad call,
03:07 nothing should affect your tenacity, your toughness on defense.
03:11 >> Porter, what'd you think of Luke's minutes on Saturday?
03:13 It seemed like he gave you guys some good stuff.
03:15 >> He did.
03:16 Obviously, you can lean towards him making the two shots.
03:18 But what I liked is even in the first half, he looked comfortable.
03:22 He looked like the moment wasn't afraid of the moment.
03:25 And that was the sign that I saw.
03:27 Cuz you can sell.
03:29 And I thought he embraced the moment.
03:31 He caught, he dribbled, he went uphill on a DHO, passed it, snapped it.
03:35 And he just looked like he was ready mentally.
03:38 And I always say when your mind's right, your game's right.
03:41 And when you're aggressive, and then he popped up and hit the two shots.
03:44 So we felt good in the first half.
03:46 We said at half time, Luke looked comfortable in that first half.
03:49 And then he sure as heck came in and hit two nice shots for us.
03:53 So we can build on it.
03:55 One of the things is always matchups defensively.
03:58 And that's something.
04:00 But I think as you get into this Big 12, there's some matchups that I think he's
04:04 gonna be able to really help us and only helps us.
04:07 Because he's a weapon.
04:08 He can really shoot that thing.
04:09 >> Porter, when you look at scouting West Virginia, how unique is it to have
04:12 this many key pieces come online later in the season?
04:15 How much difficult is that?
04:16 >> It's a whole other discussion about the NCAA.
04:18 >> [LAUGH] >> Very good players.
04:21 I mean, Farrakhan and Battle are two, I mean, upper level Big 12 players.
04:27 That they just, they got eligible last six, seven games.
04:30 Battle's averaging 20, Farrakhan's averaging 12.
04:33 Absolutely are bucket getters.
04:34 They can go get the basket.
04:35 And they both can go off the dribble.
04:37 They both can shoot the three.
04:38 Really impressed.
04:40 I mean, they're very, very good.
04:42 And I think they're really tough.
04:44 Krasinski, they're all tough.
04:47 And their guards, I think Carissa gives you a playmaking guard that absolutely is,
04:53 I mean, you can't fall asleep.
04:55 He's throwing dimes all over the court.
04:57 But they combine a toughness and then these two guys that they batted late here,
05:02 Farrakhan and Battle, are just offensive.
05:04 They can really go get it.
05:06 And they're high level scorers and we've gotta be on our best defensively.
05:10 >> And you saw Texas, they really ran up the free throw count there.
05:14 What do you have to do to make sure you're staying in front and
05:15 not getting them to the line?
05:17 >> That's toughness, is defense without fouling.
05:19 The discipline without fouling.
05:21 They draw a lot of fouls.
05:22 And we gotta be on that, not being sloppy with reach in and reach for the lights.
05:28 And they do a very good job.
05:29 They're physical.
05:31 So we've gotta play great defense without fouling.
05:34 >> They changed coaches, but they didn't go out of the family, so to speak.
05:37 So are they the same team, Kress and- >> I mean, yeah,
05:40 they're pressing some but not as much.
05:42 But they're the same team in terms of physical defensively.
05:46 I mean, absolutely smashing on the glass.
05:49 Just everything is physical.
05:51 Some of the same actions it is, but they've got that mentality.
05:54 Just watching their games in the league and
05:57 it's the same physical, physical mentality.
06:00 >> You talk about being aggressive, keeping your hands in motion,
06:04 things like that.
06:05 How do you go about coaching that the last couple days when it comes to
06:09 trying to force more turnovers?
06:12 >> Coaching the offense?
06:13 >> Well, defense, on the court with trying to keep your hands moving,
06:18 force more turnovers.
06:20 >> We were really charting deflections yesterday.
06:22 We know how many, when we get deflections, that's something that's good.
06:26 And then we were calling reach in dumb fouls.
06:31 If you have an undisciplined foul, we were calling it and they were running.
06:34 You've gotta get disciplined.
06:36 Just reach in silly fouls, lazy fouls.
06:39 You gotta know the rules.
06:40 You gotta slide your feet, you gotta show the hands.
06:42 They wanna call the hand check.
06:43 And we just really emphasizing that part of it cuz they're very good.
06:48 They're physical and they try to draw fouls and they do a good job of it.
06:52 But so that's the main thing.
06:55 And for us, just nothing like changing the script.
06:58 Just getting back to what really, we need to get more stops.
07:03 It's just be that, you can't run if you're not getting stops.
07:07 And we gotta be better defensively and get back to the little things defensively.
07:12 >> Students are back, how fun is that gonna be to have in the morning?
07:18 >> I'm really excited that the students are back.
07:20 Sometimes you're playing three games during Christmas break without the students.
07:23 So I know the weather, they got off school today, so
07:26 they should be nice and rested to come to the game.
07:29 But man, I can't wait to see the students and
07:31 the student body in that student section and all the fans.
07:35 I hope they come out and it's a huge game for us and they make a difference.
07:42 >> I know you've talked about it a few times, but in that regard,
07:46 how do you feel like things have gone as far as building that up?
07:50 >> Last game, yeah, the Iowa State,
07:51 I mean we've had some of the biggest student crowds of the year.
07:54 I mean Providence game, Iowa State for no students here being a sellout.
07:58 That's going in the right direction.
07:59 They make a difference and you just gotta keep going.
08:02 There's some good promotional things.
08:06 I think everybody loves the $2 beers in concessions.
08:09 So we got $2 beers going, that's gotta be a nice little thing.
08:12 And I try to control what I control.
08:14 I got hit on social media that there wasn't enough beer stands.
08:16 So there's gonna be more beer stands at the game tomorrow.
08:20 So people don't have to worry about $2 beers having to wait in line, hopefully.
08:25 So just always trying to do what we can do to get the big crowds in the Lloyd Noble.
08:29 (laughing)
