REPORT: Patriots Might WAIT Until after NFL Draft to HIRE GM

Several reports surfaced on Saturday, casting doubt on whether the New England Patriots will appoint a general manager before the main part of the offseason. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reported on “Postseason NFL Countdown,” the Patriots are in no hurry to fill the general manager position and may even delay the decision until after the NFL Draft. Taylor Kyles from CLNS Media offers his perspective on this latest development in the Patriots' search for a GM.

00:00 What's going on everyone? It's Taylor Kiles here for CLNS Media.
00:03 It looks like Bill Belichick's tendency to zig when everyone else zagged
00:06 might have rubbed off on the Kraft family.
00:08 As it's been reported, the Patriots might not hire a general manager before this upcoming draft.
00:13 Instead, it looks like they could have a collaborative effort
00:16 where we see Director of Scouting Elliott Wolfe handle the scouting and draft process
00:21 and see Matt Groh, who is the Director of Player Personnel,
00:24 take on for agency and rebuild the roster with veteran talent
00:28 and re-sign players who are going to be incoming free agents.
00:31 Now, I do acknowledge that this is a very unorthodox process.
00:35 There's already been some outrage online and I completely understand why.
00:39 This is a very weird process, but it's not unprecedented
00:42 as we did see the same thing happen during the changing of regimes
00:45 with the Buffalo Bills in recent history.
00:47 That said, not having a general manager to offer a focused voice and vision
00:52 could end up blowing up in the Patriots' faces, that is undeniable.
00:55 But Robert Kraft is showing a lot of faith in his homegrown talent.
00:59 Gerard Mayo is the first black coach in team history and the youngest coach in the NFL,
01:03 which is obviously something that's going to draw a lot of speculation
01:06 within his first year with the team.
01:08 Additionally, Elliott Wolfe and Matt Groh have been on Belichick's staff for a while
01:13 and seen how he works, but like Mayo, they may have their own vision for the future,
01:17 as it's been reported in several stories since around the end of the Belichick era
01:21 that Belichick was making decisions that directly went in conflict
01:24 with what a lot of people on his staff actually wanted.
01:27 Now, we're just going to have to wait and see until for agency hits
01:30 to see how well Robert Kraft's vision will work,
01:32 and there's still always the possibility that they will interview
01:35 and potentially hire a general manager candidate down the road.
01:38 But as of now, it looks like we're going to see Gerard Mayo,
01:41 Elliott Wolfe, and Matt Groh get their chance to show Robert Kraft
01:45 just how much of the Belichick era they had their fingerprints on.
01:49 The NFL season is wrapping up,
01:52 and there's still time to get in on the action with FanDuel,
01:55 America's number one sports book.
01:57 Right now, new customers get 150 in bonus bets,
02:00 guaranteed when you place a $5 bet.
