00:10Yeah, they did.
00:12It's funny in social media.
00:14So fans that don't understand Scott, we'll get into it.
00:17Why would they do this?
00:18The guys in the final year of his deal, he got hurt last season.
00:20Well, a couple things.
00:21And by the way, it's a four year deal worth 36 million, so nine million a season.
00:25So it's funny what that means in the landscape of running back in a minute.
00:29But here's the deal.
00:31They're going to be a run based offense.
00:33This is what they want with Gerard Mayo and the changes Alex Van Pelt as the offense coordinator.
00:39They want to be a run first team.
00:41And to do it, you need what we call a bell cow.
00:43A guy who could handle the rushing load.
00:46Stephenson is terrific in the run game, went healthy.
00:48He's a good player.
00:49But he was beat up physically last season, a bunch of injuries, he tried to play through
00:52them.
00:53And he's also good in the pass game.
00:55And they knew he was going to go in the final year.
00:57The running back numbers are going up.
00:59They wanted him to be a Patriot for a long time.
01:02A lot of the holdovers on the staff knew him.
01:05They knew Stephenson.
01:06So they knew he could handle it.
01:08And they made a decision.
01:09Why wait?
01:10You know, the Barkley deal was very rich, over 12 million a year.
01:13We know that McCaffrey got a monster extension.
01:16So when you really look at it, how much is really nine million?
01:18He's the seventh highest paid running back in the National Football League is Romandre
01:23Stephenson.
01:24And they're getting it early here.
01:25They're not going to wait and see the deals in freemason next year go up to 12, 14 million
01:29per season for the best young running backs.
01:32They got him at nine million.
01:33By the way, Josh Jacobs got 12 million.
01:35And he's got a one year structure.
01:36So this is their guy.
01:38There's no question about it.
01:39They're going to go forward with Romandre Stephenson as the guy.
01:43He has a four year extension.
01:45Now, as I understand it, I believe it's a two year structure.
01:48It's the this year plus the first year, mostly fully guaranteed.
01:52Then we'll see how just the third year.
01:54But the bottom line is for the near future, he's the running back.
01:57And they made that decision.
01:58They were pretty definitive.
01:59And Stephenson said recently to local media that he was close to getting the extension
02:04done.
02:05Now he's got it.
02:06There's no debate.
02:07It's not Antonio Gibson, who might be a third down back.
02:09It's clearly Romandre Stephenson.
02:12And again, at nine million per season, even Joe Mixon, Joe Mixon, who got 9.875 million
02:18in his new deal with the Texans.
02:20He's making more and he's older than Stephenson.
