JADE CHIPPS, 31, has never met her husband outside of prison - but she has got a life-size cutout of him to keep her company at home. Jade first got the idea to write to an inmate after watching an interview with a woman who met her husband through a prison pen-pal website. With nothing to lose, Jade went to a prison pen-pal website for inmates based close by to her home, where she came across her now husband, Chris. The couple now speak as much as three times a day on the phone and before the pandemic, Jade would see Chris once a month. However, Jade would advise others from pursuing an inmate relationship, as she admits it can be stressful. Once Chris is released, the couple plan to live in the house Chris bought Jade and start a family together.

00:51 I was a flight attendant and I saw a show where this lady was talking about how she met her husband from a pen pal page so I decided to check it out.
01:00 When I went on the page I saw Chris's picture and I decided to write him.
01:05 We went back and forth with writing and then we started talking on the phone.
01:10 And then I flew and met him in person and the rest is history.
01:15 The crime that Chris committed was burglary and identity theft.
01:20 He was sentenced to 31 years in prison and he has to serve 10.
01:25 So this is my photo album that I have of me and Chris.
01:30 I have a bunch of pictures and letters that he has sent me.
01:34 This is actually the first card he ever sent me.
01:38 I told my sisters, the people that I thought that wouldn't judge me right away.
01:43 And then I told my parents and they were not the happiest.
01:48 My mom told me that she didn't want that for me and that I shouldn't put my life on hold for someone that I don't really know.

02:20 So I mean it was a pretty ugly dress but there weren't many options for white dresses that would be allowable at the prison.

05:00 So what were your guys' initial reaction when you first found out about Chris?
05:05 I feel like we all were super shocked.
05:07 I was honestly really nervous for you because I've never even heard of that before.
05:11 So when you first said that I was just like, is that even a thing?
05:15 I kind of just wanted to know more what he did.
05:17 I mean if it was worse than what I thought it could have been because it could have been anything.
05:23 Have you considered that Chris might be different at a prison?
05:27 Yeah, just because he's been in prison so long, I worry that maybe he's institutionalized.
05:32 But he knows what he wants to do when he gets out.
05:35 He wants to impregnate me right away.
05:38 He wants to work when he gets out.
05:42 We're going to have a baby, hopefully.
05:44 I just think that it was worth it. I think you're at a good place right now.

05:50 I'm really happy that my friends and family have accepted Chris.

05:58 My message for people that have judged me is that people deserve second chances.
