00:06 Happy New Year!
00:08 It's Sat-E Day once again.
00:10 I'm Sat-E Niangi.
00:13 Welcome to WrestleTalk News and here's the top story.
00:19 Top story.
00:20 One of the major talking points of this week was regarding Triple H's major announcement
00:25 on WWE 24 preview on Thursday.
00:28 This huge news would ultimately be Trips just re-announcing old news and not WWE announcing
00:34 a partnership with a newly rebooted TNA as had been rumoured online.
00:39 But fear not, as some other WWE forbidden door collabs may be coming in 2024 after all.
00:46 According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, both Triple H and Nick
00:49 Khan are seeking out Japanese allies with the first step of the plan already executed,
00:55 that being NXT star Charlie Dempsey's recent crossover into All Japan Pro Wrestling.
01:00 As well as AJPW, WWE was also reportedly looking at a partnership with women's promotional
01:07 ally, with Stardom reportedly considered.
01:09 The juiciest of all though, according to Meltzer, there is talk internally in WWE of another
01:15 pursuit of a partnership with NJPW now that Hiroshi Tanahashi is president.
01:22 Something that would undoubtedly have implications on AEW's existing relationship.
01:26 But it may not just be NJPW in the middle of this perspective, WWE and AEW tug of war
01:32 as right now the hottest free agent in the game, Mercedes Monet, seems to be up for the
01:37 taking.
01:38 With WWE and Monet reportedly far apart on the finances of a potential deal, negotiation
01:44 momentum once again shifts to AEW this week, with it being reported by many sources that
01:49 the CEO is expected to join, a move that according to Meltzer, again is AEW's counterpunch
01:56 for WWE's much rumoured signing of Andrade "El Idolo".
02:01 This fighting spirit was seemingly echoed by an AEW source who told PW Insider "If
02:06 you don't think we're in the hunt, you are crazy!"
02:10 A WWE source on the other hand told PW Insider that they're still confident that Monet
02:14 will return.
02:15 Nothing has seemingly been signed yet in regards to a contract however, but stay tuned to WrestleTalk.com
02:23 for updates from one potential major WWE arrival to a major recent departure as we have an
02:29 update on Vince McMahon's former right hand man of destruction, Kevin Dunne.
02:35 Last week, WWE President Nick Khan confirmed Dunne's exit in an eternal WWE email where
02:40 he thanked him for his four decades of service.
02:43 How nice, quite refreshing to see such a wholesome split.
02:47 Oh wait, of course it wasn't.
02:51 According to PW Insider's Mike Johnson, Dunne didn't exit the company to retire
02:55 or sit on the porch for the rest of his days.
02:58 Instead there's a growing belief that he left the company due to feeling disrespected
03:03 for being a Vince McMahon guy according to a WWE source.
03:07 Dunne reportedly isn't even planning to retire at all, instead being open to get work
03:12 in film and TV in the future.
03:14 There you go, multiple cuts in your film and TV shows.
03:16 Who's doing that?
03:17 Might be Kevin Dunne.
03:18 The relationship between Dunne and WWE reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks with things getting
03:24 uglier after Dunne handed in his notice.
03:28 With Dunne reportedly not too keen to relinquish any control over production after ruling the
03:33 ruse for decades, and Endeavor reportedly also looking to cut costs, the split looks
03:38 to have been inevitable.
03:41 Now guys, next up we've got Pete Quinell back in 2024!
03:48 Our lord 2024, you got Roman Reigns, you got Pete Quinell doing SmackDown review.
03:52 Oh yeah, it's gonna be beautiful.
03:54 And again, I'll see you next Sat-E day.
03:57 Of course, the camera goes… blank.
04:03 Thank you Sat, and now it's time for my review of SmackDown New Year's Revolution
04:07 in about 5 minutes.
04:09 I really enjoy WWE bringing back defunct pay-per-view names for special episodes of TV, and I think
04:14 the extra hype that was brought with Raw being the Day 1 edition carried its expectations.
04:19 This episode of SmackDown… didn't.
04:22 It was a completely fine episode of TV, but definitely didn't feel like a big New Year
04:27 reset show like Raw did, so let's see why.
04:30 The show began with a recap of Rock's return on Raw, along with Roman Reigns arriving at
04:34 the show and laughing at the thought of Rock challenging him for his title.
04:37 We then had the finals of the United States Championship Tournament with Kevin Owens facing
04:41 Santos Escobar, and we even got a Logan Paul to join for commentary for this one.
04:45 The match itself was good, with Santos and KO bringing out their big moves.
04:48 It never seemed to reach that higher gear though, which stopped it from being a great
04:52 or excellent match.
04:53 In the end, Owens won clean with a Stunner after Humberto and Angel were driven out by
04:57 Wacking Wild and Cruz del Toro, Logan cut a promo on why a Canadian can't win the
05:01 US title for some nice heat as they were in Vancouver, and KO knocked him out with a cast
05:05 on his arm.
05:06 Looking forward to that match at the Rumble should be a great time.
05:08 Cameron Grimes backstage said "glad to see you met Kevin" to Logan Paul, Grayson Waller
05:12 and Austin Theory, and they got a little shovey, which set up a match between Grimes and Waller
05:16 for next week.
05:17 Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits cut an in-ring promo next where Lashley said he wants
05:21 to get back to being the All Mighty in 2024, and declared himself for the Royal Rumble
05:26 match.
05:27 The Street Profits want the tag belts too, so they issue a warning to Judgment Day on
05:30 Raw, but that's when they're interrupted by Karrion Kross' Titantron.
05:33 The lights go out, and Kross walks out on the stage with Scarlett, and then walking
05:37 out behind the two is Paul Ellering.
05:40 AOP finally made their WWE return, swarming the ring and hitting a Super Collider on The
05:45 Street Profits.
05:46 Kross hit whatever his move is called on Lashley, the pump handle swinging release?
05:50 DDT?
05:51 Maybe?
05:52 I think this new group looks very cool.
05:54 Kross has always looked very impressive, and I've always been a fan of AOP's presence.
05:59 I'm quietly curious about this group and what they can achieve, but I don't know
06:02 if this fixes the larger problem with Kross and his lack of connection with the audience
06:06 when the bell rings.
06:07 It's nice to see AOP though, I hope they get a good showing in the tag division.
06:10 Io Sky defended her Women's title against Meechan next, which was also a good match.
06:14 The crowd weren't into Meechan to start with, but after some big moves they started
06:17 to get going a little bit, like Meechan hitting a second rope Styles Clash, which was rad.
06:22 However not long after, Io countered a Meechan dive by moving after the way, Samoa Joe approves,
06:26 and capitalised with some knees and a moonsault to retain.
06:29 A good match.
06:30 Roman Reigns & Heyman backstage cut a promo on The Rock, AJ Styles, LA Knight and Randy
06:33 Orton saying there's only two ways to go viral - to date Taylor Swift, and to call
06:37 out Roman Reigns.
06:38 The Rock wants a shortcut into the headlines, but he's not been invited to a dinner of
06:42 relevancy yet.
06:43 It was a typically great Heyman promo.
06:45 Damage Control backstage celebrated Io Sky's win, and Bayley continues to hype her plan,
06:50 saying next the Kabuki Warriors need to win the tag gold, and then she can win the Royal
06:54 Rumble and take the title off Rhea Ripley.
06:56 They're interrupted by Bianca Belair though, who say Bayley won't be winning the Rumble,
07:00 she will.
07:01 After she leaves, Io Sky via Dakota Kai said that Bayley needs to sort out Bianca Belair,
07:05 we don't want her interfering with your plan.
07:08 There was a lot of stink put on the "your plan" part of that sentence, I'm all for
07:12 these little subtle teasers of what's to come.
07:14 Pretty Deadly faced Butch and a mystery partner next who turned out to be…
07:18 Tyler Bate!
07:19 I'm sure Luke is very excited somewhere, and I was too, it's great to see Bate finally
07:23 on the main roster, because he's been main roster ready since about 2017.
07:27 The crowd didn't care though, and understandably so considering they've not been told who
07:31 Bate is or why they should care.
07:33 They popped a little for some of his offense, but it tells you what kind of audience it
07:36 is when they don't react to some fantastic little chain mat wrestling, but do go crazy
07:40 for the airplane spin.
07:41 Tyler Bate got the win after a double Tyler Driver, and it was nice seeing Bate wrestle,
07:45 but I felt like this should have been made a bit more of a big deal than it was.
07:49 Nick Aldis backstage sat down with Ashante The Adonis, who said he's been itching for
07:53 an opportunity, and Aldis said he's got some opportunities that he'll be excited
07:57 to hear.
07:58 I'm curious, though I suspect this will just be a way to have Karrion Kross murder
08:01 him next week to qualify for the Royal Rumble or something.
08:04 And then we had our main event, a number one contenders match to determine Roman Reigns'
08:09 challenger at the Royal Rumble, AJ Styles vs. Randy Orton vs. LA Knight.
08:13 Yeah.
08:14 The match was predictably very good, with each person looking like they were closing
08:17 in on victory at various points.
08:19 Knight hit the BFT on Orton, but Styles stopped the referee from counting three.
08:23 Orton hit an RKO off of Springboarding Styles, but Knight returned the favour, pulling the
08:27 ref out of the ring to stop the three count.
08:28 Knight also got busted open from a Styles Springboard 450, but after the match was reaching
08:32 that highest gear, the Bloodline entered and beat up everyone in the match, with a Powerbomb
08:37 to Styles, a Superman Punch and Spear to Knight, and a Spear/Sumo and Spike combo to Orton.
08:42 I then wrote in my notes while I was watching, "This will result in a fatal four way at
08:47 the Rumble and I'm going to be pissed."
08:50 And right on cue, Nick Alice, who was at ringside to watch the match, told Paul Heyman off mic
08:54 that it will be a fatal four way at the Rumble as the show went off the air.
08:57 I really don't like this finish, for several reasons.
09:01 Firstly, Roman, have you ever watched the show before?
09:04 You know that if you beat up everyone in a number one contenders match, they all get
09:07 put into the match.
09:08 Secondly, the match never ended.
09:10 It's a no DQ match, I think it's still going on right now.
09:13 It's a lame cop out way to get to the four way, when if they wanted a four way, they
09:17 could have done something a bit more interesting, like a three way pin, which still wouldn't
09:21 have been perfect, but setting up a non-convoluted four way from a number one contenders match
09:25 is always tricky.
09:27 There's also the fact that Aldis announced this four way only to Heyman and off mic so
09:31 the cameras could pick it up, but not the live crowd or Roman, which I think would have
09:35 helped the moment shine a bit more.
09:37 It was just an odd finish, like what was Roman's plan here?
09:41 He just beat up his contenders because… he wanted to?
09:45 He wanted to make a statement?
09:47 I can't see a good enough reason for it, and it seems very out of character for the
09:51 quite calculated Roman.
09:52 So overall, as mentioned before, this show didn't really live up to the hype of the
09:57 New Year's Revolution billing.
09:59 The wrestling never reached excellent territory, always being just a step down from where it
10:02 could be.
10:03 We got a new faction, which is superficially exciting, but I'm still concerned about
10:07 Carrying Cross Reboot Project #4 and how it's ultimately different from 1-3.
10:11 There was a low key debut for Tyler Bate which was good but could have been more, and that
10:15 was about it.
10:17 This SmackDown was a low 3/5.
10:19 Now check out Luke and Dan talking about January's biggest movie releases in City World's What's
10:23 On by clicking the video on the left.
