Head coach Dan Lanning analyzes Oregon Football's historic 2024 recruiting class on National Signing Day.
Transcript
00:00 All right, good day for the Ducks.
00:02 We can - got to bringing a lot of great pieces of the program,
00:06 but we can go ahead and open it up for questions.
00:07 Scott, right here with Daniel.
00:10 Just one thing to go out and sign 20-plus players
00:12 and flip a couple, but what does it say about this class
00:15 that you entered today with so many commits,
00:17 and all those commits so far have signed with the team
00:20 and not flipped elsewhere?
00:22 Yeah, I just think it speaks to the consistency of,
00:24 you know, of our approach, and ultimately,
00:26 you always want to focus on the guys you get
00:27 and not the guys you don't.
00:28 And we did a good job of identifying targets
00:31 that fit our needs, what we were looking for,
00:33 but also fit our values of what we want in this program.
00:38 Front left, James.
00:39 To have the top-ranked class in program history
00:44 and be in the top five with all the teams
00:46 who are vying for playoff spots,
00:48 it's what everybody wants to do and build towards.
00:50 What is it like to execute it and deliver on it?
00:53 Yeah, I just think it shows the staff
00:55 and the program's work that they've put forward,
00:58 and then the vision for the program and where we're headed.
01:00 So, obviously, the best way to enhance your team
01:03 is to enhance your talent,
01:05 and then it goes into developing that talent.
01:07 So when we have that, we've got a great chance
01:08 to be successful here.
01:10 Same room on the left here. Eric.
01:12 Can you speak to maybe your staff's relentlessness,
01:14 recruiting, obviously flipping a couple guys on signing day?
01:18 Sometimes maybe you give up, but you guys didn't.
01:20 Yeah, it's just an everyday approach,
01:21 and I think we've got a staff
01:23 that's been doing this for a while
01:24 and recognizes it's not about the short term.
01:26 It's about being able to do something every single day,
01:29 focus on the long-term goals,
01:31 and these guys that we're going to get
01:34 are guys that we think can really enhance
01:36 what we've built and already established here.
01:38 So having guys that are open to being at Oregon
01:42 and realize what Oregon can be,
01:44 and then having a staff that's willing to work
01:46 to go get those guys.
01:48 All the way in the back, Matt.
01:49 Where the last 24, 48, 72 hours
01:53 just like putting the final pieces to this class together?
01:56 Well, you keep your phone plugged in, right?
01:59 It was a lot of work. It's a lot of work for our staff,
02:01 a lot of work for everybody here in the program,
02:05 but that's the way these days are supposed to look, right?
02:08 It requires hard work to be able to get results,
02:10 and again, I can't praise our staff
02:13 enough for doing a great job.
02:14 I can't commend the players that made the decision
02:16 to come to Oregon.
02:18 Every one of them certainly won't regret it.
02:21 We're going to give them our best every day.
02:22 All right, Zach.
02:24 I think there's a lot of six-foot-eight tackles
02:26 kind of roaming around in college football.
02:28 What does someone like Shaq, with the size and athleticism
02:30 that he has, what does he bring to the program?
02:32 Shaq's a fun one. He's got a great personality.
02:35 You know, that's a great example of a guy that, from afar,
02:38 you know, Oregon was always his dream school,
02:40 and, you know, actually started to court us
02:42 before we started to court him,
02:43 but you watch the film, and he stands out,
02:46 but he's one that, you know, is extremely talented.
02:48 I think he's going to bring an energy to that room,
02:51 you know, and he's one that every single one of us
02:53 can remember once you see him in person,
02:55 you know, what he looks like
02:56 and what he can do for this program.
02:58 Front left, James.
03:01 How important was what Troy and Tez and T-Ferg
03:05 did this season to attracting talent
03:08 at both receiver and tight end in this class
03:10 and in future cycles?
03:11 Yeah, huge. I mean, I think early on,
03:15 you know, when you come to a program,
03:16 you tell people what you hope to do, right?
03:18 And after you're able to have a couple seasons,
03:21 you can point to what you have done.
03:22 And guys like Troy and Tez and Bo
03:25 and what we've done on offense the last two years
03:27 and what we've done on defense, I think all those things,
03:29 you know, attribute to being able to point to success
03:32 and what it'll look like for people here in the future.
03:34 Second row on the left, Eric.
03:36 Class is primarily prep guys,
03:38 but Sione is a Lillen Junior College player.
03:40 Why was he attractive? And then positionally,
03:42 does he provide some versatility with his size and skills?
03:44 Yeah, where he's coming from, you know,
03:45 Coach Tolick does a phenomenal job.
03:47 He's a guy that we've had, you know, great relationships
03:49 with in the past and past stops at other places I've been.
03:54 And he spoke to this guy early on,
03:56 was one that we could identify that we knew fit
03:59 what we were looking for.
04:00 You know, he's been in a great program.
04:03 He's a guy that has length and speed and is an asset,
04:07 you know, for what we're looking for in the back end.
04:09 All the way in the back, Matt.
04:11 Dylan Gresham, just keeping him, the importance of that.
04:14 And his junior year, it's like a career's worth of stats.
04:17 Just what does he bring to the table for you guys?
04:20 Yeah, Dylan's one of my favorite players,
04:21 I mean, in this class.
04:23 I've enjoyed watching him and recruiting him for a long time.
04:25 You know, saw him early on at Redlands Camp
04:28 a couple summers ago.
04:29 And even after he committed, he's a guy that continued to come
04:32 and compete every opportunity he got.
04:34 So, he's a hungry player.
04:36 He's a talented player that I think can do great things
