00:02 - Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles,
00:10 the people show, checking the pulse of Husker Nation,
00:12 brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:15 You know, this is my gut reaction to Chubba Purdy
00:17 entering the transfer portal,
00:19 but before I get to that, okay,
00:22 I wanna say thank you.
00:23 I wanna say thank you to the people.
00:25 I wanna say thank you to everyone who watches this show,
00:28 who supports the program,
00:30 who supports me covering Husker football
00:33 for a kid who took speech therapy K through five.
00:38 Mary Shaw, you did a great job,
00:39 loved your animal crackers.
00:40 When I would say the word right back in the day,
00:42 and a kid who was terrified of public speaking,
00:45 and there were certain times
00:46 when I wasn't the biggest fans of some folks in the media.
00:49 There is a lot of good people in the media though.
00:52 I would have never imagined this.
00:54 So thank you when I decided to take this show on its own
00:58 in January of last year.
01:00 It was in large part due to the people telling me
01:03 they wanted it, and I appreciate your support.
01:05 So thank you for all of that.
01:07 Also, I don't know when another Carriker Chronicles
01:10 is gonna happen 'cause of the holiday break.
01:11 So if I don't see you fine folks again, Merry Christmas.
01:14 Now I will say this, okay.
01:17 I might do another show tomorrow.
01:19 For the love of all that's holy,
01:20 I just got done talking about how excited I am
01:22 about this recruiting class, and I am.
01:25 It's a top 20 class,
01:26 and I think there's some underrated guys in there.
01:28 And I'm chilling, I'm hanging out,
01:30 I'm wearing socks with sandals, yeah, I do that.
01:33 I got my stretchy pants on, yeah, I just admitted that.
01:36 I at least threw on a halfway decent shirt,
01:38 and I'm chilling, I get the news about Chubba Purdy
01:41 hitting the transfer portal.
01:42 You never know when a Carriker Chronicles is gonna pop up.
01:45 So make sure you never miss it.
01:47 Hit the subscribe button.
01:48 And if you're at least just a little bit surprised
01:52 by the news that Chubba's hitting the portal,
01:54 smash that like button.
01:56 Now here's the deal.
01:58 I think part of the reason I was surprised,
02:00 and I usually have a pretty good pulse on things,
02:02 not always, but more often than not,
02:04 because of things that Matt Ruhl
02:05 said in his press conference today.
02:07 He talked about, specifically, Chubba Purdy
02:09 and Heinrich Harburg deserve a chance to compete
02:11 for a starting quarterback job
02:13 without someone older than them being brought in.
02:15 I'm paraphrasing, of course.
02:17 And then, so specifically, Purdy and Harburg.
02:20 Sounds like he planned on them being there.
02:22 So, kinda seems like it's a surprise to him as well,
02:25 if you ask me.
02:26 'Cause then he also says,
02:27 "We have four young, talented quarterbacks
02:30 "in that quarterback room."
02:31 Okay, he decided they were gonna go young
02:34 with the quarterback room and they wanted to train them.
02:36 That was his big thing.
02:37 You don't plan on training somebody
02:39 and dropping someone's name if you think they're leaving.
02:42 Okay, so that's why I was a little bit surprised by this.
02:45 Again, socks and sandals, stretchy pants on,
02:47 enjoying my evening.
02:49 But for me, here's the deal.
02:51 I actually, I would've predicted,
02:53 first of all, quarterback battle, all off-season,
02:56 true quarterback battle this year, okay?
02:58 But my early prediction,
03:00 without a single 2024 practice having even happened yet,
03:04 mostly 'cause it's 2023,
03:06 I thought I would've predicted that Chubba Purdy
03:08 most likely would've had the advantage
03:11 when it comes to being our game one starter next year.
03:13 Okay, and it wasn't some big advantage.
03:15 But when you compare him to some of the other guys
03:18 in that room, he's got experience, he's got talent,
03:20 he's got ability, he's got a little bit of,
03:23 some of the things that I felt like some of the other guys
03:25 didn't have, and to be clear,
03:26 the other guys have a lot of talent, boatloads.
03:27 I just thought he had that small edge
03:29 to maybe even take a majority of the snaps
03:31 throughout next year.
03:32 Now, you never know how that's gonna go
03:34 'cause look how this last season went.
03:36 But here's my thing, okay?
03:39 This decision was probably about year two, though.
03:43 It probably wasn't about next year.
03:45 It was probably about two years from now.
03:47 Because two years from now, okay,
03:49 when Dylan Raiola is probably going to be,
03:52 if he doesn't this fall already,
03:54 gonna be getting heavily pushed.
03:56 And I don't mean pushed as in thrust into the spotlight,
03:58 but I mean the expectation is as year two rolls around,
04:01 he's gonna be heavily pushed to be at the top end
04:04 of that quarterback competition
04:06 here at the University of Nebraska.
04:08 Now, you gotta keep in mind,
04:10 that'd be Purdy's senior year, okay?
04:13 And Purdy now can go somewhere else.
04:15 The rumor is it's Boise State.
04:17 It's probably one of the likely favorite
04:18 landing spots anyways.
04:20 Eric Chanander, our former defensive coordinator.
04:22 Is Eric Chanander poaching our quarterbacks?
04:24 Like, is he doing that?
04:26 I'm kinda joking, but kinda not.
04:28 Okay, now Purdy can go somewhere
04:30 and he can be a two-year starter, okay?
04:32 Whether it's Boise State or somewhere else.
04:35 Now, this is Chubba's second time transferring, okay?
04:39 He was a four-star recruit coming out of high school
04:41 and then he transferred from Florida State to Nebraska.
04:44 He's got his degree, so he can immediately go play
04:47 wherever he ends up transferring without any issues.
04:49 So the question for Nebraska is, now what?
04:52 Now what?
04:53 Okay, our current quarterback room
04:55 consists of two true freshmen, okay?
04:57 Dylan Raiola, Daniel Kalin,
04:59 who I both think very highly of.
05:01 Both Elite 11 quarterbacks.
05:03 We've got two Elite 11 quarterbacks
05:05 in that quarterback room right now.
05:06 Okay, but they're obviously still true freshmen.
05:09 A guy, I just love how he plays in Heinrich Harburg.
05:13 Okay, a top 20 duo threat quarterback
05:15 coming out of high school.
05:17 Probably, of all these players,
05:19 the least pure quarterback of the three.
05:21 Not saying he can't do it, can't play it,
05:23 'cause he obviously did it.
05:24 Gonna get better, love him, okay?
05:27 But I even talked about,
05:30 after Dylan Raiola committed to Nebraska,
05:32 you know, the potential of him maybe moving positions.
05:35 That rule made clear that wasn't gonna happen today
05:37 and the press conference is definitely
05:38 still not gonna happen.
05:39 And the kid can definitely still start for us
05:41 and play for us, I love him.
05:43 Okay, but you look at that quarterback room now,
05:46 those are the three guys we have.
05:47 All right, real quick,
05:48 DPS Concrete Construction is the sponsor of this show
05:52 because they're a quality company
05:53 ran by a quality individual,
05:54 and Jason Armstrong, they do quality work.
05:57 Okay, they're a great employer
05:58 if you're looking to do concrete-type work.
06:00 Okay, if you're looking to have concrete-type work done,
06:03 check out dpsconstruction.net.
06:06 Now here, in my opinion,
06:07 I do think we have to get a transfer
06:09 for a quarterback at this point.
06:10 It's gotta be the right fit though,
06:12 which is gonna be a bit of a challenge
06:13 and I'm gonna dive into that in a second.
06:15 Now, let me just throw a name out there,
06:16 KC Thompson, torn ACL?
06:18 I don't know, would he ever come back?
06:20 I have, I don't see, I don't know right now.
06:22 I have not even brought his name up to anybody,
06:24 I think I'm gonna have to do so.
06:26 So here's some of the top transfer quarterback options.
06:30 Now as you might imagine, they're getting,
06:32 they're not getting thin, they are thin.
06:34 All right, Dylan Gabriel is the top quarterback
06:37 in the transfer portal going to Oregon.
06:38 Riley Leonard going to Notre Dame.
06:40 Will Howard, most likely going to USC,
06:42 it looks like.
06:43 Cam Ward, University of Miami.
06:47 Kyle McCord, Syracuse.
06:49 And then you get down to the,
06:51 to number, the 17th overall ranked transfer quarterback,
06:53 DJ Ungoleli, okay, a five star coming out of high school.
06:56 Clemson to Oregon State.
06:57 It looks like he's trending towards Louisville
06:59 or possibly Florida State.
07:01 Okay, but you kinda have to break into that mold
07:04 if you're Nebraska.
07:05 Now we gotta muscle out Louisville,
07:06 we gotta muscle out Florida State
07:08 and I don't know that they had any prior relationship
07:10 with him before.
07:11 It would be challenging.
07:12 You look at the guys that are more realistic.
07:14 Okay, the number seven overall ranked quarterback,
07:18 I'm sorry, DJ was number six,
07:20 I read a wrong number here on my phone.
07:22 Okay, there's number seven ranked quarterback
07:24 and the first realistic option
07:26 that's still got a lot of options,
07:27 like his options are open, I should say.
07:30 And number 18 overall player in the transfer portal
07:32 right now is Arkansas quarterback,
07:35 former Arkansas quarterback.
07:36 He's a senior.
07:37 I don't think that's gonna excite Matt Rule, KJ Jefferson.
07:40 A four star transfer portal player
07:42 and he's played for three offensive coordinators
07:44 in five years.
07:45 So that's something he's been dealing with.
07:46 The next guy on the list to drop down
07:48 to the next reasonably available player
07:50 that's realistic at all,
07:52 okay, number 11 quarterback,
07:53 number five overall transfer portal player,
07:55 Jordan McLeod out of James Madison, also a senior.
07:58 He's a four star player in the transfer portal.
08:01 Okay, number 15 quarterback available.
08:04 You keep dropping down to who's not already committed.
08:06 And the number 61 overall player,
08:08 USC quarterback, Malachi Nelson.
08:11 Now he's a freshman, 63, 182 pounds.
08:13 He was a five star guy coming out of high school,
08:15 currently a four star in the transfer portal.
08:16 Okay, could be intriguing.
08:18 I'll get to that in a second.
08:19 I wanna get ahead of myself actually.
08:21 Number 20 quarterback, 135 player overall
08:23 in the transfer portal,
08:24 Hawaii, former Hawaii quarterback,
08:27 Brayden Shager, a junior,
08:28 the same year as Heinrich Harburg,
08:30 63, 200 pounds, a three star.
08:32 Okay, and the number 22 quarterback
08:35 in the transfer portal,
08:36 all right, 139 overall players,
08:38 sophomore, Oregon, former sophomore,
08:40 Oregon quarterback, Ty Thompson,
08:42 six, four, 215.
08:43 He went from a five star player out of high school
08:45 to a three star in the transfer portal.
08:48 Now, there's more guys, okay?
08:50 A guy like Malik Murphy from Texas,
08:52 who transferred, is in the transfer portal right now,
08:55 even though Texas is in the CFP.
08:57 I'm rooting against Texas and I hope they lose,
09:00 but man, if Quentin Ares goes down
09:02 and then they gotta play with their third string quarterback,
09:03 I don't wanna watch a CFP game like that.
09:06 I want it to be a close loss for Texas, to be clear.
09:09 Okay, now he's young, he's talented,
09:11 but it looks like he's probably trending towards Duke,
09:15 it seems.
09:15 All right, now to be clear,
09:17 I'm not even talking about players that,
09:20 hey, do they fit our scheme or not?
09:22 I think they're tweaking the scheme a little bit anyways,
09:25 based on the guys they've been recruiting.
09:27 I'm not even talking about guys
09:28 that I know we have previous relationships with.
09:30 I'm just talking about quarterbacks, okay,
09:32 that are just available.
09:34 Obviously there's more,
09:35 and there's no need to panic at this point,
09:37 and maybe I'm wrong,
09:40 but I think we need to get a transfer portal quarterback,
09:42 and I do think there needs to be a sense of urgency
09:46 when it comes to this, okay?
09:48 Now my wife,
09:49 she's like, "Why are you doing this video?
09:54 "This isn't a big deal."
09:55 So maybe this isn't a big deal.
09:57 I feel like it is.
09:58 I feel like he would have been the guy
10:00 that I would have predicted to at least start the season,
10:02 maybe take a majority of snaps this upcoming season,
10:05 and I feel like Matt Ruhle probably was not expecting this,
10:10 so I feel like it's at least somewhat of an eye-catcher,
10:13 okay?
10:14 I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.
10:16 Now, questions for you fine folks at home.
10:18 Let me know in the comments below your thoughts.
10:21 All right, how important is it
10:22 that Nebraska lands a transfer portal quarterback?
10:25 Just let me know.
10:26 Very, in the middle, or not that important?
10:29 Number two, do you also believe, okay,
10:31 this is connected to Dylan Raiola signing with the Huskers?
10:35 Just simply answer yes or no, okay?
10:38 Or had we brought in Kyle McCord,
10:40 would this have happened anyways?
10:41 Or some other guy, would this have happened anyways,
10:43 is my point.
10:44 All right, number three,
10:45 how comfortable are you with Heinrich Harburg,
10:48 or a true freshman, whether it be Daniel Kaelin,
10:51 Dylan Raiola, starting game one for Nebraska next year?
10:55 Are you very comfortable with it,
10:57 kind of comfortable with it,
10:59 or not comfortable with it at all?
11:01 All right, ladies and gentlemen,
11:02 until next time, happy holidays,
11:05 go Big Red, and always remember,
11:07 to do it better.
11:08 (sighs)
