00:00 Welcome to the Carriker Chronicles, the people's show, checking the pulse of an excited Husker
00:14 nation.
00:15 Ladies and gentlemen, this show is brought to you by DPS Concrete Construction.
00:19 Check them out at dpsconstruction.net.
00:22 This is my gut reaction to Nebraska basketball not just beating the number one team in the
00:27 country, the Purdue Boilermakers, easy for me to say, but beating down Purdue last night
00:35 when they won 88-72.
00:40 Now real quick, ladies and gentlemen, if you've followed me over the years, you're probably
00:43 aware of this.
00:44 If you haven't followed me, I'm just a sports junkie.
00:47 I grew up playing four sports all the way through middle school, three sports all the
00:51 way through high school, not just high school teams but club teams and the like.
00:55 I am a sports junkie.
00:57 So if you want to be kept up to date, and I'm just doing more and more content all the
01:02 time, the Carriker Chronicles keeps evolving.
01:04 If you want to be kept up to date on all the big things happening in every Nebraska sport,
01:11 smash that subscribe button.
01:13 And if you're as excited as I am about the Huskers win last night in basketball over
01:18 number one Purdue, then hit the like button.
01:21 Ladies and gentlemen, 14,106 people, Nebraska fans, including Matt Rule, rushed and stormed
01:30 the basketball court last night after the Nebraska basketball game.
01:33 Now I don't know if all 14,106 people stormed the court, but you get my point.
01:37 That's the amount of people that were there.
01:38 Everybody seemed to rush the court.
01:40 It was a phenomenal sight to behold.
01:42 Now, this is Nebraska's first win over a number one team in 42 seasons when they beat Missouri.
01:50 In 1982.
01:51 That was on the road, by the way.
01:54 And their first win at home over a number one team in 60 seasons when they beat Michigan
02:00 in 1964.
02:01 Now admittedly, I was really tired last night or I would have done the gut reaction last
02:06 night, so I tried to get up early this morning and do it as quickly as I could.
02:09 So my notes are a bit crazy, so bear with me, but let's light this candle.
02:14 Alright, I want to start off by talking about Kese Tominaga.
02:17 This guy, I know he's been talked about by other people, but this guy is just fun to
02:20 watch.
02:21 Not only is he a great player, he's just fun to watch.
02:28 I love watching him.
02:30 He clearly loves basketball and he knows how to light up a crowd.
02:35 Now if you haven't heard this before, he's sometimes also known as the Japanese Steph
02:38 Curry because he can legit, just like Steph himself, he can light it up from three point
02:43 range.
02:44 He's a former, unheralded junior college basketball recruit.
02:52 Last night he had 19 points, he was the leading scorer for the Huskers, four assists, he led
02:56 Nebraska with five threes and shot over 50% beyond the arc and he also made all of his
03:04 free throws as well.
03:06 Now the Huskers on the season, we're going to get to the game specifically here in a
03:09 minute, don't worry.
03:10 The Huskers on the season are 13-3.
03:12 They started off hot 8-0.
03:15 After their first 14 games, they were 13-1.
03:18 That's one of the best starts to a season since the '90-'91 Nebraska basketball season.
03:24 They've won six of their last seven games.
03:28 They're tied for fifth in the Big Ten, although not really, because the two teams they're
03:33 tied with are Purdue and Indiana, whom they both beat.
03:36 They beat the Hoosiers, 86-70, at that time snapping a seven game losing streak to Indiana.
03:43 They got a season high 28 points from Tomonaga.
03:46 After the game, Horyberg called that the most complete game of the season at that point.
03:53 I would say last night was the best game of the Fred Horyberg era, period, versus Purdue.
04:00 Now that 16 point win over Indiana at the time was the largest margin of victory in
04:04 the series dating back to 19-20, and the Huskers currently are actually only a half game out
04:09 of second place in the Big Ten.
04:11 Now you go back to the game last night.
04:14 The win, the separation of points, the atmosphere.
04:16 Here's what it came back to for me.
04:19 It came back to effort, energy, passion, hustle.
04:24 This is a flat out dangerous team.
04:26 We don't know how good they are, or are not just yet, but this is a flat out dangerous
04:31 basketball team that is fun to watch.
04:35 And dare I say, last night the atmosphere was electrifying.
04:40 If you smell, la la la la la, when Nebraska basketball is cooking.
04:44 Sometimes WWE just comes out of me, as you know.
04:47 Now again, who knows how the rest of the season is going to go.
04:50 I'm excited.
04:51 I dare I say, got high expectations, but we'll see how it ends.
04:54 But if I'm the coach of another basketball team right now, I do not want to play Nebraska.
05:01 That I know.
05:02 Let's talk about the game specifically, just a smidge.
05:05 Nebraska had a 13-0 run to end the first half to go up by 11.
05:11 This was a team effort.
05:12 Sam Hoiberg sparked that run, and Purdue did fight back.
05:18 They made it close.
05:19 You knew they were going to.
05:20 They weren't just going to lay down.
05:21 But Nebraska went on an 11-0 run in the second half, went up 65-52, sparked by CJ Wolter,
05:29 who's 16 points off the bench was third most on the team.
05:34 This could potentially, possibly be a program-changing win.
05:40 I kind of feel like it is.
05:42 We'll see, but I kind of do.
05:44 This is obviously not your typical Nebraska basketball team, if you've been watching them
05:47 at all this year.
05:50 No this does not produce first loss, but that doesn't devalue beating the number one team
05:55 in the nation by 16 points in that type of atmosphere.
05:59 Unless you're like a John Wooden coached UCLA team in the late 60's, early 70's, nobody
06:05 goes undefeated in basketball.
06:08 In case you didn't know, I thought this was quite interesting.
06:11 John Wooden was the first ever, he was actually a point guard at Purdue.
06:15 That's the connection and segue here.
06:17 He was the first ever three-time All-American in college basketball history, and he was
06:22 the first ever human being to go into the College Basketball Hall of Fame as not just
06:27 a coach, but a player as well.
06:32 The Huskers, in the past few years, haven't always shot the best from the free throw line,
06:37 but they shot 84% from the free throw stripe last night.
06:45 When you talk about Tomonaga himself, he made 86% of his three-pointers.
06:53 As I mentioned, this is the best game of the Fred Hoiberg era.
06:56 Bryce Williams, he had 9 points, 9 assists, 11 rebounds, almost a triple-double.
07:02 And a couple of big block shots at the end of the game as well.
07:06 Again, I mentioned Sam Hoiberg, big spark off the bench.
07:09 The Huskers shot 61% from three-point range.
07:12 Purdue shot 39.4%.
07:14 But let's be real, that's about where Purdue shoots from three-point range.
07:19 High 30s, low 40s, it's not like they had a bad night or off-night shooting or this
07:23 was a fluke.
07:24 That is not what this was.
07:25 In fact, overall to start the game, Purdue made 7 of their first 8 shots.
07:31 Yet, Nebraska still built an 8-2 early lead, setting the tone for the game.
07:39 Some other thoughts on the game.
07:40 Purdue has the defending player of the year in Zach E.
07:44 Purdue's center.
07:45 The dude is 7'4", 300 pounds, he had a 6-inch height advantage on his defender, but that
07:52 didn't seem to bother anybody from Nebraska.
07:54 Mr. Eadie, very frustrated.
07:57 Couple of air balls early on, still working on that hook shot just a smidge.
08:03 But the first half, and really throughout the game, but Nebraska clogged the paint with
08:08 multiple defenders and held Eadie to only two first-half points.
08:14 Fred Hoiberg and the Huskers game plan was clearly to take Eadie out of the equation
08:19 or make his life much more difficult and let the other Boilermakers shoot from the perimeter.
08:25 It kind of turned into a little bit of a shootout, which Nebraska clearly was fine with.
08:32 And it's clearly what they wanted.
08:33 Purdue shot 13 of 33 when it came to three-pointers, Nebraska was 14 of 23 on threes, and this
08:40 game plan really paid off for the Huskers.
08:42 This was a full whistle-to-whistle, beginning-to-end, 40-minute game effort.
08:50 And just about every single person on the team had a major contribution in the game
08:58 as well.
08:59 Here are the questions I have for you fine folks at home.
09:01 1.
09:02 Let me know in the comments below.
09:03 2.
09:04 Should Nebraska basketball be ranked after this?
09:06 I feel like that's a dumb question.
09:08 Let me know in the comments below the easy answer.
09:10 3.
09:11 Will the Huskers make the NCAA Tournament?
09:15 4.
09:16 Will Nebraska win their first ever NCAA Tournament game?
