00:00 The launching of the MATATAG program to resolve fundamental problems in basic education,
00:05 putting in place the procurement strand for school infrastructure and facilities
00:11 to address classroom shortage. Over 2,000 classrooms constructed and over a thousand repaired.
00:17 These are but a few of what the Department of Education touts as a year of new beginnings
00:23 that our Kenneth Paciente sums up in his report.
00:28 A year of beginning. This is how the Education Department described the year 2023. Looking back
00:34 at this year, the Department is proud of some of their achievements for the good of the education
00:38 in the country, including the launching of the MATATAG agenda to solve the challenges in basic
00:44 education. Also, the establishment of procurement strand and school infrastructure and facilities
00:49 strand to address the lack of classrooms. In fact, the DepEd has built up to 2,201 classrooms this
00:55 year. More than 1,000 classrooms have been repaired, while more than 80 health facilities
01:01 have been built. According to the DepEd, although there is a blended learning modality caused by the
01:05 pandemic, the in-person classes are still better.
01:24 DepEd's construction of the Last Mile School classrooms has also been successful, which today
01:30 has reached 45. It also addressed the challenge when it comes to internet connectivity. 25 schools
01:35 have Starlink connection already, while 2,000 schools have been provided with satellites.
01:40 The DepEd also launched the MATATAG curriculum aimed to reduce the burden of students on their
01:44 study load or number of subjects. It was initially implemented in 33 schools in seven regions of the
01:50 country. DepEd also launched the National Learning Camps this year to recover from the learning loss
01:55 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plus the Learning Rights Protection Office and Learners' TeleSafe
02:00 Contact Center Helpline to ensure the safety of students.
02:03 We still have many challenges. Our journey is still far, but we are slowly moving forward.
02:11 With the help of not only DepEd's colleagues, but also using the whole-of-nation approach,
02:18 we can gradually implement the reforms that we want.
02:21 DepEd has also advanced additional funding to ensure the proper nutrition of students.
02:27 It has also not forgotten the welfare of the teachers. That's why it seeks to publish the
02:31 guidelines for removing the admin tasks and duties from their workload. The DepEd is also
02:36 in the process of accepting 5,000 administrative personnel to perform administrative tasks in the
02:42 schools. We are focused on that. The final draft is already finished. It's just undergoing legal
02:48 review. We're expecting that before the year ends, we will release the guidelines. We noticed that
02:56 that's the most frequent complaint from the field, that the admin tasks are really lacking.
03:01 The DepEd assured to strengthen its various programs next year,
03:05 including Catch Up Friday so students can learn more. Kenneth, patient for the nation.
