00:00 How's it going everybody? Randall Sweet, All Sooners.com, here to talk more about OU's 2024 recruiting class.
00:06 We're going to talk about Devon Mitchell, the talented tight end that I'm sure many Sooner fans are already well aware of.
00:12 If you'll remember, Devon Mitchell was a 2025 tight end recruit at Allen High School,
00:17 ended up moving to Los Alamitos High School in California, where again, four-star recruit.
00:22 When he announced that he was committing to Oklahoma, he announced he would reclassify to 2024.
00:27 He was one of the top 2025 tight ends in the nation.
00:30 Now he's rated the number nine tight end, top 94 player in the country.
00:35 So again, still very highly regarded, even though he's going to come into college a little bit younger than most of the other people in his class.
00:42 Now, Mitchell at Allen High School was teammates with Michael Hawkins, where I think you really get to see what makes those two guys so special.
00:52 Michael Hawkins was able to scramble around and find Devon Mitchell deep down the field, who uses athleticism, his size, and then again, speed.
01:01 When you have to put a guy who's bigger on Devon Mitchell because a normal defensive back just has no chance against a guy who's 6'4", 245 pounds.
01:09 When you put that bigger guy on him, he's athletic enough to outrun him, outjump that guy.
01:13 And so he really just creates a massive matchup mismatch.
01:17 He's able to find the open holes in defenses, a great receiving tight end that should slot very, very well into OU's offense and should get the chance to play early with as physically talented as he is.
01:28 Again, OU's tight end room had some struggles this year.
01:31 Coming in, even though he will be young, I still think that he'll get the chance to earn some reps early in his career in the SEC.
01:38 And I think as he gets more ingrained with Jerry Schmidt, with that weight staff, he's going to become really exactly what an SEC tight end looks like, that prototypical 6'4", 250 pound guy that catches passes and just looks the part.
