00:00 Two nurses, Charlotte Wilmott, 48, and Catherine Hudson, 54, have been sentenced for drugging
00:07 patients at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in 2017 and 2018.
00:13 In this evidence that was put before the jury, Catherine Hudson talks of having, as she put
00:19 it, sedated all the troublemakers and sedating the one who can be a nightmare. In summary,
00:26 these offences of ill treatment were committed by these defendants whose duty was to protect
00:31 and care for them. The patients were as vulnerable as anyone could be. They couldn't leave the
00:38 stroke unit. Some of them found it difficult to make themselves understood. These defendants
00:44 exploited them for an easy shift, for amusement, to exercise a contemptuous power over them.
00:51 The son of one of the victims said his mother was left afraid of ever going back to a hospital
00:56 after surviving her ordeal.
00:58 Absolutely, I believe it is. It's pure evil in my mind. That wasn't just something that
01:04 they went, you know, there's a lot of planning that was going on in that. You could hear
01:09 that through these messages, the way they were speaking about the patients, they were
01:13 planning what they were going to do that night to those patients. And I think in terms of
01:18 just everything, as I say, it was evil. And my mum was never a problem to those nurses.
01:24 The nurses did nothing but speak highly of my mum. She had a really good bond with the
01:29 student nurse that whistleblowed, you know, the conversations. And I think for me as well,
01:34 for my mum being in hospital away from home, what could have been the outcome? My mum could
01:39 have passed away as a result of some of their actions. I don't know. Thankfully she hasn't,
01:44 but it is, it's evil. And the way they've spoken about other patients is absolutely disgusting.
01:51 Lancashire Police released this image of some of the messages the two nurses sent to each
01:55 other in which they appear to ridicule their victims. The pair were also convicted of offences
02:02 relating to stealing drugs from the hospital, along with three other members of staff. Both
02:08 nurses received prison sentences, with Hudson sentenced to seven years and two months and
02:14 Wilmot sentenced to three years.
