00:00 John Dan Campbell defended Ben Johnson suspect play calling in the second half of the week 14 contest with the Chicago Bears.
00:07 John, what do you make of that being the case from the Lions head coach defending Ben Johnson and his play calling?
00:13 Yeah, it was real interesting to hear Dan Campbell and what he thought about Ben Johnson's play calling.
00:19 I had asked after obviously the Lions failed to score in the second half, only scoring 13 points, not utilizing the weapons.
00:26 I felt in the best way possible, including Jamison Williams.
00:30 I just wondered how Dan Campbell felt about the play calling and he defended his offensive coordinator.
00:35 And you look at in the first half, the Lions were able to run the football.
00:39 They were able to be a little bit creative. But again, the struggles that occur offensively in the second half,
00:45 it really was eye opening to see the offense stagnate and not score a single point, especially coming out of the half.
00:52 You saw them attempt to take a deep shot to Jamison Williams, but unfortunately the ball was woefully short.
00:58 And you recognize that in the second half, you start off the third quarter with three three and outs,
01:04 and you then have multiple times where you try and go for it on fourth down unsuccessfully.
01:10 I felt like the play calls that they tried on fourth down were really unacceptable.
01:16 A run call that really had no chance to get executed.
01:20 So for me, I felt like the play calling might have been a little bit suspect.
01:25 Now, maybe was it many people felt it was maybe too conservative, having run the ball a little bit too often on first and second down.
01:33 I think that, you know, Ben Johnson was a little bit more creative than people will give him credit for.
01:37 But I just think the execution and some of the specific play calls were not up to par for Ben Johnson standard, nor Dan Campbell.
01:47 But Detroit's third year head coach is not going to throw his offensive coordinator under the bus.
01:51 But Vito, for the offense moving forward, the offense has to perform better, especially in the third quarter.
01:57 It's become a problem week after week.
02:00 And John, give Jamo more touches. Come on, man. John, thanks for all the time.
02:04 the time.
