Evaluating how the Detroit Lions fared in the recently released NFLPA report card.
Transcript
00:00 John, plain and simple, give me your evaluation of the NFLPA report card.
00:05 Yeah, real interesting.
00:07 Covering the Detroit Lions, you do see representatives of the NFLPA periodically in the Lions locker room.
00:13 And for the last couple years, they've done surveys, and luckily, the Lions have improved in several categories,
00:21 most notably in the weight room.
00:23 Last year, many players felt like the weight room and the nutrition wasn't up to par,
00:28 and improvements were made in several categories.
00:30 The Lions' grade went up, and for the most part, the grades were average and were improving.
00:37 A lot of Bs and As, and the Lions, I believe, ranked 13th overall in terms of their overall grade
00:43 based on the satisfaction of the players.
00:45 Dan Campbell, you knew, would be very highly rated, rated an A+,
00:51 and the third highest-rated NFL head coach.
00:55 Really, everybody believes that he listens to the players, will take into account what the players think in his decisions,
01:01 and it's no surprise Dan Campbell is a player-friendly head coach.
01:06 Now, the thing that's most interesting across the league, not just specific to the Lions,
01:12 many players across the league are not satisfied with the nutritional options that these clubs are giving.
01:18 The Lions, most notably, are wanting a lot more variety of nutrition,
01:23 and luckily, other organizations charge more.
01:26 They don't provide three meals a day.
01:28 The Detroit Lions do accommodate their players very well, but they just want more variety.
01:33 And I think the most surprising note that came out of the Lions' grades is the fact that many of the players
01:41 only graded Sheila Hemp as a B, B-, and they don't believe that maybe just as much as maybe they could,
01:49 they don't have faith that she's going to put an investment into more, into the weight room or other things going around the facility.
01:56 Only ranked in the 20s in regards to her overall ranking amongst NFL owners.
02:01 That's a little bit surprising, and I do think, though, even though the trend is in the right direction,
02:05 I thought Sheila Hemp's rating in regards to her level and willingness to invest, a little bit surprising from the players.
02:12 But overall, Vito, when you look at the NFLPA grades, the Lions improved in several areas.
02:18 And across the league, nutrition and certain amenities can always be improved.
02:24 And that's one way that the players have a voice is to state their case.
02:28 And from 2023, now you look at the Detroit Lions and their willingness to listen to the players and make changes.
02:36 They clearly did that. Now in 2024, they still got work to do.
02:40 Nutritionally, just feed me with Tim Hortons and I'm all set.
02:43 I'll just say that much, John. Thanks for all the time.
02:45 time.
