00:00 Rebster's Dictionary def- look, we don't need to do that, but if you don't know what
00:02 a kickout is, and why are you watching this and not Baby Shark for the 8th time today,
00:06 we talked about loads of things that make wrestling amazing to watch - table spots,
00:10 finishes, heel turns - but actually, maybe the single greatest thing to experience as
00:14 a wrestling fan is when you are completely 100% convinced that you are watching the finish
00:19 of a wrestling match, and then the wrestler being pinned kicks out. That jolt of sheer
00:23 electricity being unmatched in literally any other entertainment medium. The collective
00:27 bellow of surprise from a crowd when the shoulder leaves the mat is just the greatest thing,
00:32 and I'm trying to do the impossible here, so bear with me. Here are the 20 greatest
00:36 kickouts in wrestling history. And hey, remember to subscribe over on partsFUNknown, soon the
00:41 lists will move over there and we'll stop uploading to WrestleTalk so quick, subscribe
00:45 so you don't miss any. Honourable mentions, these two aren't technically kickouts but
00:48 they are heart-stopping false finishes in themselves. Neville hitting the red arrow
00:52 on Seth Rollins on Raw in 2015 only for his foot to kiss the middle rope, and Kenny Omega
00:56 finally hitting the one-winged angel on Okada in their first Dominion rematch, and Okada
01:01 just flicks his foot into the ropes at the last possible second. Amazing both. Right,
01:06 here we go, properly.
01:07 20. Edge - WrestleMania 24
01:09 Let's be honest, we knew Edge was going to kick out of the tombstone here because
01:12 of how long the delay was until the refs started counting, but goddammit this is going on the
01:16 list because of Charles Robinson's iconic dash to the ring. Look at them little legs
01:20 go diddly diddly diddly. Regular nature never moved like that. Proper funny that. As is
01:25 Robinson's big out-of-puff face when Edge finally kicks out.
01:28 19. Adam Cole - Ring of Honor Best in the World 2014
01:32 Hard to get hold of in terms of footage this but it's too funny to not include. At Ring
01:36 of Honor's Best in the World PPV in 2014, Mike Elgin finally won the ROH World Championship,
01:41 however before the actual finish of the match, Adam Cole kicked out of the Elgin Bomb at
01:45 the last possible moment, and the Ring of Honor fans were so convinced that was the
01:49 finish they prematurely threw streamers into the ring, which then had to be hurriedly cleared
01:54 away as the fans chanted "We f***ed up".
01:57 18. Mick Foley - Royal Rumble 2000
01:59 Ultimate warrior silliness aside, the pedigree was a super protected move going into 2000,
02:04 especially with Triple H enjoying his first ever world title reign, which made it all
02:07 the more joyous before Mick was then completely and utterly murdered in front of them with
02:11 another pedigree on the goddam thumbtacks. Oh no. It was a great moment that sold just
02:15 how more dangerous than mankind Cactus Jack could be.
02:18 17. AJ Style - SummerSlam 2016
02:22 Sometimes a great kick out reaction happens because WWE convinces us they're gonna do
02:25 a terrible thing, but then surprises us by doing a lovely thing. Case in point, at SummerSlam
02:30 2016, AJ Styles really needed to beat John Cena, but Cena going over was the most plausible
02:35 thing in the world, and Avalanche AA seems to be the Herald of Doom when AJ picks his
02:40 shoulder up at the last second. An incredible moment made very very silly by John Cena who
02:45 spends the next 20 minutes doing some I can't believe this acting. Look at that face. Stop
02:50 it.
02:51 18. CM Punk - Money in the Bank 2011
02:54 And hey, speaking of narrowly avoided plausible disaster, Punk vs Cena at Money in the Bank
02:58 is one of the great crowd matches of all time, an entire building aching for a Punk win,
03:04 with the horrible kernel of doubt in their stomachs that WWE would never crown him. The
03:08 first time Punk kicks out of the AA, it's expected, everyone kicks out of the first
03:12 AA on PPV after all, but the second, when Cena plants him one more time after walking
03:17 around with him on his shoulders, that was the one the crowd believed could truly, horribly
03:22 be the end, and the explosion of joy is so much louder.
03:26 15. Tyler Bate - NXT TakeOver Cardiff
03:29 A good kick out at one is, and should be, a rare commodity in wrestling main events,
03:34 but when done right, it's the most shocking thing in the world. At TakeOver Cardiff, during
03:38 Walter vs Tyler Bate, one of my favourite assist matches ever by the way, Walter plants
03:42 Bate with the same powerbomb he used to finish so many matches, plants all his weight on
03:47 Tyler who then kicks out at one. The moment's so shocking that fans don't immediately
03:52 react, but Bate and Walter hold their poses of grit and shock, and slowly the reaction
03:56 builds and builds to thunderousness. Big strong boy.
04:01 14. Daniel Bryan Elimination Chamber - 2012
04:04 As difficult as this is to type, but prior to this match, the Cobra was a protected finishing
04:09 move, god help us all. Seriously, if the sock went on and you got struck by it, you
04:13 were done for, and this protection paid off gangbusters in this unlikely world championship
04:17 moment in 2012. Going into the chamber match for Debray's title, Santino Marella had
04:21 a parody Rocky Balboa style underdog's journey, somehow made it to the final two of the match,
04:26 and good god almighty, actually hit the Cobra on Bryan. It did not make sense, it would
04:30 not make sense to change the title before Mania, it would never ever happen for Santino,
04:35 but just for that one moment, people believed, leading to a hell of a kick out, and seven
04:40 years later, Elimination Chamber 2019 underdog Kofi Kingston would kick out of Daniel Bryan's
04:45 running knee to a huge pop, bringing it all full circle.
04:48 13. The Rock WrestleMania X-7
04:51 I might get hate for this, but honestly, I think this kick out's a tad overrated. Like
04:55 it's good, course it is, the crowd response alone speaks to that, but the whole match
04:59 had been building and building to Austin finally hitting the stunner on The Rock. Instead of
05:04 kicking out at two and a half, Rock powers out at two. It's a small difference, but
05:08 it's all the difference. Big moment, big match, and the storytelling's great. The
05:12 kick out breaks Austin's mind, and that leads to him unloading with the chair, but
05:15 it could have been just slightly better, and you know I'm right.
05:18 12. Kenny Omega Wrestle Kingdom XI
05:21 The moment that you knew that Kenny Omega would someday be IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
05:26 The first ever singles match between Omega and Okada took place at Wrestle Kingdom XI.
05:30 It ran over 45 minutes, making it the longest Wrestle Kingdom match ever, and a finisher
05:34 is only kicked out of once. After a blistering exchange, a dead on his feet Kenny is hit
05:39 with the Rainmaker and kicks out at the last possible moment. It's a huge deal, and a
05:44 lot of credit has to be given to Okada for his face afterwards. Instead of the bug eyed
05:48 "huh?" face that so many wrestlers do, Okada just looks really, really sad. Like,
05:54 oh no. Brilliant.
05:56 11. Savage and Warrior WrestleMania 7
05:59 An absolute classic, the retirement match between Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior
06:03 isn't talked about nearly enough as it should be. The crowd are mental for this match
06:07 throughout thanks to a whipsmart and unexpected match layout that sees not one, but two insane
06:12 kick outs. First, Savage hits Warrior with not one, not two, but five elbow drops, and
06:17 that doesn't put him away. But then Warrior hits the running splash, the move that won
06:20 him the WWF title the year before, and this time Savage powers out. Very silly stuff,
06:26 but considering that both men's careers were on the line, the kick outs match the
06:29 stakes.
06:30 10. Randy Orton WrestleMania 30
06:33 Fans really are so conditioned to WWE telling them to go f*ck themselves that so many people,
06:38 myself included, truly bought this as the finish to the triple threat main event of
06:41 WrestleMania 30. Daniel Bryan hits Orton with the running knee, before Batista scoops him
06:45 out of the ring and steals the cover with just a biggish sh*t eating grin on his face.
06:50 Batista was originally booked to win that match after all, and fans had this sudden
06:53 flash of plausible, really plausible horror for Orton, mercifully kicked out.
06:59 9. Brock Lesnar WrestleMania 31
07:01 It's something I've mentioned a whole bunch of times, but Lesnar really is one of the
07:04 best kick out artists in the business, which is saying something for a man made of 16 tons
07:08 of furious tofu. His timing is so good, and he always remembers not to physically start
07:13 moving until the last possible moment, which is more than could be said for John Cena.
07:17 This kick out is the perfect storm of superb last second timing and a really plausible
07:22 finish that no one wanted. Roman Hey was at his all time height, he just hit two spears,
07:28 oh god this is it isn't it, and oh god it's not. Proper depart your chair stuff.
07:34 8. Shawn Michaels WrestleMania 21
07:37 Kurt Angle is another all time great kick out, barely moving most of the time, just
07:41 sort of flinging an arm in the air, but in one of the greatest matches in Mania history,
07:45 HBK does it better. Michaels is on the top rope, Angle scampers up to him and plants
07:50 him with a top rope angle slam, dies for the cover but Michaels launches a shoulder up
07:53 at two and a half, and man just the roar of the crowd. It's an insane pop for an insanely
07:59 great match. And speaking of insane pops,
08:02 7. Hulk Hogan WrestleMania 18
08:05 Hot damn Canada, you loud. The Icon vs Icon match between Rock and Hogan is super basic,
08:10 but that's what works about it, and the crowd went insane for it. It's generally
08:14 one of the loudest, most sustained pops ever, when Hogan kicks out of the rock bottom, straight
08:19 into a Hulk up. He nails Rock with the big boot and the leg drop, JR delivers one of
08:23 the all time great calls with He Beat Andre the Giant with that move, and then the crowd
08:28 pop like crazy again when Rock kicks out of that. Just a huge amount of noise.
08:32 6. Kota Ibushi G1 Climax 23
08:36 One of the best kick outs ever, maybe one you've never even heard of, but it's so
08:40 good. Kota Ibushi is the current top guy in New Japan, but it was a long road getting
08:44 there. Even so, Ibushi had greatness deep within him, alongside a streak of sheer terrifying
08:49 violence. In this blockbuster G1 match with the very best version of Shinsuke Nakamura,
08:54 they knock lumps off each other, with Ibushi going to his very dark, very violent place.
08:58 Nakazin hits him with three Bombayes, that's what they call the Kinshasa in New Japan,
09:02 three of the f*ckers, and Ibushi kicks out at one. What makes it so great though is that
09:07 it's not a proper kick out, like he leaps out of it before his legs buckle, he's
09:12 locked on his feet, he has no idea where he is. The kick out came from this unthinking,
09:16 bestial part of Kota Ibushi before one more Bombaye puts him away, but what a shocking
09:21 glimpse of the insane greatness yet to come.
09:25 5. Johnny Gargano – Takeover New York Silly match this, and a prelude to some of
09:30 NXT's more cartoonish false finish over indulgences, but dammit the final few minutes
09:34 of this match tear you around like a dog with a rabbit in its mouth. Cole was so much the
09:38 obvious choice to win this match that the fans bore every single false finish. When
09:42 Johnny kicks out of Panama Sunrise, out of Yui hitting him with the high low, and finally
09:46 what surely HAD to be the finish when Gargano takes out the whole faction before eating
09:51 two superkicks and a last shot, no kick out. Very, very silly, especially in hindsight,
09:56 but heart stopping stuff in the moment.
09:59 4. Kenny Omega – AEW Revolution 2020 The best kick out at one, ever, ever. Told a
10:06 wonderful story this, one that we've talked about a lot, but that's how great it really
10:09 is. The Elite have been on shaky ground for a while, stretching back years into New Japan
10:14 with The Young Bucks being obviously jealous of Omega's friendship with his best boyfriend
10:17 for life and Golden Lover's teammate Kota Ibushi. At Revolution, Young Bucks let their
10:22 inner heels out and hit Omega with the Golden Trigger, which is the Lover's finishing
10:26 move. This cruel dig lit a fire of pure rage under Kenny, and he powered out at one before
10:32 pounding the mat in fury all as the fans lost their shit.
10:36 3. Brock Lesnar – Survivor Series 2018 My favourite match, and my favourite moment
10:42 from my favourite match. Daniel Bryan suffers the beating of his life before glimpsing one
10:46 tiny opportunity to turn things around. The ref goes down, kick to the balls, and then
10:50 the running knee, with Lesnar shifting himself away from the ropes which sells as a false
10:54 finish even more before a kick out with nanoseconds to spare. Glorious stuff.
10:59 2. Shawn Michaels – WrestleMania 25 I just had an out of body experience. Well
11:05 said JR. It's important to point out that prior to WrestleMania 25, The Undertaker's
11:09 streak was usually defended with a single tombstone. Sure, the year before they had
11:13 the Charles Robinson silliness, but more or less since Mania 14, the Deadman only needed
11:18 to hit one. Ten years later, one was not enough to fell Shawn Michaels, and gruesome Susan's
11:23 face tells the whole story. Perfect mix of timing, place in the match, reactions from
11:27 wrestlers and announcers alike. It's almost the best of the best.
11:31 1. The Undertaker – WrestleMania 28 Because, yeah. This is a time that pretty
11:37 much everyone actually let themselves believe, just for 10 seconds, that the streak was coming
11:42 to an end. The match itself is a bit long, a bit too amdram for some people's tastes,
11:46 but this moment might just be the best WrestleMania moment ever. Sweetsian music, pedigree, kick
11:52 out. Unreal just how much this 10 second window makes you feel. As Taker kicks out, JR screams,
11:57 'The streak lives!' and Michaels contorts like he's being attacked by a cloud of
12:01 invisible bees. Hooray for wrestling.
