00:00 "As long as you believe in the faith, your prayers will be answered."
00:06 That is what the devotees of Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba in Pakil Laguna believe.
00:14 They also believe that there is a pool there that can be used for bathing.
00:19 And that the water there is good for various feelings.
00:23 How true is this? That is what our team member, Darlene Cai, found out.
00:27 [Music]
00:35 On December 1, Friday, the devotees of Pakil Laguna
00:42 will be celebrating the Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba.
00:48 They are the caretakers of the pool of the Virgin of Turumba.
00:53 On this day, they will be wearing a new attire.
00:58 Now, we are sewing the cape of the Virgin of Turumba.
01:03 So, it's like finishing touches.
01:05 Yes, it's like finishing touches.
01:07 1986 years old is the age of the caretakers of the Virgin of Turumba.
01:14 The clothing and arranging of the pool is now part of her faith.
01:19 How long have you been a caretaker?
01:22 About 27 years, since the death of our Lord.
01:28 Why do you put perfume?
01:31 There are many people who smell it.
01:33 Even the people who are far away smell it.
01:35 That's why it's good to smell.

01:51 On December 3, the Marian devotees held the Intramuros in Manila.
01:58 The people of this Marian procession are the followers of the Virgin Mary
02:04 from different parts of the Philippines.
02:07 [Chanting]
02:13 The followers of Mama Mary in the country joined this procession.
02:18 Including the Our Lady of Turumba from the town of Taquil in Laguna.
02:23 Almost all of the people who were brought here were in a carriage.
02:29 But the Virgin of Turumba was in a procession that was carried by the devotees one by one.
02:37 The sacrifice of the devotees and their children is part of our faith.
02:43 This great devotion to Our Lady of Turumba became the reason
02:49 why some of our fellow Filipinos prayed for a miracle.
02:54 Dear Mother, don't make me weak inside.
02:58 Help me overcome this sickness.
03:02 I hope I can overcome it.
03:05 I am still thankful to you because my faith in Him has been strengthened.

03:21 We met Maricel here in Laguna, her mother and her house.
03:26 She is a devoted devotee of Our Lady of Turumba.
03:29 She first met Our Lady of Turumba in 2002.
03:33 And until now, she goes to Taquil to attend worship services.
03:38 I came from Quezon. I went to Calamba, Laguna.
03:42 That's where I will be attending high school.
03:44 That's where I heard about Our Lady of Turumba.
03:46 My friends and I go to worship services whenever there's a festival of Our Lady of Turumba.
03:50 For me, I was just a child when I was brought here.
03:54 I cried because when there's a festival of Our Lady of Turumba,
03:59 it's given to us.
04:02 At that time, I cried.
04:08 I was so sad.
04:09 As long as my faith in Him is being fulfilled, I am praying for it to be fulfilled.
04:14 In August, Maricel's faith was tested.
04:19 Her son, Onin, was admitted to the hospital after he had an accident on the road.
04:26 He was hit by a truck while riding a motorcycle along the National Highway in Siniluan.
04:34 Because the bruise on his body was severe, Maricel said that her son could be saved.
04:42 I will tell you the truth. I felt it.
04:44 I cried.
04:51 I called Fr. Pio, Mama Mary of Turumba, and Sister Onin of Dicibo.
04:59 I also called the people in Reno.
05:03 I called them and asked them to bring my son back.
05:05 How far will Maricel's prayer reach?
05:11 Will she hear the prayer of Himalaya?
05:19 Because the number of devotees of Our Lady of Turumba is increasing,
05:25 the Church Of Christ of Latter-day Saints is giving the first Friday of the month as a special day.
05:31 The worshipers go to the Church of Christ of Latter-day Saints on the first Friday of the month at 6.30 in the morning.
05:37 Before the Mass is over, they gather to be blessed with healing oil.
05:47 One of the few who attended the Mass was 59-year-old Fr. Willie.
05:53 He has been serving in the Church for a long time and actively joined the processions whenever the feast of Our Lady of Turumba was held.
06:03 Fr. Willie's victory grew even more because of the suffering he went through.
06:10 He was attacked by a mild stroke in 2021.
06:14 Good morning, Father.
06:17 How are you?
06:19 I'm fine. I'm Willie Tobias.
06:21 I was struck by a stroke on June 3, 2021 on the road of a vehicle.
06:26 I was in the hospital for a month.
06:28 A therapist, a staff of the hospital, held me.
06:33 I couldn't walk and I couldn't go to the CR.
06:36 What were you thinking when you couldn't move?
06:40 I'm not rich.
06:42 I don't have money.
06:44 I went to the person who is dear to me.
06:47 What is your prayer that you can share with us?
06:50 Mother, don't make me weak inside.
06:53 Help me overcome this illness.
06:58 I hope I can overcome it.
07:01 You are the only one I can rely on.
07:03 Fr. Willie continued to recover after his left side of his body was paralyzed.
07:10 He was able to recover from the stroke.
07:15 One of the things that helped him recover was taking a bath in this miraculous swimming pool
07:21 that is located just behind the church.
07:24 Father Willie, what do you feel when you take a bath here?
07:29 I feel a lot of things when I take a bath.
07:33 The bathroom is deep.
07:36 I feel like I'm drowning.
07:39 The cold water in the pool comes from a clean pool.
07:44 Usually, devotees go straight here after attending the worship service.
07:48 It is believed that taking a bath and drinking water here can heal the feelings.
07:55 According to a local story, sometimes the apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared in front of this pool.
08:05 Because of stories like this, the faith of the devotees became stronger
08:11 in overcoming the apparition of the Virgin of Turumpa.
08:15 Fr. Jerry, good morning.
08:20 Good morning, darling.
08:21 Good morning.
08:22 Nice to meet you.
08:24 It is important to receive the blessing of St. Pedro of Alcantara in the town of Pacquim.
08:33 The history of this church is deep in its design and architecture.
08:38 It was built in 1588 as a chapel.
08:42 It was the time of the conquest of the Spaniards and the time when the town of Paete was also under the control.
08:48 In 1676, it was turned into a parish church,
08:53 at the same time as the establishment of the town of Pacquim.
08:56 This church of Pacquim is 347 years old and it is one of the oldest churches in Laguna.
09:05 This church of Pacquim was saved from the bombing of the Japanese.
09:10 That is why it is one of the treasures of our province, of our town of Pacquim.
09:18 Usually, crucifixes can be found in the altars of Catholic churches.
09:23 But in the parish of Pacquim, the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba is placed in the middle.
09:30 The carved wall of the church is adorned with a painted mural.
09:35 It is not just a painting because the statue of Our Lady of Turumba tells the story of this statue.
09:43 The devotional service of the members of the Church Of God of Turumba began on September 1, 1788.
09:49 It was the time when a statue or painting of the Virgin Mary was found in the Pampang of Laguna de Bay.
09:56 The painting was the statue of the Virgin of Hapis or Our Lady of Sorrows.
10:01 It is one of the titles given to the Virgin Mary by the Catholic Church.
10:06 From the image of the Virgin Mary crying,
10:09 it symbolizes the hardships that the Virgin Mary went through as the Mother of Jesus Christ.
10:15 We are here in a village in Barangay Burgos in the town of Pacquim in Laguna.
10:19 And here in this part of the valley,
10:21 it is said that the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba was found in the middle of the valley in 1788.
10:28 Here in this valley, at that time, we need to imagine that this valley is a source of transportation, of livelihood.
10:36 And the missionaries also pass through here to reach their churches and later on, to serve.
10:44 So, it happened that a missionary was riding a horse.
10:48 Let us imagine that the valley of Laguna was full of animals, full of dangers, the weather was always bad.
10:55 So, it happened that a missionary brought an image of the dear Virgin of Hapis painted in a piece of iron and surrounded by a wooden frame.
11:03 There were a few days when fishermen could see the whole valley covered with mud.
11:12 What people there were wondering was that the painting of the dear Virgin was not destroyed by water.
11:19 Because of this remarkable discovery, it was considered a miracle by the fishermen.
11:26 They called it "Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de Turumba" or "Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba."
11:34 It was a very different emotion, a very different joy that people felt when they were shouting, clapping, and dancing.
11:42 And the image was presented to the church.
11:46 Now, the work that was said to be found in a chapel inside the church is preserved and is taken care of by the parishioners as a treasure.
11:57 So, when you say Father, original, it means that all of those parts were not replaced.
12:05 It remains untouched. Its metal is as is, its wood is as is.
12:11 Even the material used for carving has not changed.
12:16 Despite the countless stories of the Himalayan being dedicated to the Virgin of Turumba,
12:26 Maricel seemed to have lost her faith because of what happened to her child.
12:32 Don't make her suffer for too long. Don't make her suffer if she is still with us.
12:39 But if you really don't want her and you will take her, give me a sign why and what mistakes we have done as a couple.
12:48 I really said, "You have left me."
12:53 After about four days, she was still in the ICU.
12:59 She was bleeding from her nose.
13:03 At that time, on the second floor of the hospital, I was like nobody was seeing me.
13:08 It was just dark, but I was looking for the laboratory.
13:12 Then, I saw my foot on the front of the chapel.
13:15 I called Father Pio and Mother Maricel of Turumba.
13:20 They were the ones I called and asked them to bring my child back.
13:23 After a few weeks, Onin was discharged from the hospital.
13:28 At present, Onin is recovering at home and her memory is back after a temporary memory loss.
13:36 I only remember that I woke up in the hospital.
13:41 After a few days, I was operated here.
13:45 Even though we haven't been able to go out, I still remember that
13:48 I didn't believe that all I asked for was a blessing.
13:52 Even though I went through this trial, I am still thankful to you because my faith has grown.
13:58 I am thankful to God.
14:00 I really didn't know.
14:04 I am so thankful to my mother and father.
14:09 They are the ones who pray for me.
14:12 It has been a few days since Christmas,
14:16 and the stories of this Christmas are reminding us
14:21 that aside from joy, gifts, and preparation,
14:26 faith and doing good to others is the true essence of this time.
